Overvaluation of shape/weight at posttreatment predicts relapse at 12-month follow-up after successful behaviorally-based treatment of binge-eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether overvaluation of shape/weight at the end of treatment prospectively predicts relapse at 12-month follow-up in patients with binge-eating disorder (BED). METHOD: Participants were 129 patients with BED who achieved abstinence from binge eating after 6 months of behaviorally-based weight-loss treatments in a clinical trial. Independent assessments conducted at posttreatment and at 12-month follow-up included the Eating Disorder Examination interview, the Beck Depression Inventory, and weight measurements. RESULTS: Of the 129 participants who attained abstinence from

Phase angle (PhA) in overweight and obesity: evidence of applicability from diagnosis to weight changes in obesity treatment.

Phase angle (PhA) is a recently proposed marker of nutritional status in many clinical conditions. Its use in patients with obesity presents different critical concerns due to the higher variability of the two measured parameters (resistance, R, and reactance, Xc) that contribute to the determination of PhA. Controversial is the relation between PhA and BMI that might vary with graded levels of obesity due to the variation in fat and free fat mass. Obesity is frequently associated with metabolic, hepatic, cardiovascular and kidney diseases that introduce variations in PhA values, in relation t

Cortisol decreases 2[125I]iodomelatonin binding sites in the duck thymus.

The immunosuppressive effect of chronic glucocorticoid treatment on 2[125I]iodomelatonin binding in the duck thymus was studied. Two-week-old ducks were injected intraperitoneally with either 1 mg of cortisol per day (experimental group) or an equivalent volume of vehicle (control group) in the middle of the light period for 7 days. 2[125I]Iodomelatonin binding assays were performed on thymic membranes. Cortisol injection reduced the body weight gain, size of the bursa of Fabricius and absolute weights of the primary lymphoid organs but had no effect on the spleen weights. The relative weights

Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Mercuric Chloride (CAS No. 7487-94-7) in F344 Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Gavage Studies).

Mercuric chloride is an inorganic compound that has been used in agriculture as a fungicide, in medicine as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant, and in chemistry as an intermediate in the production of other mercury compounds. The widespread use of mercury has resulted in increased levels of mercury in rivers and lakes. Mercuric chloride was evaluated in toxicity and carcinogenicity studies because of its extensive use and its occurrence as an environmental pollutant, and because of the lack of adequate long-term rodent studies. Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies were conducted by adminis

Clinical Efficacy of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-analysis.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have been approved to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which have been considered at the same treatment pattern point as basal insulin (BI). Thus, comprehensively comparing these drugs is conducive to informing the treatment decisions. In this context, this work was developed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of GLP-1 RAs by comparing them with basal insulin. GLP-1 RAs were compared with basal insulin in adults with T2DM with inadequate oral anti-hyperglycemic drug control by searching related literature from MEDLINE, EMBAS

Statistical methods for analyzing change over time of continuous outcomes in observational health studies: a scoping review of suggested approaches.

BACKGROUND: Analyses of within-person change in continuous outcomes are widely used in longitudinal observational health research. However, modeling change presents challenges, particularly regarding questions about when adjustment for baseline outcome values is indicated and how to deal with regression to the mean (RTM) and measurement error (ME). Despite extensive methodological debate, it remains unclear how these issues are addressed in applied studies and what analytical strategies have been proposed to mitigate related biases. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of methodological stu

Baseline Serum Biomarkers Predict Response to a Weight Loss Intervention in Older Adults with Obesity: A Pilot Study.

Caloric restriction and aerobic and resistance exercise are safe and effective lifestyle interventions for achieving weight loss in the obese older population (>65 years) and may improve physical function and quality of life. However, individual responses are heterogeneous. Our goal was to explore the use of untargeted metabolomics to identify metabolic phenotypes associated with achieving weight loss after a multi-component weight loss intervention. Forty-two older adults with obesity (body mass index, BMI, ≥30 kg/m2) participated in a six-month telehealth-based weight loss intervention. Each

Ginsenoside Rb1 downregulates proinflammatory cytokines expression via the Tlr2/Tlr4 signaling pathway in mice with experimental autoimmune myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune myocarditis is characterized by localized or diffuse inflammation of the myocardium due to immune dysfunction. A significant bioactive component of ginseng, ginsenoside, is used in the treatment of cancer, immune disorders, and diabetes. Among the various ginsenosides, ginsenoside Rb1 stands out for its antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and autophagy-modulating effects. We expect the protective role of ginsenoside Rb1 in a MyHC-α614-629-induced experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM) mouse model. METHODS: Forty-eight Balb/c mice were randomly

Effects of different resistance loads during resisted sprint running on internal stresses of the ankle joint: a finite element analysis.

