Predicting burnout in radiology nurses: an interpretable machine learning model developed and externally validated in a multi-center study.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and externally validate an interpretable machine learning model for predicting individual burnout risk among radiology nurses, and to identify modifiable, non-linear risk thresholds to guide precision prevention. METHODS: A two-center, two-stage design was used. A development cohort (n = 219) from six tertiary hospitals in China trained an XGBoost model. An independent external validation cohort (n = 234) was collected 1.5 years later from two tertiary centers (one partially overlapping with the development sites but with entirely independent participants) to rigorously

The Profiling of 179 miRNA Expression in Serum from Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Patients and Healthy Controls.

Limb girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMDs) are a group of genetically inherited neuromuscular diseases with a very variable clinical presentation and overlapping traits. Over the last few years there has been an increasing interest in the use of non-invasive circulating biomarkers to monitor disease progression and to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic approaches. Our aim was to identify the miRNA signature with potential value for LGMD patient screening and stratification. Using miRCURY LNA miRNA qPCR Serum/Plasma Panel, we analyzed 179 miRNAs from 16 patients, divided in four pools based on

Developing and validating a novel nomogram used a competing-risks model for predicting the prognosis of primary fallopian tube carcinoma: a retrospective study based on the SEER database.

BACKGROUND: The current prognostic methods for primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) are inadequate. This study is the first to use a competing-risks model to perform an accurate analysis of the prognostic factors for PFTC cause-specific death (CSD). We used the model to established a nomogram for the 3-, 5-, and 8-year CSD rates based on the identified prognostic factors. METHODS: This study selected 1,924 patients from the SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) database. The cumulative incidence function (CIF) was used in univariate analyses, and Gray's test was used to determ

Differentiation between Candida dubliniensis and Candida albicans by fatty acid methyl ester analysis using gas-liquid chromatography.

Candida dubliniensis is often found in mixed culture with C. albicans, but its recognition is hampered as the color of its colonies in primary culture on CHROMagar Candida varies. Furthermore, definite identification of C. dubliniensis is difficult to achieve, time-consuming, and expensive. Therefore, a method to discriminate between these two closely related yeast species by fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis using gas-liquid chromatography (Sherlock Microbial Identification System [MIS]; MIDI, Inc., Newark, Del.) was developed. Although the chromatograms of these two species revealed no

Causal Inference in Audiovisual Perception.

In our natural environment the senses are continuously flooded with a myriad of signals. To form a coherent representation of the world, the brain needs to integrate sensory signals arising from a common cause and segregate signals coming from separate causes. An unresolved question is how the brain solves this binding or causal inference problem and determines the causal structure of the sensory signals. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study human observers (female and male) were presented with synchronous auditory and visual signals at the same location (i.e., common cau

Frequency Shifts and Depth Dependence of Premotor Beta Band Activity during Perceptual Decision-Making.

Neural activity in the premotor and motor cortices shows prominent structure in the beta frequency range (13-30 Hz). Currently, the behavioral relevance of this beta band activity (BBA) is debated. The underlying source of motor BBA and how it changes as a function of cortical depth are also not completely understood. Here, we addressed these unresolved questions by investigating BBA recorded using laminar electrodes in the dorsal premotor cortex of 2 male rhesus macaques performing a visual reaction time (RT) reach discrimination task. We observed robust BBA before and after the onset of the

Breast cancer risk prediction in women aged 35-50 years: impact of including sex hormone concentrations in the Gail model.

BACKGROUND: Models that accurately predict risk of breast cancer are needed to help younger women make decisions about when to begin screening. Premenopausal concentrations of circulating anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a biomarker of ovarian reserve, and testosterone have been positively associated with breast cancer risk in prospective studies. We assessed whether adding AMH and/or testosterone to the Gail model improves its prediction performance for women aged 35-50. METHODS: In a nested case-control study including ten prospective cohorts (1762 invasive cases/1890 matched controls) with pr

Genetic Loci and Novel Discrimination Measures Associated with Blood Pressure Variation in African Americans Living in Tallahassee.

Sequencing of the human genome and decades of genetic association and linkage studies have dramatically improved our understanding of the etiology of many diseases. However, the multiple causes of complex diseases are still not well understood, in part because genetic and sociocultural risk factors are not typically investigated concurrently. Hypertension is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and afflicts more African Americans than any other racially defined group in the US. Few genetic loci for hypertension have been replicated across populations, which may reflect population-s

Stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS: validation of a measurement scale.

BACKGROUND: Although stigmatization has long been recognized as a major obstacle to HIV prevention. The lack of a valid and reliable measurement tool for stigmatization is a major gap in the research. This study aimed to: 1) develop a scale of stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV (SAT-PLWHA-S) and 2) demonstrate its reliability and validity. METHODS: French and English-speaking experts (n = 21) from different professional communities (academics, practitioners) assessed the clarity and relevance of the proposed items. The psychometric properties of the SAT-PLWHA-S were assesse

FTIR spectroscopy of biofluids revisited: an automated approach to spectral biomarker identification.

The extraction of disease specific information from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of human body fluids demands the highest stand … ssification. Repeat validation on 21% of the dataset not included in predictor training with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classifiers and Random Forests (RFs) yielded a sensitivity of 93 ± 10% and a specificity of 46 ± 18% for bladder cancer. The low specificity can be most likely attributed to the unbalanced and small number of control samples. Using this approa …

Can massive but passive exposure to faces contribute to face recognition abilities?

Recent studies have suggested that individuation of other-race faces is more crucial for enhancing recognition performance than exposure that involves categorization of these faces to an identity-irrelevant criterion. These findings were primarily based on laboratory training protocols that dissociated exposure and individuation by using categorization tasks. However, the absence of enhanced recognition following categorization may not simulate key aspects of real-life massive exposure without individuation to other-race faces. Real-life exposure spans years of seeing a multitude of faces, und
