The Embedded Influence of Systemic Racism on Interpersonal Violence, Alcohol and Substance Misuse, and Reproductive Health Among American Indian and Alaska Native Communities: Great Plains Metropolitan Area, 2018-2024.

Objectives. To use syndemic theory and system dynamics to describe how systemic racism shapes interrelationships among interpersonal violence, alcohol and substance misuse, and reproductive health among American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Methods. We conducted a community-based system dynamics study in a Great Plains metropolitan area. Using purposive and key informant sampling, we interviewed 110 participants (2018-2024) to develop causal loop diagrams. We aggregated 19 diagrams into a synthesized model, refined it through 5 additional group sessions (n = 28), and applied rigorousl…

COVID-19 and the Syndemic of Intimate Partner Violence, Mental Health, Substance Use, and HIV Care Engagement Among Black Sexual Minority Men Living with HIV in the US South.

BACKGROUND: Black sexual minority men (BSMM) are disproportionately affected by HIV incidence and have lower rates of HIV care engagement (e.g., retention in care, viral suppression), particularly in the US South. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated co-occurring psychosocial syndemic factors (e.g., depression, violence, substance use) that disproportionately impact BSMM living with HIV (BSMM+), but the impact of the pandemic on HIV care engagement among BSMM+ in the US South has not been explored in depth. METHODS: BSMM+ (n = 27) were recruited from a longitudinal cohort in Dallas and Houston, …

Enhancing Mental Health and Cognitive Functioning in Victims of Violence: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Sleep Disorders Among Journalists, Human Rights Defenders, and Relatives of Disappeared Persons in Mexico City.

In Mexico, pervasive violence, forced disappearances, and homicides have deeply impacted certain groups, particularly journalists, activists, and human rights defenders, who are at high risk of victimization. While these groups receive state support for physical and legal safety, mental health and sleep-focused interventions remain insufficient. Collaborating with a Mexico City-based institution supporting human rights defenders and journalists, we conducted a psychometric assessment of 47 individuals affected by violence. Results showed that 80% exhibited symptoms of post-traumatic stress dis…

Association of Daily Activities With Maternal-Child Bonding, Parenting Self-Efficacy, Social Support, and Parenting Behaviors Among Survivors Living in an Intimate Partner Violence Shelter: A Daily Diary Study.

Following a traumatic event such as intimate partner violence (IPV), survivors often experience stress related to the violence. These high levels of stress related to IPV can be associated with the daily activities of survivors and their relationships with their children, such as maternal-child bonding. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between daily activities, daily stress levels, parenting self-efficacy and behaviors, and maternal-child bonding among survivors living in an IPV shelter using an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology. Twenty-five mothe…

Treating post-traumatic stress disorder in survivors of community and domestic violence using narrative exposure therapy: a case series in two public health centers in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.

Prevalence of violence in Brazil is high, which contributes to an increasing number of trauma-related disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aims to present a case series of PTSD patients treated with narrative exposure therapy (NET) in two public health centers in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Health professionals were trained in a two-week workshop to deliver NET. Exposure to violence and other potentially traumatic events, as well as PTSD were assessed by interviewers before treatment and six months later in follow-up interviews conducted by blind assessors. Mult…

Depression, Anxiety, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and a History of Pervasive Gender-Based Violence Among Women Asylum Seekers Who Have Undergone Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Retrospective Case Review.

We sought to evaluate the frequency of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and any experiences of violence in women who had undergone Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and were seeking asylum in the United States. We undertook a retrospective qualitative descriptive study of FGM/C cases seen in an asylum clinic over a 2-year period. Standardized questionnaires provided quantitative scores for anxiety, depression and PTSD. Clients' personal and physician medical affidavits were analyzed for experiences of violence. Of the 13 cases, anxiety and depression were exhibited by 92 and 100% of women, w…

Neglect, Sexual Abuse, and Witnessing Intimate Partner Violence During Childhood Predicts Later Life Violent Attitudes Against Children Among Kenyan Women: Evidence of Intergenerational Risk Transmission From Cross-Sectional Data.

