[Progress of ocular motor and structures in multiple sclerosis patients].

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of central nervous system, which often affects ocular region and causes structural and functional changes of eyes. Therefore, there have been plenty of researches on the alteration of motor and structures of eyes by MS. This paper reviews and summarizes the progress of MS-related changes of ocular motor, cornea, structure and blood flow of retina, and optic nerve, and may provide a new insight for related clinical researches. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2020, 56: 711-715).

Myopic optic disc changes and its role in glaucoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optic nerve head (ONH) changes such as tilt and torsion are associated with the progression of myopia, and may in turn predispose toward glaucoma. At the same time, these ONH deformations also make the structural assessment for glaucoma difficult. Here, we review the mechanisms and changes to the myopic optic disc, and the advances in structural imaging to better evaluate the ONH in myopia. RECENT FINDINGS: The distance, depth, and angle between the optic disc and the deepest point of the elongated eyeball may be related to the degree and direction of optic disc tilt and to

[Case report on OCT findings in a patient with hereditary optic neuropathy and a patient with autosomal dominant optic atrophy].

BACKGROUND: Hereditary optic neuropathies lead to a decrease in visual acuity corresponding to a reduction of the ganglion cell layer and the nerve fibre layer. The most common neuropathies, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA), are mitochondrial disorders. CASE REPORT: We describe two cases, one with LHON and one with ADOA, and demonstrate the decrease in thickness of the ganglion cell layer using spectral domain OCT (optical coherence tomography). RESULTS: In the case with LHON, the ganglion cell layer and the nerve fibre layer showed a consi

Ultra-high resolution OCT imaging reveals retinal layer degeneration in RD10 mice with comparison to commercial standard resolution OCT.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging gives researchers a window into the structure-function relationships of the retina. This makes OCT a great tool for studying photoreceptor degeneration in vivo in mouse models of inherited retinal diseases like retinitis pigmentosa (RP). RP is a leading cause of blindness in individuals under 40 and has no approved treatment. In this study, we present a custom ultra-high resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography (UHR-OCT) system for imaging the mouse retina with an axial resolution of 2.38 µm in air. First, we qualitatively and quantitat

Macular telangiectasia type 2: An update.

Macular telangiectasia type 2 is a genetically complex disorder with variable penetrance and expressivity. Although several causative genes have been identified, the genetic basis remains unknown in most affected individuals. Genetic and metabolomic studies have implicated dysregulated serine and lipid metabolism in disease pathogenesis. Serine deficiency promotes the accumulation of cytotoxic 1-deoxysphingolipids, which damage Müller cells, photoreceptors, and retinal pigment epithelium. Emerging evidence suggests that the retinal pigment epithelium plays a more important role in disease deve
