OBJECTIVE: Progesterone (PG) and its target, progesterone receptor (PGR), are important regulators in inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to investigate the specific role of PG in periodontitis and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms involving PGR.
METHODS: Women with periodontitis, including 250 with PG deficiency, 250 with PG supplementation, and 245 controls (normal PG) were enrolled. The distance between the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar bone crest (CEJ-ABC) and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by cone beam computed tomography, and the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage chronic diseases, especially those undergoing hemodialysis (HD), often experience mineral bone disease (MBD), leading to hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH). Vitamin D deficiency and metabolism disorders are also common, resulting from impaired conversion of 25(OH)D3 to its active form, 1,25(OH)2D3, and reduced inactivation to 24,25(OH)2D3. This study aimed to assess the levels of 25(OH)D2, 25(OH)D3, 24,25(OH)2D3, 3-epi-25(OH)D3, and the vitamin D metabolism ratio (VMR) in patients with maintenance HD.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common diseases worldwide with significant morbidity and mortality. HbA1c remains one of the most important methods for diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. Since HbA1c is a reflection of the glucose attached to red blood cells, factors affecting hemoglobin and red blood cells' half-life can influence HbA1c measurements.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effect of different types of anemia including iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell anemia, β -thalassemia trait, and megaloblastic anemia on HbA1c levels in a tertiary hospital over

Ribonucleotides frequently contaminate DNA and, if not removed, cause genomic instability. Consequently, all organisms are equipped with RNase H enzymes to remove RNA-DNA hybrids (RDHs). Escherichia coli lacking RNase HI (rnhA) and RNase HII (rnhB) enzymes, the ∆rnhA ∆rnhB double mutant, accumulates RDHs in its DNA. These RDHs can convert into RNA-containing DNA lesions (R-lesions) of unclear nature that compromise genomic stability. The ∆rnhAB double mutant has severe phenotypes, like growth inhibition, replication stress, sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, SOS induction, increased chromos

Objective: Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in children are global public health problems. However, few studies have focused on vitamin D status in healthy preschool children, especially in Asia. This study aimed to investigate vitamin D status and host-related factors in healthy preschool children in Hangzhou to analyze the impact of low vitamin D levels (<30 ng/mL) on health outcomes (obesity, early childhood caries, and respiratory tract infections). Methods: A total of 1,510 healthy children aged 24-72 months from 15 kindergartens in Hangzhou were included. Data on the children's gen

Scientific interest in possible extraskeletal effects of vitamin D first appeared in the 1930s soon after the structure of vitamin D was characterized, and increased in the 1980s with the development of assays of 25-hydroxyvitamin D status as a marker of vitamin D status, which in observational epidemiological studies was shown to be inversely associated with many nonskeletal diseases. This resulted in the start of seven large randomized controlled trials (n > 2000 participants in each) of vitamin D supplementation giving higher doses than previously used. The intervention periods in these tri

Vitamin D is a fat soluble secosteroid that is primarily synthesized in the skin upon exposure to Ultraviolet B (UVB) sun rays. Vitamin D is essential for the growth and development of bones and helps in reducing inflammation by strengthening muscles and the immune system. Despite the endless supply of sunlight in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries which includes United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, Vitamin D deficiency in the (GCC) general population at various age groups remains alarmingly high. In parallel runs the increasing prevalence of acute an

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Congenital myasthenia syndromes are clinically and genetically heterogeneous but treatable conditions. Careful selection of drug therapy is paramount as the same drug can be effective, ineffective, and even harmful in different congenital myasthenia syndromes. The purpose of this article is to review current treatment options for these conditions.
RECENT FINDINGS: Next-generation sequencing has accelerated the discovery of new genes and facilitated the description of novel congenital myasthenic syndromes. Retrospective therapy data from these newly identified syndromes has