Violence against children, including corporal punishment, remains a global concern. Understanding sources of support for corporal punishment within cultures, and the potential for intergenerational transmission of child maltreatment, is essential for policy-development and community engagement to protect children. In this study, we use data from a cross-section of women in Meru County, Kenya (n = 1,974) to profile attitudes toward violence against children using the Velicer Attitudes Towards Violence-Child subscale. We find reported histories of sexual abuse, emotional and physical neglect, an…

Self- and other-directed forms of violence and their relationship with lifetime DSM-5 psychiatric disorders: Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III).

A combined history of violence toward self and others has been reported in clinical and incarcerated populations. Psychiatric disorders have been implicated as risk factors. This study examines the lifetime prevalence of this combined violence in the general population and its associations with DSM-5 psychiatric disorders in comparison with other- and self-directed violence. Data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III) were analyzed, including 36,309 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. Violent behavior was defined by suicide attempts; recurrent suic…

Prevalence, associated factors, and association of intimate partner violence and suicidal behaviors among women of reproductive age in Asia: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is strongly linked to suicidal behaviors (ideation, plans, attempts), affecting 1 in 3 women globally, with prevalence varying across regions. Sociocultural and economic factors shape IPV and SB risk differently. This review will estimate prevalence, risk factors, and associations of IPV and SBs among women of reproductive age in Asia to provide region-specific evidence for targeted interventions. We will systematically search PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Google Scholar for studies published up to 30 November 2025, following PRIS…

A Delphi study to prioritize implementation strategies to increase the adoption of screening and referral for brain injury among survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault within community-based organizations.

BACKGROUND: Women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) are at a high risk for injuries to the head, neck, and face that can result in a traumatic brain injury (BI). Despite increasing evidence of the high risk for BI in this vulnerable population, IPV-BI screenings remain critically under-implemented in community-based organizations (CBOs) serving IPV survivors. The aim of this community-engaged dissemination and implementation project was to co-identify implementation strategies to increase the adoption of IPV-BI screening and referral within intimate partner violence (IPV)-serving …

Eight-year trajectories of behavior problems and resilience in children exposed to early-life intimate partner violence: The overlapping and distinct effects of individual factors, maternal characteristics, and early intervention.

Childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) can have lasting effects on well-being. Children also display resilience following IPV exposure. Yet, little research has prospectively followed changes in both maladaptive and adaptive outcomes in children who experience IPV in early life. The goal of the current study was to investigate how child factors (irritability), trauma history (severity of IPV exposure), maternal factors (mental health, parenting), and early intervention relate to trajectories of behavior problems (internalizing and externalizing problems) and resilience (prosocia…

"He'd Tell Me I was Frigid and Ugly and Force me to Have Sex with Him Anyway": Women's Experiences of Co-Occurring Sexual Violence and Psychological Abuse in Heterosexual Relationships.

Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a common yet hidden form of violence. It is primarily perpetrated against women by their male partners and is associated with a range of serious mental and physical health outcomes. Despite these harms, it is chronically under-researched. In particular, the overlaps between IPSV and psychological abuse in relationships are poorly understood. Extant literature has focused primarily on the relationship between IPSV and physical violence, neglecting the fact that IPSV often involves verbal or emotional coercion, threats or blackmail rather than the use o…

"We've Already Endured the Trauma, Who is Going to Either End that Cycle or Continue to Feed It?": The Influence of Family and Legal Systems on Native American Women's Intimate Partner Violence Experiences.

Native American (NA) women experience higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) compared to other U.S. racial/ethnic groups, yet previous research has not sufficiently examined the complex determinants shaping their IPV experiences. This research explores the interplay of family networks and legal systems influencing NA women's IPV experiences. Data were collected through in-depth individual and group interviews with 42 NA survivors and 41 health/social service providers from July 2016 to June 2017 in NA communities from three different U.S. regions. We used Grounded Theory to develop em…
