The results are reported of an epidemiological study carried out in the province of Treviso in north-east Italy. The research was designed to ascertain the sensitization, through an IgE mechanism, to the main allergens present on cattle farms. Also reported are the results of a mite survey undertaken in ten barns in the same region. The correct selection of vehicles for patch testing is crucial in the evaluation of suspected allergic contact dermatitis. We reviewed the literature by using Grateful Med software for the years 1966-1992, utilizing the subjects "vehicles" and "allergic contact dermatitis" or "patch tests". This paper aims to establish the diagnostic reliability of the Prick test and its correlation to other techniques used in allergologic diagnosis: intracutaneous testing, RAST, hemagglutination, histamine liberation test. A total of 330 patients with eczematous lesions were tested with 27 topical substances. Among the 88 patients with leg ulcers, 85 (2%) were allergic to one or more substances present in one out of two cases of allergy to wool alcohol. Among the 242 patients suffering from eczematous dermatitis, the percentage of allergic reactions reached 54.6%. A great number of allergic reactions of cetyl alcohol (11.2%), chloramphenicol (10%) and sodium lauryl sulfate (6.4%) was observed. This case shows that benzalkonium chloride is an important sensitizer for contact dermatitis.The patient did not respond to conventional eczema treatment. Pathological examination and detailed history-taking revealed that benzalkonium chloride in the detergent was the causative factor. After avoiding exposure to this allergen, the condition improved, emphasizing the need to consider contact dermatitis in patients with refractory eczema.

We herein explore the physical factors of carbon dioxide, temperature increases, and humidity on intensifying allergen and fungal growth, and worsening air quality. 5 patients, all using a mephenesin -containing ointment, with an acute contact dermatitis also presented an id-like spread with erythema multiforme features. In 4 patients, patch tests were performed and since mephenesin was the common allergen in each of these cases, we may assume that this is also the cause of the erythema multiforme-like lesions.

Anaphylaxis is an acute, life-threatening reaction that can occur due to a variety of triggers. It is often associated with allergen exposure, such as food, venom, or medications; however, there are other less-common causes, and many patients are ultimately classified as idiopathic. In this report, we described a patient with recurrent reactions attributed to food exposure. Further evaluation revealed an alternative, less common diagnosis.

A deterioration in chronic inflammatory ear disease despite topical medication, or failure of the condition to improve with such treatment, should raise the possibility of allergic contact dermatitis. Allergen testing (patch testing) is the 'gold standard' method of identifying an agent causing allergic contact dermatitis. We describe an ENT patch test series applied by our department as a screening device for this condition.

Sesquiterpene lactones are a large, diverse group of chemicals found in several plant families that cause allergic contact dermatitis. The biological, botanical, allergenic, and structural significance of sesquiterpene lactones is explored as well as the clinical characteristics of cutaneous reactions. The association with UV-light sensitivity and proposed mechanisms for this relationship as well as new developments in patch test methods and treatment are reviewed.

The plasma cell gingivitis condition, an uncommon, nonmalignant lesion, is characterized by an offending allergen which causes a massive plasma cell infiltration in gingival connective tissue. Occasionally, soft tissue biopsy of affected and normal tissues is necessary for proper diagnosis. Blood analysis may rule out other systematic disorders with oral manifestations. A patient with seropositive, nodular rheumatoid arthritis (RA) developed contact allergy to gold jewellery following a severe skin rash which occurred after 13 weeks of treatment with sodium aurothiomalate. Patch testing confirmed that the contact allergy was due to gold. This is the first proved case of contact allergy to gold or any other compound initiated by systemic administration of the allergen.

Alpha-GAL syndrome (AGS) is a type of allergy to mammalian meat and other foods or pharmaceuticals made from mammalian substrates.
