Rectified heat transfer into translating and pulsating vapor bubbles.

It is well known that, when a stationary vapor bubble is subject to a sufficiently intense acoustic field, it will grow by rectified heat transfer even in a subcooled liquid. The object of this paper is to study how translation, and the ensuing convective effects, influence this process. It is shown that, depending on the initial temperature distribution and other factors, convection can cause a destabilization of the bubble or its faster growth. Significant effects occur in parameter ranges readily encountered in practice. The phenomena described can therefore be exploited for bubble manageme

[Occurrence and evaluation of a law frequency noise in residential buildings].

Low-frequency noise emitted into the environment by technical equipment in the residential buildings, including equipment of workshops for services or production near these buildings, was measured. In the spectrum of noise derived from installations and equipment in residential buildings and shops low frequency (20-125 Hz) sounds and infrasounds (below 20 Hz) were detected. Their sources were mainly pumps in hydrophors, lifts, cooling machinery, central heating, air conditioning and ventilating installations. The analysed noise was in a small degree only damped by partitions in buildings and p

Neonatal and pediatric thoracic ultrasonography.

Ultrasound examination of the thorax (TUS) can be quite suitable for children because their unique thoracic anatomy provides many acoustic windows into the chest. This review article covers techniques, indications, and applications of TUS in neonates, infants, and children, including common aspects and applications, like pulmonary consolidation and atelectasis, pleural effusion and pneumothorax and main neonatal pathologies such as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and transitory tachypnea of the newborn (TTN).

En route to disentangle the impact and neurobiological substrates of early vocalizations: learning from Rett syndrome.

Research on acoustic communication and its underlying neurobiological substrates has led to new insights about the functioning of central pattern generators (CPGs). CPG-related atypicalities may point to brainstem irregularities rather than cortical malfunctions for early vocalizations/babbling. The "vocal pattern generator," together with other CPGs, seems to have great potential in disentangling neurodevelopmental disorders and potentially predict neurological development.

Transotic approach to the cerebellopontine angle. 1992.

The transotic approach to the cerebellopontine angle has been developed at the University of Zurich for the removal of acoustic tumors in an effort to increase operative exposure and enhance facial nerve preservation and reconstruction. Key steps involve the total removal of all pneumatic cell tracts with middle ear and eustachian tube obliteration, followed by complete otic capsule removal for tumor exposure. This article discusses the advantages, disadvantages, and technique of this approach.

Purinergic signaling in the inner ear.

Epithelial cells of the inner ear coordinate their ion transport activity through a number of mechanisms. One important mechanism is the autocrine and paracrine signaling among neighboring cells in the ear via nucleotides, such as adenosine, ATP and UTP. This review summarizes observations on the release, detection and degradation of nucleotides by epithelial cells of the inner ear. Purinergic signaling is thought to be important for endolymph ion homeostasis and for protection from acoustic over-stimulation.

Microsurgical anatomy of VII and VIII cranial nerves and related arteries in the cerebellopontine angle.

The relationships of VII and VIII cranial nerves and related arteries are reviewed in 26 preparations by microdissection techniques. These vessels may be grouped in large (AICA, PICA), medium (LA, SA, CSA, RPI) and small calibre (vasa nervorum, radicular and medullar branches). The importance of these structures in acoustic neuroma surgery, vestibular neurectomy and cross-compression syndromes is discussed. "Vascular loops" and "elongated arteries" are normal structures present at birth.

Intracranial glossopharyngeal neurinomas. Report of two cases with special emphasis on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Two patients with intracranial glossopharyngeal neurinoma are described. In both patients, neurologic signs and findings of conventional radiologic and computed tomography examinations suggested a diagnosis of acoustic neurinoma. Magnetic resonance imaging, however, definitely indicated that the mass had actually arisen from the lower cranial nerves. This was confirmed at operation. The superb sensitivity and specificity of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of posterior fossa extraaxial mass are emphasized.

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia of traumatic origin.

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia of traumatic origin is very rare. Two interesting cases are presented, one with a skull fracture involving the jugular foramen and the other associated with an operation for an acoustic tumor. Carbamazepine gave good results and both patients improved within 24 hours. The glossopharyngeal and vagal nerves might have been injured in the region of the root entry zone giving rise to the neuralgia. Pertinent literature is briefly discussed.

