[The disease course in patients admitted to a rehabilitation department following spinal cord injuries].

Epidemiologic data from 109 patients admitted to hospital in the period 1/1/1980-/31/12/1984 with spinal cord injuries are presented. The mean age was 29 years, there was a preponderance of males and the most frequent cause of the spinal cord injury was road accidents. The material was compared with the epidemiologic and social data of other studies. A total of 58 patients, chiefly users of wheelchairs, were followed up on average six years after the first admission. It was thus possible to form an idea of the complications of the spinal cord injury and the effectiveness of the treatment. The

Classical bacterial diarrhea: perspectives and update--Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli, Aeromonas and Plesiomonas.

Impressive advancements in our understanding of the mechanisms of diarrhea production and of the epidemiologic importance of these "classical" bacterial enteropathogens have been accomplished, but many areas are in need of further exploration. The recent development of gene probes and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the identification of EPEC, ETEC and EIEC will enhance immeasurably the ability to carry out large scale epidemiologic studies which are still needed to clarify the global importance of these pathogens in infantile diarrhea. For some of these organisms pathogenic mechanisms

A longitudinal study of health risks associated with alcohol abuse in young navy men.

Hospital admission histories were compared for groups of alcohol abusers and controls who entered the Navy in 1970 or 1971 and who reenlisted. The histories extended over a period of 6 to 8 years. The alcohol abuse group had a significantly higher mean number of hospital admissions and days hospitalized for conditions other than alcoholism than did the controls. Differences in frequencies of illnesses between the two groups were apparent during the first year in service and continued throughout the study period. Highest rates of illness in both groups were reported for accidents, poisonings, a

Paraprofessional treatment of school phobia in a young adolescent girl.

Debbie, a 14-year-old girl, was referred one year ago to a rural mental health center by her parents, essentially due to continued refusal to attend school. It was readily apparent that the symptoms were those of a classic case of school phobia, i.e., refusal to attend school, nausea and/or vomiting on school days but not on weekends, the overprotective mother, the distraught family, and other rather predictable concomitants. Following careful professional assessment, the assignment of a paraprofessional was made (a senior elementary education major taking part in a field experience course in

Some health aspects of high-energy society.

The intensive use of inanimate energy in industrialized or high-energy society has subsidized research, development, and higher education and has brought about changes in nutrition and life-style that have led to great advances in public health and medicine. The emergence of high-energy society, however, has brought with it a new set of health problems, within which the direct effects of measurable pollution may turn out to be more easily dealt with than some of the indirect and hard-to-calculate consequences of high energy use. High-energy society is critically dependent on energy-intensive t

Association between GLM7 glycolipid metabolism index and female infertility: A cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2013-2020.

The glycolipid metabolism 7 factors (GLM7) index is a novel composite glycolipid index that includes age, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, body mass index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and insulin levels. It serves as a new indicator for predicting and diagnosing diseases. However, its relationship with infertility remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between the GLM7 index and female infertility. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2020. Three l

Discrimination Distress and Current Combustible and Non-combustible Tobacco Product Use Among US Youth, 2023.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination is the unfair treatment of people based on their identity. Youth who experience discrimination may cope with associated distress by using tobacco products, with amplified health consequences depending on the type of product. METHODS: We used data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 22 069) and derived an overall continuous measure from the 15-item Adolescent Discrimination Distress Index, as well as three continuous discrimination distress sub-indices: educational, institutional, and peer (range for each: 0-5). We defined current tobacco use as two ou

Community perception and preventive practices regarding malaria in low-endemicity regions on Indonesian Kalimantan border adjacent to high-endemicity zoonotic malaria in Malaysian Borneo.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia aspires to completely eliminate malaria by 2030. Malaria cases have fallen drastically due to the implementation of national strategic plans and policies, and the Ministry of Health has granted certification of elimination status to various areas, including Kalimantan. However, this low prevalence contrasts sharply with the continued high prevalence (18.9%, totalling 3290 cases) of Plasmodium knowlesi infections in Malaysian Borneo. Assessing the knowledge and preventive practices regarding malaria and attitudes towards zoonotic malaria within communities along the Kalima

