Prevalence of Hepatic Steatosis and Fibrosis in the United States.

Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the world. We evaluated vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) data to determine the prevalence of two principle manifestations of NAFLD, hepatic steatosis and hepatic fibrosis. Methods: Data were sourced from the 2017 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which provides a representative cross-section of the noninstitutionalized U.S. population. Participants 18 years of age and older were examined using sera and VCTE. Sociodemographic and medical history information were g

Arterial stiffness in underweight and weight-restored anorexia nervosa.

Cardiovascular complications have been demonstrated in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) in both the state of starvation and during weight restoration, however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The current study aimed to assess arterial stiffness via carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) in the acute and weight-restored states of AN. The study also aimed to determine the association between psychological distress and cfPWV. The sample included 37 participants; 10 participants with AN, 17 who were weight-restored (AN-WR; minimum body mass index >18.5 for at least 12 months) and

The association between household socio-economic status, maternal socio-demographic characteristics and adverse birth and infant growth outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

Adverse birth outcomes and infant undernutrition remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Impaired infant growth and development, which often begins during foetal development, may persist during the first 2 years of life and has been associated with higher risks of cardiometabolic diseases. This systematic review assessed the associations between maternal demographic characteristics and household socio-economic status (SES), and preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age, low birth weight (LBW), stunting, wasting and underweight in children under 2

Chromatographic Study of Azintamide in Bulk Powder and in Pharmaceutical Formulation in the Presence of Its Degradation Form.

Two specific, sensitive, and precise stability-indicating chromatographic methods were developed, optimized, and validated for the determination of Azintamide (AZ) in the presence of its degradation product. The first method was TLC combined with the densitometric determination of the separated bands. Separation was achieved using silica gel 60 F254 TLC plates and chloroform-acetone-glacial acetic acid (7.5 + 2.1 + 0.4, v/v/v) as the developing system. Good correlations were obtained between the integrated peak area of the studied drug and its corresponding concentrations in the linearity rang

Eating disorders and the media.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In June 2015, the newspapers in England once again pointed at the media industry as responsible for the spread of eating disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: This article reviews this argument and previous research on the role of the media industry in the perpetration of images that may foster eating disorders. SUMMARY: It has been recently argued, coherently with previous research, that the media may be responsible for the spread of eating disorders. This article reviews this literature, and evaluates what the real role of the media in the spread of eating disorders is. The articl

Ghrelin response to hedonic eating in underweight and short-term weight restored patients with anorexia nervosa.

Recently, anorexia nervosa (AN) has been conceptualized as a reward-related disorder, and alterations in brain reward processes have been documented in both acute and recovered AN patients. However, the role of endogenous biochemical mediators, such as ghrelin, in the modulation of reward processes has been poorly investigated in this eating disorder. Hedonic eating, that is the consumption of food exclusively for pleasure and not to maintain energy homeostasis, is a useful paradigm to investigate the physiology of food-related reward. Therefore, we assessed the response of peripheral ghrelin

Underweight, overweight, and pediatric bone fragility: impact and management.

Skeletal health is modulated by a variety of factors, including genetic makeup, hormonal axes, and environment. Across all ages, extremes of body weight may exert a deleterious effect on bone accretion and increase fracture risk. The incidence of both anorexia nervosa and obesity, each involving extreme alterations in body composition, is rising among youth, and secondary osteoporosis is increasingly being diagnosed among affected children and adolescents. Compared with the elderly, the definition of osteoporosis that stems from any underlying condition differs for the pediatric population and
