We have developed a non-contact system of interrogating the cornea by monitoring the pressure pulse transmitted from the carotid artery. using new electronic developments such as the phase-lock loop, coupled with computer technology and ultrasound, we have produced an experimental curve for progressive stenosis of the carotid artery in animals. Using known physical laws and accepted mathematical principles, we generated the theoretical curve for that same type of progressive occlusion of the carotid artery and have found a high degree of correlation, within 4.5 per cent error.

1. Decreases of serum calcium concentration in dogs lead to increased basal tone of Oddi's sphincter in the employed experimental model. 2. This effect is independent of the agent used for decreasing the serum calcium level. 3. Spasmolysis was observed immediately after the injection of CaCl2. CaCl2 alone, however, had no effect in "normocalcaemic" animals. 4. Local decrease of calcium level plays no significant role in the sphincter spasm. It is suggested that the spasm is elicited by increased smooth muscle excitability as a consequence of the hypocalcaemic state prevailing in the body.

The influence of the poly(I)-poly(C) complex with poly-l-lysine on the development and course of experimental tick-borne encephalitis was studied in Macaca rhesus monkeys. Prophylactic administration of the substance under study, although not preventing the disease, modified its course and facilitated recovery of the animals. Poly(I)-poly(C) and its complex with poly-l-lysine were shown to have no effect on production of infectious virus or its antigen demonstrable by the immunofluorescence procedure in HEp-2 cells chronically infected with tick-borne encephalitis virus.

The eighth Colombian case of lobomycosis and the one hundredth in the world literature is reported here. The patient was a 38-year-old female who showed a bilobed mass on the left forearm which had appeared at the site from where a similar lesion had been excised 19 years previously. She had always lived in a rural area, located in the humid subtropical forest. The tissue reactions to the fungus as well as the fruitless attempts to culture it are described. An analysis of the relevant literature is made and suggestions for experimental animal models are given in the text.

Short-chain fatty acids were determined prior to therapy in seven patients with Reye's syndrome. Elevated concentrations of propionate, butyrate, and isobutyrate were found in all patients. Isovalerate concentrations were high in three patients. A patient sustained mild bilateral alkali burns of the cornea following ocular exposure to a commercial hair straightening preparation. This compound and three other products all had an alkaline pH which was not reduced to neutrality by the neutralizer provided. Corneal alkali burns similar to those seen in our patient were produced in experimental animals after brief exposure. Histologic changes were primarily limited to the cornea. The warning against ocular exposure printed on the containers or package insert is not sufficiently emphatic to protect the consumer.

A 5% aqueous solution of degraded carrageenan derived from the red seaweed Eucheuma spinosum was fed to guinea pigs in their drinking water over a period of 20-45 days. Occult blood in the faeces and multiple ulcers in the caecum, colon and rectum occurred in 100% of animals by the 30th day. The clinical and pathological features bear a close resemblance to human ulcerative colitis. The method provides a simple experimental model for the study of various aspects of the pathology of ulcerative lesions in the large intestine as well as the effects of therapeutic agents.
