Traumatic life events, polyvictimization, and externalizing symptoms in children with IDD and mental health problems.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aims to examine the rates of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and polyvictimization, as well as interrelationships among PTE types in children and youth with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) and co-occurring mental health issues. It also examines the association between polyvictimization (experiencing three or more PTEs) and externalizing symptoms, controlling for IDD severity, sex and age. METHOD: The study utilized archival data collected from 2012 to 2020 by trained assessors (e.g., nurses, social workers, psychologists) at intake into clinical m

Slowing late infantile Batten disease by direct brain parenchymal administration of a rh.10 adeno-associated virus expressing CLN2.

Late infantile Batten disease (CLN2 disease) is an autosomal recessive, neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the CLN2 gene encoding tripeptidyl peptidase 1 (TPP1). We tested intraparenchymal delivery of AAVrh.10hCLN2, a nonhuman serotype rh.10 adeno-associated virus vector encoding human CLN2, in a nonrandomized trial consisting of two arms assessed over 18 months: AAVrh.10hCLN2-treated cohort of 8 children with mild to moderate disease and an untreated, Weill Cornell natural history cohort consisting of 12 children. The treated cohort was also compared to an untr

Is there an effect of intranasal insulin on development and behaviour in Phelan-McDermid syndrome? A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) or 22q13.3 deletion syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder with at least 60 children and 35 adults diagnosed in the Netherlands. Clinical features are moderate to severe intellectual disability and behavioural problems in the autism spectrum. Other researchers had observed a beneficial effect of intranasal insulin on development and behaviour in a pilot study in six children with PMS. To validate this effect, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial using a stepped-wedge design. From March 2013 to June 2015, 25 children a

Intervention and the hearing-impaired child--an evaluation of outcome.

The investigation was performed in order to evaluate the outcome of intervention in preschool age. The material comprises a cohort of 138 children, 76 boys and 62 girls, born during 1970-1980, living in the Copenhagen County at the time of data collection (1987), all suffering from predominantly congenital/early acquired hearing disability (i.e. hearing level greater than or equal to 35 dB HL for the average of 0.5-4 kHz on the better hearing ear). The type of school attended is used as a measure for outcome of preschool intervention. It was demonstrated that 49% attended normal class (speech)

Comparative Study of Functional and Radiological Outcomes of Antegrade Versus Retrograde Titanium Elastic Nailing for Pediatric Ulnar Diaphyseal Fractures.

Background Pediatric forearm fractures account for approximately 40% of childhood skeletal injuries, with ulnar fractures being particularly prevalent. Titanium Elastic Nailing (TEN) offers an effective minimally invasive option for these injuries; however, the optimal nail entry point - antegrade (olecranon) versus retrograde (distal ulna) - remains debated. This study compared functional and radiological outcomes, complication profiles, and implant-related morbidity between the two approaches. Methods A retrospective comparative study was conducted from May 2023 to May 2025 at the R.L. Jalap

Nature and extent of hearing loss in HIV-infected children: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has had a major impact on life expectancy from HIV as many people now live with it as a chronic disease. Chronic HIV has been associated with a range of comorbid disabilities and health conditions, one of which is hearing loss. Undiagnosed and untreated hearing loss, particularly in children, has been linked to poorer spoken language skills, with subsequent effects on academic performance. METHODS: This systematic scoping review aimed to summarize the available peer-reviewed literature on hearing loss in HIV-infected children, specifically to describ
