This article summarizes a series of recent studies that broaden the criteria for sexual dimorphism in adult mouse submandibular gland. From these observations, a hypothesis is presented, suggesting that the gross histological differences that are characteristic of adult sexual dimorphism in the gland secondarily result from differences in the activities of three fundamental cellular processes, that is, rates of cell proliferation, cell sizes, and ongoing patterns of differentiation.

An imbalance in immunoregulatory cells might explain the increase in autoimmune phenomena associated with hyposplenism. Using the monoclonal antibodies OKT3, OKT4 and OKT8 to identify T-lymphocyte subsets, we have studied 19 patients with treated coeliac disease, 9 of whom had hyposplenism, 10 splenectomized subjects, 10 gastrointestinal control patients and 10 normal subjects. Tumour metastasis in BCG-pretreated mice was studied using a methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma in C3H/He mice. When tumour cells were injected into the BCG-primed site, distant metastasis occurred in the lungs and the popliteal lymph node, through this tumour did not metastasize in normal mice. In this report, we describe a method for the quantitative determination of carbon dioxide production rates of mammalian cells. Based upon existing methods of isolating fetal porcine islet tissue, a simple, reliable procedure was developed for the preparation of porcine neonatal islet cell aggregates with a reproducible and defined cellular composition. In order to monitor the kinetics of Langerhans cells in the afferent lymph during contact dermatitis, a superficial peripheral lymph vessel draining the skin of the upper and medial part of the foot was cannulated by means of microsurgery on the lower leg of four healthy volunteers.
