The influence of phenoxybenzamine on micturition was examined in 46 patients with functional bladder neck obstruction. Due to blockade of the alpha-adrenergic receptors at the bladder neck an increase of the maximal flow rate from a mean value of 13.6 to 24.6 ml s-1 was found during the treatment. In a preliminary study of 32 women with stress urinary incontinence, a modification was added to the standard suprapubic urethropexy to decrease the incidence of postoperative urinary retention. Immediately before the elevating sutures are tied, a urethroscope is inserted into the midurethra and the bladder neck is visualized while the sutures are being tied with just enough tension to close the bladder neck. Standardising guidelines in urethrometry have been set up at the Department of Gynaecology of the Frauenfeld "Kantonsspital" hospital in collaboration with the Swiss working team for urodynamics. The article gives a detailed description of measurement technique, examination procedure and evaluation of curves. The standard values for continence, stress incontinence I and stress incontinence II/III are calculated. Finally, the article deals with the clinical interpretation of the urethral pressure profile.

Erotic stimulation by the use of vacuum cleaners or electric brooms appears to be a common form of masturbation. Unfortunately, and contrary to apparent public appreciation, injury due to this form of autostimulation may not be unusual. Five cases of significant penile trauma resulting from this form of masturbation are presented, with a spectrum of severe injuries, including loss of the glans penis.

A technique of two-stage repair of severe proximal hypospadias associated with bifid scrotum is described. The first repair consists of concurrent chordectomy and scrotoplasty with urethral mobilization. The second and final repair is urethroplasty from the anteriorly mobilized meatus to the tip of the glans with glansplasty and meatoplasty. The advantage of this modification is discussed by comparing it with techniques described before.

A newborn having a covered anus and two fistulas, one ano-urethral and one penile urethro-cutaneous, is presented. In spite of the resemblance of this ano-urethral fistula to an "H-type" ano-urethral fistula, which is thought to result from the failure of the division of the cloaca in the embryological period, three abnormalities seen in this case were thought to be the result of a serial event which occurred in the more distal part, the anal and the genital folds, during the embryological period.

The authors examine the role of the urodynamic test on patients suffering from stress incontinence. Rupture of the neonatal urinary bladder during pregnancy or delivery is an extremely rare event, in some patients secondary to posterior urethral valves. In a recent case early diagnosis facilitated prompt surgical repair. A temporary bladder fistula secured survival and micturition cystourethrography establishment of the valves, which were successfully resected at two weeks of age.

Urethral discharge from men was diluted to give heavy and light inocula and cultured on seven different solid culture media, including two transport/isolation media, or held in three types of semi-solid transport medium for varying periods and then cultured.
