A comparative study of the behavioral, personality, and fire history characteristics of residential and outpatient adolescents (ages 12-17) with firesetting behaviors.

Juvenile firesetting behavior has received relatively little research attention and previous attempts to systematically classify this heterogeneous population of children has been only partially successful. Currently there is no literature available that defines treatment and intervention needs of adolescents in residential treatment with problematic firesetting behavior and whether these needs differ from their outpatient cohorts. Data were gathered from a residential (N=17) and outpatient (N=30) sample detailing firesetting history, behavioral functioning, aggression, and personality traits

Effects of two estradiol regimens on anxiety and depressive behaviors and trophic effects in peripheral tissues in a rodent model.

BACKGROUND: With aging and menopause, which are associated with decreases in ovarian steroids such as 17beta-estradiol (E(2)), women might experience negative psychological symptoms, including anxiety and depression. Some women use E(2)-based therapies to alleviate these symptoms, but E(2) has been associated with trophic effects that might increase vulnerability to some steroid-sensitive cancers, such as breast cancer, in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationships between the possible beneficial effects of E(2) on anxiety and depressive

Eosinophilic esophagitis in cystic fibrosis: A case series with long-term follow-up.

Challenging mealtime behaviors in young children and difficulties in meeting their dietary intake recommendations are sources of parenting stress and associated with negative quality of life. The gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations of cystic fibrosis (CF) can often present similarly to a GI pathology unrelated to CF. Specifically, this case series focuses on three toddlers with CF who presented with oral aversion and challenging mealtime behaviors and later were diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Though EoE often presents with dysphagia, younger patients commonly present with nons

State transitions in the substantia nigra reticulata predict the onset of motor deficits in models of progressive dopamine depletion in mice.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder whose cardinal motor symptoms are attributed to dysfunction of basal ganglia circuits under conditions of low dopamine. Despite well-established physiological criteria to define basal ganglia dysfunction, correlations between individual parameters and motor symptoms are often weak, challenging their predictive validity and causal contributions to behavior. One limitation is that basal ganglia pathophysiology is studied only at end-stages of depletion, leaving an impoverished understanding of when deficits emerge and how they

Aggressive Behavior Among Persons With Schizophrenia and Those Who Are Developing Schizophrenia: Attempting to Understand the Limited Evidence on Causality.

People with, and those who are developing, schizophrenia are at increased risk to engage in aggressive behavior (AGB). Some incidents lead to criminal prosecution. Most people with schizophrenia who commit crimes engage in delinquency and/or AGB prior to first episode. A large proportion of these individuals have a history of childhood conduct disorder (CD) and brain abnormalities suggestive of abnormal neural development distinctive from that of others with schizophrenia. Factors contributing to schizophrenia that is preceded by CD include failing to learn not-to-behave aggressively in early

[Saint Louis encephalitis: case report].

Saint Louis encephalitis is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes. In Argentina sporadic cases are registered. Symptomatic illness is unusual in children. We present a case of meningoencephalitis caused by an uncommon viral infection. The clinical signs and symptoms are unusual for pediatric patients and the bilateral thalamic compromise showed on magnetic resonance has not been described previously. An 8-year-old girl consulted due to fever, behavior disorders and ataxia. Clonus and neck stiffness were detected at physical exam. Cerebrospinal fluid revealed mononuclear leukocytosis; bilateral ische

Effects of cognitive behavior therapy on regional brain volume in spider-phobic patients: preliminary results.

Successful cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for spider phobia is able to change patients' brain activation during visual symptom provocation. The present voxel-based morphometry study investigated whether this therapy approach can additionally affect brain structure. We analyzed gray matter volume of 12 spider-phobic patients prior to CBT and in a six-month follow-up investigation, and contrasted the results with data from 13 non-phobic controls. CBT provoked a dramatic decrease in syndrome severity in the clinical group as indexed by self-report and by a behavioral approach test. This was acc

Neuropsychiatric evaluations of postictal behavioral changes.

Postictal behavioral changes (PBCs), including psychosis, aggression, and mood change, are commonly observed in patients with epilepsy. Recognition and description of the clinical manifestations of PBCs would help in understanding and treating patients. Additionally, various quantified objective scales that are widely available in clinical psychiatry could be used to assess the clinical symptoms of PBCs. There are few reports in which objective rating scales have been used to assess neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with epilepsy. However, there have been a small number of studies on inter

Effects of inhibitory rTMS on bladder function in Parkinson's disease patients.

Patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) may present with lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction characterized by involuntary detrusor overactivity. We evaluated possible impact of a 2-week course of low frequency 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on LUT behavior in eight advanced PD patients complaining of urinary disturbances. We tested the effects of rTMS measuring urodynamic examination and the International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS) questionnaire, used for evaluation of subjective LUTS. rTMS was able to improve temporarily LUT behavior in PD patients, incre

Validation of the multiple language versions of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-37 for refugee adolescents.

The objective of this study is to provide preliminary psychometric properties of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-37 (HSCL-37A) for refugee adolescents. The HSCL-37A is a modification of the well-known HSCL-25 and assesses symptoms of internalizing and externalizing problems that have been associated with reactions to trauma. Four independent heterogeneous samples (N=3890) of unaccompanied refugee minors, immigrants, and native Dutch and Belgian adolescents were assessed at school. The confirmative factor analyses, per language version, support the two-factor structure of internalizing and extern

Substance use and impulsive behaviors among adolescents with eating disorders.

