The authors report their results after arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MP) performed in 50 cases including 18 rheumatoid feet, 18 major hallux valgus deformities and 14 recurrent deformities. Preparation of the bone ends for arthrodesis was achieved using convex and concave drills and fixation was done with an axial screw. The patients were evaluated after an average of 12 months, using Kitaoka's score. Eighty per cent were very satisfied, 16% were satisfied and 4% were dissatisfied. Ninety six percent reported no pain over the MP joint of the hallux, and none complained of

The surgical bone drilling process is unavoidable in orthopedic, traumatological and dental applications for screw, plate and implant placement procedures. The mechanical and thermal effects generated during this process have a direct impact on both surgical success and post-operative recovery. The high axial forces, torque, and local temperature increases that occur during drilling can lead to serious clinical complications such as microcrack formation, thermal necrosis, implant loosening, and delayed bone healing. Therefore, optimizing the cutting tool geometry in bone drilling processes is

INTRODUCTION: Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are stress-type insufficiency fractures classically associated with long-term bisphosphonate therapy in adults. Reports of AFFs in pediatric patients are limited primarily to osteogenesis imperfecta or other monogenic bone disorders following prolonged exposure. We report the first case of an AFF occurring after zoledronic acid administration in a child with ACTG2 gene mutation-related intestinal failure and severe metabolic bone disease.
CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old male with ACTG2-related intestinal failure, total parenteral nutrition dependence

PURPOSE: The dynamic hip screw (DHS) is widely used for fixing intertrochanteric femur fractures. A porous bionic DHS was developed recently to avoid the stress concentration and risk of post-operative complications associated with titanium alloy DHSs. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of traditional titanium alloy, bionic titanium alloy, and bionic magnesium alloy DHS fixation for treatment of intertrochanteric fractures using finite element analysis.
METHODS: A three-dimensional model of the proximal femur was established by human computed tomography images. An intertroch

Injectable bone cements have been well characterized and studied in non-load bearing bone fixation and bone screw augmentation applications. Current calcium phosphate cement or poly(methyl methacrylate) cement have drawbacks like low mechanical strength and in situ exothermic properties. This leads especially in patients with osteoporosis to worsening contact between implant and bone and can finally lead to implant failure. To improve these properties, a calcium silicate cement (CSC) was prepared, which additionally contained the bisphosphonate risedronate (RA) to promote osteoblast function.

In the literature has been demonstrated that when an implant is placed in the oral environment, changes in peri-implant hard tissue level may occur. Several clinical procedures have been advocated to clinically minimize this bone resorption. However, minimal attention was paid to the soft- and hard-tissue abutment interaction. The present clinical preliminary study is intended to radiologically analyze the effect of glow-discharged abutments on hard tissue level changes after 18 months of prosthetic loading. Five patients needing an implant supported restoration in the anterior maxillary area

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, characterised by decreased bone mass and degradation of bone tissue, poses a major global health concern, particularly for the ageing population. The traditional fixation techniques often fail in osteoporotic bones due to their diminished density and strength. Technological advancements in orthopaedic implants, specifically nails, plates, and external fixators, have emerged to address these challenges.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Improvements in implant design focus on material properties, surface modifications, and geometric advancements. Titanium and its alloys are favo

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is used to treat a variety of foot pathologies. Numerous methods of internal fixation and bone end preparation have been reported. In an effort to bring together the best features of the various internal fixation devices, a low-profile contoured titanium plate (LPCT) using a compression screw was designed to be used with a ball-and-socket bone end preparation. A prospective study was carried out to determine the efficacy of this technique.
METHODS: First MTPJ arthrodesis using an LPCT was done in 12 patients (10 women and t

Three patients with compound injuries of the lower extremities were treated with pedicle fibular grafts and a free muscle flap concomitantly. There were 1 female and 2 male patients, all of whom sustained high-energy trauma in a motor vehicle accident. The bone defect of the tibia ranged from 8 to 12 cm. The size of the soft-tissue defect ranged from 24 x 15 cm to 28 x 15 cm. All patients underwent preoperative angiography to ensure the patency of the peroneal artery and to avoid its use by risking viability of the leg. All patients were treated with an antegrade-flow pedicle fibular graft. Th

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To minimize notching problem associated with reversed prostheses, inferior positioning of base plate is recommended. This reduces the risk of notching, but does not eliminate it completely. Both polyethylene/PE-induced osteolysis and implant-to-bone or implant-to-implant contact may still occur, contributing to the risk of screw-breakage and resulting long-term failure. Therefore, the stability and integration of a newly developed base plate without inferior screw and inversion of bearing materials was investigated.

INTRODUCTION: Flexor digitorum longus transfer and medial displacement calcaneal osteotomy have shown favourable results in the treatment of adult acquired flat foot deformity stage 2. Little is known about the resorbable interference screw for tendon fixation and postoperative patient satisfaction though. Moreover possible changes of radiographic parameters at final follow-up, possible implant-associated complications and differences concerning clinical results at final follow-up to other studies using bone tunnel techniques for fixation of the FDL tendon were investigated.