Proteoglycans of the arterial wall play a critical role in vascular integrity and the development of atherosclerosis owing to their ability to organize extracellular matrix molecules and to bind and retain atherogenic apolipoprotein (apo)-B containing lipoproteins. Prior studies have suggested a role for biglycan in aneurysms and in atherosclerosis. Angiotensin II (angII) infusions into mice have been shown to induce abdominal aortic aneurysm development, increase vascular biglycan content, increase arterial retention of lipoproteins, and accelerate atherosclerosis. The goal of this study was

In lysosomal glycosphingolipid storage disorders, marked elevations in corresponding glycosphingoid bases (lyso-glycosphingolipids) have been reported, such as galactosylsphingosine in Krabbe disease, glucosylsphingosine in Gaucher disease and globotriaosylsphingosine in Fabry disease. Using LC–MS/MS, we comparatively investigated the occurrence of abnormal lyso-glycosphingolipids in tissues and plasma of mice with deficiencies in lysosomal α-galactosidase A, glucocerebrosidase and galactocerebrosidase. The nature and specificity of lyso-glycosphingolipid abnormalities are reported and compare

Although bacterial meningitis is a rare presentation of a congenital immunodeficiency, invasive meningococcal disease is classically associated with complement deficiencies. We report a patient from a consanguineous kindred presenting with an invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B meningococcus that revealed an underlying C5 deficiency caused by a novel mutation in the C5 gene.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder marked by characteristic inflammation of the small joints in addition to diverse systemic manifestations. Vitamin D has immunomodulatory properties, and its deficiency has a significant role in the clinical course of RA. The present research was conducted to study the correlation between serum vitamin D levels and disease activity scores in RA patients.
METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out on a sample of 50 patients presenting with RA. Disease activity was measured using Modified Disease Activity Score (DAS) c

Metachromatic leukodystrophy is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of arylsulfatase A, causing the storage of the sphingolipid sulfatide. The disease is characterized by a progressive demyelination, which results in severe, finally lethal, neurologic symptoms. Genetically, the disease is heterogeneous, most mutant alleles are private, and only three have a frequency worth mentioning. An arylsulfatase A-deficient knockout mouse displays some of the disease features seen in patients but does not show the widespread demyelination characteristic of the disease. Nevertheless, thi

Interleukin-12 RB1 (IL12RB1) deficiency falls under the Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease. It is a rare genetic disease with autosomal recessive inheritance. It is characterized by recurrent infections with otherwise weak bacteria, such as mycobacteria and Salmonella. Often, when encountering a maculopapular eruption, a drug-related cause comes to mind. However, we report a case of IL12RB1 deficiency presenting with a maculopapular eruption, proven by a skin biopsy to be leukocytoclastic vasculitis. The patient was given antibiotics, which improved her skin lesions. Vasculitis

The fortuitous detection of an increased activated cephalin clotting time is often dependent on defects of the blood-clotting factors synthesized by the liver, haemophilia or von Willebrand's disease, circulating anticoagulants or specific deficiencies of various factors necessary for blood-clotting mechanisms. Much more rarely, it may be due to an isolated Hageman factor defect. This deficiency does not lead to an increased bleeding tendency and surgery has proved surprisingly uneventful. On the other hand, thromboembolic events may appear. Being and inherited disease with autosomal recessive

Some groups of people with high risk of ischemic heart disease have low lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase activity in plasma and vice versa. Because we hypothesized a relationship between inadequate copper nutriture and the risk of ischemic heart disease, we measured plasma lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase in copper deficient male Sprague-Dawley rats. Deficiency was verified by the presence of anemia, hypercholesterolemia and low copper concentrations in kidney and skeletal muscle. Three experiments showed a significant decrease (22-32% reduction) in enzyme activity in deficiency. Copp

The association of copper with cardiovascular disease and a possible involvement of copper in the metabolism of cholesterol prompted the study on hypercholesterolemia mediated by copper deficiency. Copper deficient rats were found to exhibit a highly significant cholesterolemia (P less than 0.001), and plasma cholesterol showed a significant correlation with hepatic copper concentration (P less than 0.03). Two copper deficient rats died with hemothorax. The hearts of copper deficient rats were hypertrophied with large areas of hemorrhage, inflammation and focal necrosis. Prominent subendocardi