Auditory function in sickle cell anemia.

Auditory function was assessed in nine black subjects with sickle cell anemia and compared with a control population. No differences were found for measures of hearing acuity and undistorted speech discrimination. However, some suggestion of reduced neural function was observed in terms of acoustic reflex measures and time-compressed speech discrimination. One subject with sickle cell anemia displayed a distinctive auditory profile that we treat separately.

Tympanometric curves and otosclerosis.

Patients with clinical otosclerosis (28 ears) were examined audiometrically and with an electroacoustic impedance bridge. The results were compared to corresponding findings for normal ears. The tympanometric curves of surgically proven otosclerosis were found to differ characteristically from those of normal ears. A curve typical of footplate fixation shows a rapid increase in acoustic impedance as external auditory canal pressure is reduced from ambient air pressure.

Power Ultrasound as an Intensification Strategy in Food Biomanufacturing: Applications, Mechanisms and Perspectives.

Power ultrasound has been investigated as an intensification tool for fermentation, aging, enzymatic hydrolysis, and extraction in food biomanufacturing. Treatment outcomes vary with matrix properties, application stage, acoustic exposure, and evaluation criteria, leaving optimization largely empirical. This review compares ultrasound applications across these four operations and evaluates combinations with pulsed electric fields, cold atmospheric plasma, microwave processing, and membrane separation. Potential roles in precision fermentation, microbial protein production, synthetic microbial

Does the Apple airpods pro 2 hearing aid feature meet prescribed targets for standardized audiograms?

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to record deviation of Apple AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid Feature (HAF) output from prescriptive targets (i.e., NAL-NL2) using two manually entered, standardized audiograms. We also aimed to record the acoustic effects of the HAF tuning controls and their utility for fine tuning HAF outputs. DESIGN AND STUDY SAMPLE: HAF output was quantified by real-ear aided responses measured bilaterally in an acoustic manikin using 55, 65, and 75 dB SPL recorded speech inputs. Repeated measurements were made for left and right earbuds, from two sets of AirPods Pro 2 devices. Two manually e

Heart rate control by listening to light.

The auditory-cardiac interplay enables sound perception to modulate cardiac rhythm and homeostasis. However, its underlying regulatory mechanism and therapeutic potential remain largely underexplored, due to fundamental limitations in acoustic stimulation precision. Here we present an opto-mechano-cardiac coupling strategy that bypasses the propagation constraints of sound wave to enable precise acoustic modulation of cardiac function. Utilizing dynamically reconfigurable optical traps (1064 nm, 100 kHz refresh rate), we translated musical rhythms into programmable otolith oscillation patterns

Investigating stenosis effects on flow dynamics in an intradialytic shunt vessel model using particle image velocimetry.

Arteriovenous shunts created during hemodialysis are common sites of stenosis. While shunt (blood flow) sounds may be potential indicators in developing noninvasive, simple stenosis screening methods, previous studies have not shown sufficient detection accuracy for practical stenosis screening applications. Despite several studies aiming to improve stenosis screening methods, the detailed mechanism of shunt sound generation remains unclear. We aimed to clarify the mechanism of shunt sound generation to aid the development of a stenosis screening method using shunt sounds. We analyzed flow in

Multi-Electrode Acoustoelectric Imaging of Current Source Density via Scalar Potential Reconstruction: Feasibility Study in a Cube Phantom.

Acoustoelectric (AE) imaging has the potential to reconstruct current sources with high spatial and temporal resolution. However, a significant challenge is low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which complicates source detection and ultimately degrades spatial resolution. In this study, we propose a novel multi-electrode reconstruction method to image the current source density (CSD) in biological tissue at high image frame rates. This approach reconstructs the scalar potential of the current source with only single-step inversion regardless of the number of electrodes. It effectively removes modu

Song but not colour divergence constrains hybridization in birds.

Mating signals, such as songs or plumage ornamentation, are key prezygotic barriers that promote behavioral isolation by ensuring that individuals are able to mate with conspecifics and avoid the costs of hybridization. Previous family-level comparative studies in birds have revealed that song similarity is positively correlated with the incidence of hybridization, whereas genomic research in avian hybrid zones suggests that plumage divergence does not necessarily prevent gene flow. However, no study has jointly evaluated the relative contribution of both signalling modalities to hybridization