This study examined how three resistance loads (10%, 20%, and 30% of body weight) affect ankle bone stress during sprint running. Thirty elite male sprinters performed trials, and kinematic, kinetic, and finite‑element analyses were conducted. With increasing load, peak dorsiflexion angle and moments rose, while peak inversion angle fell. The 30% load produced the highest stress in the tibia, talus, and second/third metatarsals, with concentration in the metatarsal shafts. The 20% load generally yielded lower stress than both 10% and 30% conditions. Overall, the 30% load increased local bone s

Neurotoxic and some systemic effects of cadmium oxide nanoparticles following their subchronic intranasal administration to rats: experimental data analysis.

Industrial emissions of cadmium, which is used in various industries, and formation of cadmium nanoparticles during high-temperature technological processes aggravate the problem of chemical pollution. Insufficient understanding of the toxic impact of cadmium nanoparticles, coupled with the serious multisystem toxicity of this metal, necessitate expansion of knowledge about their potential toxic effects. We assessed the response of female outbred albino rats to subchronic exposure to cadmium oxide nanoparticles (CdO NPs) administered intranasally at the concentration of 0.5 mg/mL thrice a week

Exploring Cordycepin as a Neuroprotective Agent in Huntington's Disease: In Vitro and In Vivo Insights.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a challenging neurodegenerative disorder linked to Huntingtin (HTT) gene mutation, lacking an effective cure despite numerous therapeutic attempts. Cordyceps sinensis, recognized for its health benefits, particularly its constituent cordycepin, exhibits neuroprotective effects in various neurodegenerative diseases. However, the neuroprotective potential of cordycepin in HD remains insufficiently explored. In this study, in vitro experiments using HD cell models demonstrate that cordycepin treatment enhances cell survival, slightly diminishes mutant HTT aggregates,

Metabolic Alterations in Patients with Pheochromocytoma.

Metabolic alterations in patients with hormonally active pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL) have been described early on in the literature. The initial findings were related to disturbed glucose homeostasis and lipolysis activation, as well as elevated metabolic rates in affected patients. Similarly, from early autopsy reports, the presence of brown adipose tissue had been noted in PPGL patients. In more recent years, changes in body weight, fat mass and distribution have been analyzed in more detail in addition to activity of brown adipose tissue based on functional imaging techniques. Ove

[Giant cell arteritis of the vertebrobasilar system, posterior ischemia and palsy of the third nerve. Report of one case].

Giant cell arteritis is the most common vasculitis in patients aged over 50 years. We report an 89-year-old woman with significant weight loss and persistent frontal-occipital headaches lasting two months. The neurological examination at admission identified a decrease in visual acuity of the left eye, paralysis of the third cranial nerve of the right eye and alterations of body motility without objective signs of damage of the motor or sensitive pathways. Magnetic resonance imaging showed changes of the temporal artery wall and in both vertebral arteries, as well as bilateral cerebellar and o

Abnormal layering of muscularis propria as a cause of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction: A case report and literature review.

Visceral myopathy is one of the causes of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Most cases pathologically reveal degenerative changes of myocytes or muscularis propia atrophy and fibrosis. Abnormal layering of muscularis propria is extremely rare. We report a case of a 9-mo-old Thai male baby who presented with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Histologic findings showed abnormal layering of small intestinal muscularis propria with an additional oblique layer and aberrant muscularization in serosa. The patient also had a short small bowel without malrotation, brachydactyly, and absence o

Ligands for FKBP12 increase Ca2+ influx and protein synthesis to improve skeletal muscle function.

Rapamycin at high doses (2-10 mg/kg body weight) inhibits mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) and protein synthesis in mice. In contrast, low doses of rapamycin (10 μg/kg) increase mTORC1 activity and protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. Similar changes are found with SLF (synthetic ligand for FKBP12, which does not inhibit mTORC1) and in mice with a skeletal muscle-specific FKBP12 deficiency. These interventions also increase Ca(2+) influx to enhance refilling of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) stores, slow muscle fatigue, and increase running endurance without negatively impactin

Evaluation of endocarditis caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus developing nonsusceptibility to daptomycin.

We examined sequential methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates from a patient with mitral valve endocarditis recovered during persistent bacteremia on standard therapy and relapse after treatment with daptomycin. An isolate obtained after 5 days of antimicrobial therapy, but before exposure to daptomycin, showed subtle physiological changes in response to daptomycin, with significant regrowth in the daptomycin killing assay compared to the treatment-naive strain. Once daptomycin was started, the population became more heterogeneous and tested as nonsusceptible. These organisms w

Anorexigenic action of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) in the goldfish: feeding-induced changes in the expression of mRNAs for PACAP and its receptors in the brain, and locomotor response to central injection.

Our recent research has indicated that intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) suppresses food intake in the goldfish. We therefore examined feeding- and fasting-induced changes in the expression of mRNAs for PACAP and its receptors in the goldfish brain, and the effect of ICV administration of synthetic PACAP on locomotor activity in the goldfish. Semiquantitative analysis revealed that the expression of mRNAs for PACAP and the PAC1 receptor was significantly increased by excessive feeding (daily food supply at >or=5% of the b
