Meningitis is an unusual presentation of rickettsial infection. We report a patient who was confirmed by serology to have typhus fever (not scrub), but who presented with the typical findings of culture-negative bacterial meningitis. Neurological manifestations of different types of rickettsial infection are discussed.

Minocycline-induced cutaneous and nail bed discoloration, although uncommon, should be closely watched for during treatment. The initial changes may be subtle and may mimic other processes that may deceive both patient and physician. Patients should be counseled about the remote possibility of pigmentation with the understanding that any such changes should resolve upon discontinuation of the drug. The time required for resolution depends upon the degree of pigmentation and may take longer than a year in extensive cases.

We describe six cases of keratoconjunctivitis due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae in adults. All strains tested were penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae (PPNG), and we conclude that the rising incidence of corneal involvement, a classic complication in the pre-antibiotic era, is due to ineffective treatment with penicillin. Indeed, the progression of the ocular lesions was stopped and microbiologic cure was obtained in all our patients after treatment with either spectinomycin or cefotaxime. 13-cis-retinoic acid was given with good results to 7 patients with exceptionally severe rosacea. Side effects were transitory and of minor consequence and subsided quickly on reduction of the dosage and topical application of mild cosmetics. The long-lasting remissions recorded to date indicate that 13-cis-retinoic acid may prove a new and successful approach to the treatment of rosacea.

The influence of immobilisation on the number and function of osteoblasts was determined by morphological examination of normal rabbit bone and that that had been inactivated through surgery.
