Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is an extremely rare condition of premature aging. It is characterized by growth retardation and accelerated degenerative changes of cutaneous, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems. The pathogenesis of the disease is unknown. The patients usually appear normal at birth. Typical manifestations develop gradually and are evident by the first or second year of life. They have a remarkably similar physical appearance consisting of short stature, alopecia, craniofacial disproportion, micrognathia, hypoplastic mandible, beak-like nose, decreased subcutaneous…

INTRODUCTION: Two cases of hypoplastic left heart syndrome diagnosed in the early neo-natal period are presented in this research. This syndrome is the most frequent cause of cardiac death in the infantile period. Its etiology is unknown. There are a few theories trying to explain the cause of the syndrome's occurrence, however, neither one of them has been confirmed with certainty. The hypoplastic left heart syndrome (LHHS) which is a complex congenital heart defect will take an advanced course followed by a bad prognosis unless treated surgically in time, i.e. within the first days of life a…

Very little documentation of the neuropathologic changes in Joubert syndrome exists. This paper presents a detailed postmortem neuropathologic study of a clinically and radiographically well-documented case of Joubert syndrome. In addition to aplasia of the cerebellar vermis and fragmentation of the dentate nuclei, there was marked dysplasia of structures at the pontomesencephalic junction and caudal medulla. There was abnormal decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles and an enlarged iter (rostral 4th ventricle) with elongated tegmental nuclei (including the locus coeruleus). Neurons o…

BACKGROUND: Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomic recessive metabolic affection. Children affected by SLOS exhibit a defect in cholesterol biosynthesis associated with a high concentration of cholesterol precursor 7 dehydrocholesterol (7 DHC) and its isomers, which is due to an enzymatic block at the level of delta-7-DHC reductase. SLOS has been subdivided into two types on the basis of clinical severity: type I is the classic and type II is the severe one.
CASE REPORT: A full term female was born from a pregnancy complicated by oligoamniosis and intra-uterine growth retardation. …

Chronic carpal tunnel syndrome was initially described by James Jackson Putnam in 1880. A number of medical luminaries have also contributed to our understanding of the syndrome, including Paget, Marie, Ramsay Hunt, Phalen. and Osler. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common peripheral compression neuropathy. Most cases are idiopathic, with nonspecific tenosynovitis leading to median nerve compression. A number of diseases and other conditions are also associated with chronic carpal tunnel. Patients characteristically complain of nocturnal paresthesias or burning pain. Motor complaints relate…

We report the perinatal presentation and evolution of Netherton's syndrome in siblings. The first patient, a female infant, presented with asphyxia at birth due to aspiration of desquamated scale, non-bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma, and hypernatraemic dehydration which she had for several days. Subsequently, she failed to thrive, with recurrent bacterial infections until 5 months of age, and very high serum IgE levels (1200 U/mL). Trichorrhexis invaginata and pili torti were identified at 18 months. The second patient was the younger brother of the first. Hydramnios and hyperechoic materia…

True neurogenic radial tunnel syndrome is an uncommon condition caused by entrapment of the radial or posterior interosseous nerve in the radial tunnel and is usually easily identifiable by focal motor weakness in the distribution of the posterior interosseous nerve. Roles and Maudsley, analogizing to carpal tunnel syndrome, believed "radial tunnel syndrome" had a different presentation: proximal forearm pain and tenderness in the region of the supinator muscle. However, their patients lacked weakness or other neurologic deficit. They and subsequent surgeons have decompressed the radial nerve …

Thyroid dysfunction frequently (around 5%) occurs after delivery through immune rebound mechanism. More than half of the patients suffer from postpartum thyroiditis. Initially, patients have a thyrotoxic phase, later passing through euthyroidism to hypothyroidism and, finally, return to euthyroidism. After delivery, other forms of autoimmune thyroid dysfunction also occur, including Graves' disease, transient hypothyroidism without preceding destructive thyrotoxicosis, and persistent hypothyroidism. To include all these conditions, the term postpartum autoimmune thyroid syndrome is often used.…

Swyer-James-MacLeod syndrome is a rare complication of respiratory tract infection occurring in early childhood. We report two children with chronic cough and recurrent wheezing who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for this disorder: 1) Unilateral loss of lung volume with hyperlucency on chest x-ray. 2) Unilateral reduction in vascularity on CT scan of the chest. 3) Unilateral loss of perfusion on Technetium 99c lung scan.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the frequency of fibromyalgia (FM) in Behçet's syndrome (BS) and to evaluate the relationship of FM to Behçet's disease activity.
METHOD: Self-questionnaires were completed by 108 patients with BS. Each patient was evaluated by an observer blinded to diagnosis; evaluation included assessment of tender points by palpation. Another observer determined the disease activity of patients at that time.
RESULTS: Ten of 108 patients (9.2%) met the American College of Rheumatology criteria for FM. Nine of the patients who met the criteria for FM were women. In contrast to patie…

We have studied a battery of movements in 5 children (age, 6-15 years) after transection of the posterior inferior cerebellar vermis. In each case, the surgery destroyed the midline vermis only (ranging from lobules VI-X). Tandem gait was badly impaired in all subjects. No subjects had impairments of kicking, reaching, pinching, or speech. Regular gait, standing, and hopping on one leg were relatively unimpaired. Cutting the parallel fibers that cross the midline may be the critical variable causing incoordination in tandem gait.

BACKGROUND: Classic popliteal artery entrapment is caused by the abnormal relationship between the popliteal artery and the medial head of the gastrocnemius, resulting in repetitive arterial compression and trauma. There is, however, a distinct subset of calf claudicants who have an anatomically normal popliteal fossa but can occlude the popliteal artery by repetitive vigorous exercise which involves active plantar flexion with or without extension at the knee joint.
METHODS: Eight patients who led a vigorous athletic lifestyle were evaluated with duplex scan and biplane angiogram after being
