Platynosomum fastosum-induced chronic intrahepatic cholangitis and Spirometra spp. infections in feral cats from Grand Cayman.

The occurrence of platynosomiasis and intestinal sparganosis is described in feral cats from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Spirometra spp. was observed within the intestine of 18.18% (10/55) of cats; 1.18% (1/55) of cats demonstrated gross and histological manifestation of parasitism by Platynosomum fastosum, but 14.5% (8/55) of cats had the characteristic pathological manifestations of P. fastosum-induced intrahepatic cholangitis without the concomitant presence of the intraductal trematode. Combined parasitism (Spirometra spp. and P. fastosum) was observed in 9.09% (5/55) of feral cats. Sign

Cytodiagnosis of cutaneous histoplasmosis in HIV positive patient initially presenting with multiple umbilicated disseminated skin nodules.

Histoplasmosis is usually an opportunistic fungal infection in patients with defective cell mediated immunity, and has been considered as one of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) defining illness. However, cutaneous involvement in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients is less common, and very rarely can be the initial presenting symptom for the diagnosis of AIDS. We present here an unusual case of multiple diffuse cutaneous nodular lesions predominantly in face, trunk, and upper extremities diagnosed initially on aspiration cytology as histoplasmosis. Subsequent sero

IL-22 production is regulated by IL-23 during Listeria monocytogenes infection but is not required for bacterial clearance or tissue protection.

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is a gram-positive bacterium that is a common contaminant of processed meats and dairy products. In humans, ingestion of LM can result in intracellular infection of the spleen and liver, which can ultimately lead to septicemia, meningitis, and spontaneous abortion. Interleukin (IL)-23 is a cytokine that regulates innate and adaptive immune responses by inducing the production of IL-17A, IL-17F, and IL-22. We have recently demonstrated that the IL-23/IL-17 axis is required for optimal recruitment of neutrophils to the liver, but not the spleen, during LM infection. F

Concurrent acanthamoeba and Fusarium keratitis with silicone hydrogel contact lens use.

PURPOSE: To report a case of simultaneous Acanthamoeba and Fusarium keratitis associated with no-rub multipurpose contact lens solution and silicone hydrogel contact lens use. METHOD: Observational case report. RESULTS: A 39-year-old woman was referred for worsening of a presumed bacterial corneal ulcer in the setting of silicone hydrogellens wear with occasional overnight wear, no-rub multipurpose contact lens solution use, and combined topical antibiotic/corticosteroid treatment. Initial corneal scrapings and culture confirmed Acanthamoeba and Fusarium solani, corroborated by in vivo confo

Amplicon-based sequencing as a diagnostic tool for severe pneumonia in the ICU.

The microbiological diagnosis of severe pneumonia in intensive care unit (ICU) patients remains challenging. We investigated whether amplico … limitations in bacterial identification, pathogens not reported by SOC were detected in 8 samples (coinfections, bacterial superinfections from viral pneumonia). ITS identification was reliable, and semiquantification helped distinguish P. jirovecii infection and colonization. The correlation between galactomannan and ITS was good. While 16S rRNA sequencing …

Assessing antimicrobial resistance in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 isolates from human clinical cases in the United States, 2010-2021.

AIMS: To characterize antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns and temporal trends among Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (STEC O1 … tant strains could be foodborne, direct animal contact, the environment, or treatment for bacterial coinfections. The increase in the prevalence of AMR among STEC O157 strains in humans warrants investigation into the factors driving the emergence of resistant isolates. These findings call for an "One Health" approach for antimicrobial stewardship to mitigate …

Systematic review of triploidy among parasitic worms.

Parasitic worms have significant medical, veterinary and economic importance. Numerous studies have therefore addressed various aspects of parasitic worms' biology. In contrast, the ploidy of parasitic worms remains comparatively understudied, despite a few known triploid species. Polyploidy is known to have phenotypic and genetic effects in animals, which can lead to changes at the evolutionary scale. The evolutionary consequences of polyploidy have been addressed in host-parasite systems; however, most studies have focused on the host perspective, with relatively few studies examining the pa

Tuberculosis in Sudan: A Comprehensive Narrative Review of Epidemiological Trends, Diagnosis, Drug Resistance, Challenges, and Data Gaps.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of tuberculosis (TB) in Sudan, focusing on prevalence, d … istant TB was more prevalent in Khartoum (41.5%) than Kassala (21.4%). Only 23 studies examined HIV coinfections. TB notifications declined from 209 per 100,000 in 2009 to 10 per 100,000 in 2019 but increased to 50 per 100,000 after the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were lacking for Sudan's western states. Because of the Sudan war, in 2024, 14,310 cases were report …

A Study of Ctenodactylina tunetae (Pharyngodonidae) and Hilgertia hilgerti (Oxyuridae), Intestinal Parasites of Ctenodactylus gundi in Tunisia, Using Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy.

Due to limited knowledge regarding the diversity of parasitic helminths of the common gundi (Ctenodactylus gundi), we have undertaken a helminthological survey of the gundi in Southern Tunisia. A total of 125 gundis were analysed with the main objective of providing more complete descriptions of their parasitic helminths. Among them, two nematodes, namely Ctenodactylina tunetae Bernard, 1969 (Pharyngodonidae) and Hilgertia hilgerti (Seurat, 1915) (Oxyuridae), were recovered from the large intestine and caecum. Morphological and morphometric analyses of both species were carried out using light

Clinical Severity and Surgical Burden in Drug Use-Associated Infective Endocarditis: A Six-Year Cohort Study.

Drug use-associated infective endocarditis (DUA-IE) is an increasingly important clinical problem that affects younger patients and poses substantial diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical challenges. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults with definite infective endocarditis treated at a tertiary referral center between 2017 and 2022, comparing patients with DUA-IE to those with non-drug use-associated infective endocarditis. Of the 189 patients, 43 (22.8%) had DUA-IE. These patients were significantly younger and had higher rates of HIV and hepatitis C coinfections. Staphylococcu…

Gastrointestinal parasites circulating in wild boars from central Italy and molecular characterization of Balantioides coli, Blastocystis sp. and Enterocytozoon bieneusi.

The growing abundance and geographic spread of wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Europe have heightened concerns about their contribution to the transmission of parasites of zoonotic and veterinary importance. This study investigated the occurrence and zoonotic potential of gastrointestinal parasites in 46 wild boars sampled during the 2023 hunting season in Italy. Copromicroscopic analyses revealed that 47.8% of animals were positive for at least one parasite taxon, with frequent coinfections. Thirteen taxa were identified by microscopy, including protozoans (Entamoeba coli, Iodamoeba but…
