A 55-year-old man with a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura on the left side underwent resection, but 2 recurrent tumors were found 3 years later. The recurrent tumors were reported to have undergone malignant transformation. Recurrent solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with malignant progression is rare. Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura often has an indolent clinical course, and may be asymptomatic for several years, so postoperative surveillance may necessitate long-term follow-up because of the potentially malignant transformative biological behavior of this type of tumor.

We report the case of a 31-year old woman with recurrence of left diaphragmatic eventration 3 years after a previous surgery for this condition. At the initial occurrence, she had experienced dyspnoea on exercise and subsequently underwent laparoscopic plication of the diaphragm with an endo-stapler at a local hospital. The thoracoscopic and traditional thoracotomic surgical access for bronchiectesis treatment in children were compared. The first (thoracoscopic) group included 18 children. OBJECTIVE: In 1993, A. Campel published the VEPTR (vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib) instrumentation for the treatment of thoracic insufficiency syndrome (TIS). The goal of surgery is to lengthen and expand the constricted concave hemithorax to the height of the convex sides to increase thoracic volume, to obtain thoracic symmetry, to improve thoracic function, to maintain these improvement during growth of the child, and to avoid growth inhibition procedures, if possible.

We report a case of localized bronchiectasis mimicking a hemangioma demonstrated on enhanced chest computed tomography. A 52-year-old female with recent onset dysphagia and haematemesis was found to have an intramural tumour of the oesophagus. A separate tumour in the posterior mediastinum was also detected. Both the tumours were immunohistochemically and histomorphologically compatible with benign schwannoma. Oesophageal schwannoma is extremely rare and its association with a concurrent schwannoma in posterior mediastinum is not reported earlier in the literature.

OBJECTIVES: Sternal instability after cardiac surgery occurs infrequently but can be challenging to manage. The most common treatment of mechanical sternal instability is operative rewiring. Transverse rib-to-rib stabilization with titanium plates designed for sternal fixation is a recent option. We evaluated the clinical utility of the transverse plating system in a cardiothoracic practice.

Congenital defects of the pericardium are rare, but when they are reported they are frequently associated with other cardiac lesions. We describe a case of partial pericardial defect found incidentally at surgery for closure of an ostium primum atrial septal defect. Proposed mechanisms of pericardial defect development are discussed and we suggest that associations with congenital and acquired heart disease are mostly circumstantial.
