Effective drug candidates to obstruct the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens have become a major concern. A potent antimicrobial producer was isolated from a marine sponge designated as MSI38 and was identified as Bacillus subtilis by 16SrDNA sequencing. The active antimicrobial fraction was purified, and the metabolite was identified as n-hexadecanoic acid by spectroscopic analysis. The fish-borne pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa FP012 was found to be multidrug-resistant and poses a risk of disease to food handlers and consumers in general. The compound showed a potent bactericidal eff

A significant opportunistic pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) has evolved mechanisms of resistance to a wide variety of antimicrobials, including carbapenems. In this article, we assessed the prevalence, risk factors, antimicrobial sensitivity, and resistance mechanisms among A. baumannii in several locations in Saudi Arabia. Hospital-acquired infections caused by A. baumannii were prevalent in the country due to a variety of reasons, such as the high number of critically ill patients, the frequency of gastrointestinal colonization, and the widespread use of antimicrobial medica

The aim of this work was to evaluate the consequence of a hospitalisation period on antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from wild bird species admitted in the wildlife rescue centre of the Department of Veterinary Sciences (Turin University, Italy). Samples were collected from 121 raptors and 51 synanthropic animals, at the time of arrival as well as 5 and 10 days afterwards for a total of 372 faecal samples, and the susceptibility of E. coli strains was tested to a panel of seven antibacterials. Of the total, 109 animals (63.37 %) presented at least one sample positive for E

It is unclear whether norfloxacin predisposes to infections by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). We aimed to evaluate if patients with cirrhosis receiving norfloxacin prophylaxis at the time of the diagnosis of bacterial infections were more likely to present a multidrug-resistant isolate than those without prophylaxis. This is a cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis and bacterial infections from Argentina and Uruguay (NCT03919032) from September 2018 to December 2020. The outcome variable was a multidrug-resistant bacterial infection. We used inverse probability o

AIMS: Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Acinetobacter baumannii poses a severe threat to public health due to its ability to form biofilms and persister cells, which contributes to critical drug resistance and refractory device-associated infections. A novel strategy to alleviate such an emergency is to identify promising compounds that restore the antimicrobial susceptibility of existing antibiotics against refractory infections.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we found a significant synergy among three combinations of SPR741, clarithromycin and erythromycin with a potent antimicrobial activity ag

The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant pathogens continue to threaten our ability to combat several infections. Among them, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) poses a major threat to human health. P. aeruginosa has intrinsic resistance to many antibiotics due to the impermeability of its outer membrane and a resistance-nodulation-cell division type multidrug efflux pump system. Therefore, only limited therapeutic drugs are effective against the pathogen. To address this problem, we have recently discovered an overlooked anti- P. aeruginosa compound, 5-O-mycaminosyltylonolide (

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas is a group of ubiquitous non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria (NFGNB). Of the several species associated with humans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) can acclimate to diverse environments. The global frequency of PA infections is rising and is complicated by this organism's high intrinsic and acquired resistance to several clinically relevant antibiotics. Data on the epidemiology, levels, and trends of antimicrobial resistance of PA in clinical settings in the MENA/GCC region is scarce.
METHODS: A retrospective 12-year analysis of 56,618 non-duplicate diagnostic Pseudom

INTRODUCTION: A decrease of detection of outbreaks by multidrug-resistant bacteria in critical areas has been reduced due to COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, molecular epidemiological surveillance should be a primary tool to reveal associations not evident by classical epidemiology. The aim of this work was to demonstrate the presence of hidden outbreaks in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and to associate their possible origin.
METHODS: A population of 96 COVID-19 patients was included in the study (April to June 2020) from Hospital Juárez de México. Genetic identification and antimicrob

ABSTRACT: Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) include several serotypes that have been associated with colibacillosis in poultry and with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and newborn meningitis in humans. In this study, 57 antimicrobial-resistant E. coli from apparently healthy broiler chickens were characterized for their health and safety risks. These isolates belonged to 12 serotypes, and isolates of the same serotype were clonal based on single nucleotide variant analysis. Most of the isolates harbored plasmids; IncC and IncFIA were frequently detected. The majority of the r

The impact of contamination of water drainage ditches in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has been scarcely studied in Mexico. In this regard, 101 isolates of E. coli were obtained from water samples from a ditch in Sinaloa, during one year. The antimicrobial resistant profiles, the presence of the class 1 integron and evolutionary relationship of intI1 sequences were determined. The 47.5% of strains were resistant and 5.9% multidrug resistant (MDR) with an average multiple antibiotic resistance index value of 0.45. The highest resistance was registered with β-lactam (39.6%) an

Multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria are an increasing public health problem. One promising alternative to the development of new antibiotics is the use of antibiotic adjuvants, which would allow the continued use of FDA-approved antibiotics that have been rendered ineffective due to resistance. Herein, we report a series of dipyrrins and pyrrole derivatives designed as analogues of prodigiosin and obatoclax, several of which potentiate the activity of colistin against Klebsiella pneumoniae, with lead compounds also potentiating colistin against Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) attributes 26% of the mortality rate in hospitalized patients, and the percentage can rise to 46 in patients admitted to ICU as it is a major cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia. It has been nominated as the critical priority organism by WHO for which new therapeutic drugs are urgently required. To understand the genomic identification of different strains, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and epidemiological typing of organisms, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis provides insight to explore new epitopes to develop new drugs against the organis

OBJECTIVES: Core-genome single nucleotide variant (cgSNV) analysis represents a powerful tool for epidemiological investigations of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, cgSNV thresholds to confirm whether isolates are the same clone are not formally defined.
METHODS: We implemented hybrid whole-genome sequencing to study the genomic changes of four MDR isolates belonging to hyperepidemic sequence types (STs) during 20 propagation steps (T20) on MacConkey and CHROMID(R) ESBL plates. The following strains were analyzed: Klebsiella pneumoniae AE-2247421 (OXA-48/NDM-1-producing, ST101), K