Results of past research suggest that the existence of bulimic behaviors (binge eating and/or purging) may be an indicator of increased likelihood of substance use. We investigated incidence of substance use among adolescent girls (mean age = 15.4 years) with anorexia nervosa (n = 59) or bulimia nervosa (n = 58). The incidence of substance use among girls with anorexia nervosa was low, particularly after removing those anorexic adolescents with bulimic symptoms. Nearly one-third of girls with bulimia nervosa had smoked tobacco cigarettes, had used marijuana, and were drinking alcohol at least

Immediate nonallergic psychotic reaction to intramuscular procaine penicillin.

BACKGROUND: Though little known by medical personnel, an immediate nonallergic psychotic reaction to intramuscular procaine penicillin has been reported occasionally from many countries since 1951. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case report describes a patient whose violent behavior, provoked by this reaction, resulted in legal action taken against him. Two other nonviolent cases are presented and are followed by a review of the literature. RESULTS: Signs and symptoms of this reaction that appears to be to the procaine component resemble a pressor response and are therefore contrary to the signs a

Correlations between the MMPI and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale in schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients.

Though self-report measures and clinician-based ratings are extensively used to document psychopathology, there has been little work examining the relationship between these different types of measurement techniques. The current work examined the relationship between the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) in patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Correlations were calculated in an initial exploratory sample, and a set of relationships was selected for confirmation in a second sample. The BPRS items of hallucinator

Comparison of lithium and haloperidol therapy in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Three patients suffering from Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome were initially treated with haloperidol. Depressive side effects and symptom breakthrough necessitated the search for another agent. The efficacy of lithium carbonate in treating stereotyped hyperkinetic behavior (such as is seen in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome) prompted the evaluation of lithium carbonate. An objective behavioral observation technique, clinical ratings and the patient's subjective reports were used to systematically record the response to treatment during the entire course of the study. Initially blood plasma Li+

Chemogenetic activation of VTA neurons induces anxiety-like behavior in a Parkinson's disease model.

As Parkinson's disease (PD) advances, there may be a compensatory activation of neurons in the ventral midbrain, potentially linked to the manifestation of non-motor symptoms in individuals with PD. These non-motor symptoms, such as anxiety, often precede the onset of motor symptoms, with female patients generally exhibiting higher levels of anxiety. Nonetheless, the precise mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain inadequately elucidated. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) of the midbrain functions as a pivotal nucleus capable of encoding both positive and negative emotional signals, potent

Excessive Postural Tachycardia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome in Youth: Associations With Distress, Impairment, Health Behaviors, and Medication Recommendations.

Among adolescents with fatigue and postural dizziness, it is unclear how health behaviors and emotional distress relate to the presence of excessive postural tachycardia. We prospectively evaluated adolescents aged 13-22 years presenting with symptoms suggestive of autonomic dysfunction between September 2017 and December 2018. Patients underwent standard 10-minute, 70-degree head-up tilt testing. Clinician diagnoses and recommendations were recorded from the medical record. Patients completed validated self-report measures of lifestyle factors, autonomic symptoms, depression, anxiety, and fun

Dance promotes positive benefits for negative symptoms in autism spectrum disorder (ASD): A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized as a neurodevelopmental disorder with stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. Dance practice can elicit esthesia to stimulate the communication process through the notion of the phenomenal body that is recognized in an expressive and symbolic space. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review to identify how dance promotes positive benefits for the negative symptoms in ASD. METHOD: We formulated the research question based on PICO: "What is the influence of dance on negative symptoms in individuals with autism spectrum disorder?". Datab

Meaning in life is associated with the psychopathology of eating disorders: differences depending on the diagnosis.

Previous studies indicated that meaning in life was inversely associated with eating behaviors and a negative attitude toward food, body satisfaction, and borderline symptoms. However, research on the association between meaning in life and eating disorder psychopathology is scarce, and there are no studies on the association between meaning in life and the eating disorder psychopathology depending on the diagnosis. The aim of the present study is to verify whether meaning in life is differentially associated with a broad range of psychopathology symptoms commonly observed in people with ED, d

The role of stress in the pathogenesis and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Individuals with OCD often identify psychosocial stress as a factor that exacerbates their symptoms, and many trace the onset of symptoms to a stressful period of life or a discrete traumatic incident. However, the pathophysiological relationship between stress and OCD remains poorly characterized: it is unclear whether trauma or stress is an independent cause of OCD symptoms, a triggering factor that interacts with a preexisting diathesis, or simply a nonspecific factor that can exacerbate OCD along with other aspects of psychiatric symptomatology. Nonetheless, preclinical research has demons

Severity of eating disorder symptoms related to oxytocin receptor polymorphisms in anorexia nervosa.

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone important for social behavior and differences in psychological traits have been associated with variants of the oxytocin receptor gene in healthy people. We examined whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) correlated with clinical symptoms in women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and healthy comparison (HC) women. Subjects completed clinical assessments and provided DNA for analysis. Subjects were divided into four groups: HC, subjects currently with anorexia nervosa (AN-C), subjects with a history of anorexia ne
