Photobiomodulation as adjunctive therapy for guided bone regeneration. A microCT study in osteoporotic rat model.

Regeneration of diseased bone is challenging. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) has been applied to favor the bone repair. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is also a recognized therapy able to improve bone repair in healthy and diseased individuals. Thus, with the hypothesis that PBM therapy could improve the GBR of diseased bone, this study evaluated the effect of PBM as adjunctive therapy to GBR in osteoporotic rats. Osteoporosis was induced in rats using the oophorectomy model. Then, 5-mm calvaria bone defects were created and treated according to the experimental groups, as follows: with no further t

Intramural hematoma of colon: Case report of 2 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Colonic intramural hematomas are rarely encountered clinical entity. Colonic intramural hematomas are frequently associated with blunt trauma, and they could occur spontaneously in patients under anticoagulant therapy or with bleeding diathesis. There were few reports on synchronous colon cancer and intramural hematoma. Intramural hematomas of gastrointestinal tract in those patients undergoing anticoagulation treatment often occurred at the esophagus, duodenum, and small intestine, while colon was rarely affected site. Clinical symptoms of colonic intramural hematomas may includ

COVID-19 in a liver transplant recipient: Could iatrogenic immunosuppression have prevented severe pneumonia? A case report.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID) is a new and highly contagious infectious disease caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19 or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). There is limited data regarding the incidence and management of COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients' post-transplantation. In the pre-COVID-19 era, these patients were already at an increased risk of developing opportunistic infections. These often manifested with atypical symptoms. CASE SUMMARY: We report another case of uneventful COVID-19 pneumonia in a 58-year old male who was 18 mo' post liver transplantation

Successful Treatment of Anal Canal Cancer Metastasis to the Cranial Bones: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Single metastasis to the cranial bone represents a very uncommon occurrence that can arise from an anal canal cancer. No cases of cranial bone metastasis from anal canal carcinoma are available in the literature. Herein, we present a case of a unique metastatic lesion to the right parietal bone that occurred after curative chemoradiotherapy of primary squamous cell anal canal carcinoma. The patient received radiotherapy and systemic platinum-based chemotherapy, with optimal local control, high compliance and a well tolerable level of toxicity.

Differential effect with septal and apical RV pacing on ventricular activation in patients with left bundle branch block assessed by non-invasive electrical imaging and in silico modelling.

PURPOSE: It is uncertain whether right ventricular (RV) lead position in cardiac resynchronization therapy impacts response. There has been little detailed analysis of the activation patterns in RV septal pacing (RVSP), especially in the CRT population. We compare left bundle branch block (LBBB) activation patterns with RV pacing (RVP) within the same patients with further comparison between RV apical pacing (RVAP) and RVSP. METHODS: Body surface mapping was undertaken in 14 LBBB patients after CRT implantation. Nine patients had RVAP, 5 patients had RVSP. Activation parameters included left

Clostridium paraputrificum septic arthritis and osteomyelitis of shoulder: A case report and review of literature.

Septic arthritis due to Clostridium species is rare. We report the first case of Clostridium paraputrificum native shoulder septic arthritis and osteomyelitis. An 86-year-old woman with osteoarthritis presented with acute-onset right shoulder pain. Injection of the glenohumeral joint with methylprednisolone resulted in worsening of pain. Synovial fluid analysis was consistent with septic arthritis and culture of the synovial fluid grew C. paraputrificum. Arthroscopic irrigation and debridement of shoulder joint with 6 weeks of ertapenem was unsuccessful, with persistence of C. paraputrificum f

Arthroscopic double bone block augmentation is a salvage procedure for anterior and posterior shoulder instability secondary to glenoid bone loss.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe a one-step arthroscopic anterior and posterior bone block augmentation technique for bidirectional shoulder instability and to present preliminary results. METHODS: Seven consecutive patients who underwent a concomitant anterior and posterior bone block procedure between 2007 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical scores, return to sport rate, and complications were assessed. Radiological outcome, with CT scan at 6 months and plain radiographs at final follow-up were reviewed. Patient reported functional outcomes were also assessed via

Marantic endocarditis: incidental infarcts leading to diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is a well-described phenomenon associated with malignancies due to hypercoaguable state. In the setting of pancreatic cancer, NBTE is more commonly diagnosed postmortem. We describe a case of a man who was diagnosed with pancreatic carcinoma after incidental finding of NBTE. Imaging incidentally revealed multiple strokes, bilateral renal and splenic infarcts, while subsequent workup for cardioembolic source demonstrated a 1.1×0.7 cm mitral valve vegetation. As multiple blood cultures were sterile and patient lacked clinical signs of infection, an un

Antibiotics, steroids, and combination therapy in chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps in adults.

Despite a lack of robust data regarding their efficacy, oral antibiotics and steroids remain two of the most common treatments for chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP). We sought to objectively compare the efficacy of antibiotics and steroids, independently and in combination, for the initial treatment of CRSsNP. To that end, we conducted a retrospective chart review of 100 patients-51 men and 49 women, age 20 to 85 years (mean: 50)-who were treated for CRSsNP from January 2010 through January 2015. Of this group, 17 patients were treated with an antibiotic only, 28 with a ster

Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate After Prostatic Urethral Lift Surgery: Feasibility and Technical Considerations from a Multi-Institutional Case Series.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Ten percent of patients undergoing prostatic urethral lift (PUL) require repeat surgical treatment within 3 years. We describe the feasibility and considerations of performing holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) as a salvage therapy after previous PUL. METHODS: Men who had undergone HoLEP after PUL were retrospectively identified from three institutions with surgeons experienced in HoLEP. Subjects were characterized by age, time from PUL procedure (months) to HoLEP surgery, indication for retreatment, and pre-operative prostate volume by ultrasound. O
