An outbreak of aseptic meningitis involving 36 children is described. Enterovirus type 71, a recently recognized cause of central nervous system and systemic illness in children, was found to be the responsible agent. On initial lumbar puncture, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) polymorphonuclear (PMN) cell predominance was seen in 64%, and greater than 200 CSF white blood cells (WBC)/mm3 was seen in 25% of these patients. Fifty-four per cent of the patients subjected to repeat lumbar puncture and a significant rise in the number of CSF WBC/mm3, the majority with the maintenance of a PMN cell predomin…

BACKGROUND: Pre-diabetes is considered to be an important reversible stage of type 2 diabetes (T2DM); thus, early identification of pre-diabetes may help in the prevention of T2DM. This study aimed to explore the relationship between white blood cell (WBC) counts and the cumulative risk of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) regulation at 6 years.
METHODS: A community-based health examination survey was conducted among individuals who were randomly selected from 1300 residents living in China in 2010 to 2016. The participants were divided into four groups according to WBC baseline level. This stud

BACKGROUND Haplo-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has provided potential donors for patients lacking available HLA-matched donors. ABO blood type compatibility has been reported to be associated with HSCT outcomes. However, few studies have investigated the role of ABO compatibility in haplo-identical HSCT of AML patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 42 adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients who received unmanipulated haplo-identical peripheral blood HSCT at the Chinese PLA General Hospital between Jan 2013 and Dec 2017. We analyzed the role of

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) in patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) secondary to gastrointestinal chronic blood loss (CBL), who received chronic transfusion support.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 38 patients with IDA (hemoglobin [Hb] < 10 g/dL and ferritin < 12 ng/mL or transferrin saturation [TSAT] < 16%) refractory or intolerant to oral iron therapy that necessitated transfusion support in the previous 12 months. They were treated with FCM (500-2500 mg). The primary endpoint was to evaluate

We present a case report of a successful high-dose melphalan therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation without the use of allogeneic blood product support in a 70-year-old patient suffering from multiple myeloma. Based on the experience in this case and thorough evaluation of the literature, we consider pre-transplant Hb level of 11-12 g/dl, platelet count higher than 70/nl, good WHO performance status of two and lower and informed consent as important eligibility criteria. During cytopenia recommended supportive measures include growth factor support with erythropoietin and G-CSF, p.o.

BACKGROUND: Isohemagglutinins directed against the donor blood group frequently delay erythroid engraftment after major ABO-mismatched allogeneic hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation (HPCT). Graft-versus-host reactions are capable of accelerating the clearance of isohemagglutinins. Whether immunogenicity of the A- and B-antigen is important in this process is unknown.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data of 807 patients from three centers were screened for patients with major or bidirectionally ABO-mismatched donors. Clinical data and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion support were analyzed retr

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is a promising treatment option for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Co-infusion of umbilical cord blood (UCB) in haploidentical cell transplantation (haplo HCT) (haplo-cord HCT) for acute myeloid leukemia and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a promising treatment in previous studies, but the clinical outcomes of T-ALL patients with haplo HCT whether combined with UCB remain unclear. Between 2012 and 2022, a total of 281 T-ALL patients including 190 with UCB (haplo-cord HCT group) and 91 without UCB (haplo HCT group) in

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the clinical utility of diverse aneuploid circulating tumor cell (CTC) subtypes and particularly CTC-associated white blood cell (CTC-WBC) clusters in predicting treatment response, prognosis and real-time monitoring disease progression in advanced driver gene-negative non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 74 eligible patients were prospectively enrolled and serial blood samples were collected at pre-treatment(t0), after two cycles of therapy (t1) and at post-four-to-six treatment cycles (t2). Co-detection of diverse

Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) have been increasingly used in the matched unrelated donor (MUD) transplant setting, but the impact of CD34(+) cell dose on outcomes in this setting have not been well characterized. We analyzed 181 consecutive patients who underwent MUD-PBSC transplantation at the City of Hope between August 2000 to December 2004. Patients were conditioned with either full-intensity regimen or reduced-intensity regimen. There was a significant inverse relationship between higher CD34(+) cell dose and faster neutrophil engraftment (r = -0.16, P = .035). By univariate analysis

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a complication that can develop after either solid-organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). T-cell PTLD is a rare disorder, especially following autologous HSCT. Here we report a case of T-cell PTLD which occurred after autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) for relapsed angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AILT). Three months after the transplant, the patient developed fever with elevated plasma Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-PCR values. The patient subsequently developed pneumonitis, hepatomegaly and marke

We describe a case of immunological rejection occurring twice after cord blood transplantation (CBT) for mixed phenotype blast phase chronic myeloid leukemia that was successfully salvaged by haploidentical peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (haplo-PBSCT) with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PT-Cy). Pre-engraftment immune reaction (PIR) and subsequent hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), likely due to HLA mismatch in the graft-versus-host (GVH) direction, lead to poor graft function (PGF) and graft failure (GF). This case highlights the pathophysiology of PIR, HLH, PGF, and GF,

Autologous peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) transplantation is a standard treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), Hodgkin lymphoma and various subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Cryopreservation of hematopoietic stem cells is standard practice that allows time for delivery of conditioning regimen prior to cell infusion. The aim of this Worldwide Network for Blood & Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) work was to assess existing evidence on non-cryopreserved autologous transplants through a systematic review/meta-analysis, to study feasibility and safety of this approach. We searched PubMed, Web of Scien