Risk factor treatment in veteran women at risk for cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women. Aggressive management of atherosclerotic risk factors can prevent or delay the onset of CVD. Treatment of modifiable risk factors provides an important opportunity to reduce the burden of CVD in women and decrease future adverse event rates. The aims of this study were to assess current treatment of atherosclerotic risk factors in women found to be at moderate or high-risk for CVD and to examine levels of CVD knowledge and awareness among women found to be at moderate or high-risk for CVD METHODS: In a cross-secti

The role of policy in community pharmacies' response to injection-drug use: results of a nationwide Canadian survey.

The response rate to this survey reflects the salience of the topic and the professional concern about and interest in issues presented by HIV. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has presented pharmacists with one of the greatest challenges to their professional training, ethics, and practice. It further expedites a current re-examination that is occurring among community pharmacies concerning their roles in community health practices. In response to HIV there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in pharmacy policy and practices. Clearly, some community pharmacies have led the way and influenced po

Technostress and learning burnout among nursing students: The protective roles of academic self-efficacy and psychological resilience - A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The rapid integration of digital modalities within contemporary nursing curricula has exposed student cohorts to unique psychological strains, prominently manifested as technostress. While technostress is known to accelerate learning burnout, the complex boundary conditions and moderating mechanisms through which internal cognitive assets-specifically academic self-efficacy-alter or shape this negative relationship remain insufficiently quantified. OBJECTIVE: This study established a hierarchical predictive framework and moderation model to quantify the impact of technostress on l

Research progress on continuous nursing care for children after radical surgery for Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease is a common congenital gastrointestinal malformation in children, for which radical surgery remains the primary treatment modality. Postoperatively, patients are prone to complications such as Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis, defecation dysfunction, anal stenosis, and psychological or behavioral abnormalities, all of which significantly impair growth, development, and quality of life. As a critical bridge linking inpatient treatment with home-based rehabilitation, continuous nursing care has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing post-discharge outcomes, reducing compl

Patterns of CPBMI-OC and associated factors among platform workers in new forms of employment in China: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the basic medical insurance system achieving 95% coverage in China, platform workers in new forms of employment (PWNFEs) face significant challenges in maintaining continuous participation in basic medical insurance (CPBMI). This study aims to identify distinct patterns of CPBMI by occupational characteristics (CPBMI-OC) and their associated factors. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey with 641 PWNFEs in China using a structured questionnaire and employed latent class analysis (LCA) to identify patterns of CPBMI-OC. We utilized multinomial logistic regression

Annual surgeon and hospital volume of gastrectomy and gastric adenocarcinoma survival in a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It is uncertain whether centralization of gastrectomy to fewer surgeons and larger centers improves survival in gastric adenocarcinoma in Western populations. The aim of this study was to examine if higher annual surgeon or hospital volumes of gastrectomy increase gastric adenocarcinoma survival in a population-based Swedish cohort. METHODS: This study included almost all patients who underwent curatively intended gastrectomy for gastric adenocarcinoma in Sweden between 2006 and 2015 with follow-up throughout 2020. Data were collected from medical records and national registries.

Obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome in adults with Down syndrome.

KEY POINTS: Adults with Down syndrome are predisposed to obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) due to overlap between the Down syndrome phenotype and OSAHS risk factors. The prevalence of OSAHS in adults with Down syndrome is estimated at 35-42%. This is up to ten-times higher than in the general adult population.Symptoms of OSAHS, including behavioural and emotional disturbances as well as standard symptoms such as sleepiness, should be monitored as part of regular health surveillance in adults with Down syndrome. There is evidence that the use of continuous positive airway pressu
