Serotonin releasers modulate reactivity of the rat hippocampus to afferent stimulation.

Electrical stimulation of the perforant path produces a characteristic population EPSP and population spike in the dentate gyrus of the anesthetized rat. Parenteral administration of a serotonin releasing drug D-fenfluramine (FFA) caused a marked (30-100%) and highly significant increase in dentate gyrus population spike response to perforant path stimulation without affecting the slope of the population excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP). This indicates that FFA modifies granular cell excitability to afferent stimulation. The facilitatory effect of FFA was not present in rats depleted o

Direct Current Stimulation (DCS) Modulates Lipid Metabolism and Intercellular Vesicular Trafficking in SHSY-5Y Cell Line: Implications for Parkinson's Disease.

The modulation of the brain's electrical activity for therapeutic purposes has recently gained attention, supported by the promising results obtained through the non-invasive application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the treatment of neurodegenerative and neurological diseases. To optimize therapeutic efficacy, it is crucial to investigate the cellular and molecular effects of tDCS. This will help to identify important biomarkers, predict patient's response and develop personalized treatments. In this study, we applied direct current stimulation (DCS) to a neural cell li

Effects of four non-invasive stimulations on swallowing function and quality of life of stroke patients-a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a sudden neurological disorder that causes severe neurological damage mainly due to lack of oxygen to brain cells as a result of interruption of blood flow to the brain. Dysphagia is a common problem in stroke patients, interfering with diet and nutrition and possibly leading to complications. About 50-80% of stroke patients experience dysphagia in the acute phase, which may lead to serious consequences such as aspiration and pneumonia. Therefore, improving swallowing function is essential to enhance patients' quality of life (QoL). Traditional rehab methods are limited,

New method for neuromodulation against pain using minimally invasive electrodes outside the epidural space.

Chronic pain is cumbersome, difficult to treat and a growing and costly problem in modern medical care. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has proven to be an effective technique for pain mitigation in many cases. Despite being generally safe, the procedure carries increased risks for patients on anti-coagulant medication due to the catheter placement in the epidural space inside the spinal canal. Since these medical conditions are mainly prevalent in the elderly, among which chronic pain is also particularly common and problematic, a large group of patients are nowadays potentially excluded from t

Pathology influences blood pressure change following vagal stimulation in an animal intubation model.

PURPOSE: The haemodynamic response to critical care intubation is influenced by the use of sedation and relaxant drugs and the activation of the vagal reflex. It has been hypothesized that different disease states may have a contrasting effect on the cardiovascular response to vagal stimulation. Our objective was to determine whether the blood pressure response to vagal stimulation was modified by endotoxaemia or hypovolaemia. METHODS: New Zealand White rabbits were anaesthetised with urethane before tracheotomy. The exposed left Vagus nerve of randomised groups of control (n = 11), endotoxin

Ghrelin stimulates gastric motility of the guinea pig through activation of a capsaicin-sensitive neural pathway: in vivo and in vitro functional studies.

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin stimulates gastric motility in rats, mice and humans. Although ghrelin and the ghrelin receptor are known to be expressed in the guinea-pig gastrointestinal tract, the effects of ghrelin on gastric motility have not been examined. Aim of the present study was to clarify the motor-stimulating action of ghrelin in the guinea-pig stomach. METHODS: Gastric motility was measured as intraluminal pressure changes using a balloon inserted in the stomach of urethane-anaesthetized guinea pigs. The effects of ghrelin on gastric muscle contraction and [(3)H]-efflux from [(3)H]-choline

Mechanomyography reflects the changes in oxygenated hemoglobin during electrically evoked cycling in individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling has been reported to enhance muscle strength and improve muscle fatigue resistance after spinal cord injury (SCI). Despite its proposed benefits, the quantification of muscle fatigue during FES cycling remains poorly documented. This study sought to quantify the relationship between the vibrational performance of electrically-evoked muscles measured through mechanomyography (MMG) and its oxidative metabolism through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) characteristics during FES cycling in fatiguing paralyzed muscles in individuals with

Simultaneous perception of prosthetic and natural vision in AMD patients.

Loss of photoreceptors in atrophic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) results in severe visual impairment. Since the low-resolution peripheral vision is retained in such conditions, restoration of central vision should not jeopardize the surrounding healthy retina and allow for simultaneous use of the natural and prosthetic sight. This interim report, prespecified in the study protocol, presents the first clinical results with a photovoltaic substitute of the photoreceptors providing simultaneous use of the central prosthetic and peripheral natural vision in atrophic AMD. In this open-labe

Novel Noxipoint Therapy versus Conventional Physical Therapy for Chronic Neck and Shoulder Pain: Multicentre Randomised Controlled Trials.

As chronic pain affects 115 million people and costs $600B annually in the US alone, effective noninvasive nonpharmacological remedies are desirable. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and the generalisability of Noxipoint therapy (NT), a novel electrotherapy characterised by site-specific stimulation, intensity-and-submodality-specific settings and a immobilization period, for chronic neck and shoulder pain. Ninety-seven heavily pretreated severe chronic neck/shoulder pain patients were recruited; 34 and 44 patients were randomly allocated to different treatment arms in t

Chronic measurement of the stimulation selectivity of the flat interface nerve electrode.

The flat interface nerve electrode (FINE) is an attempt to improve the stimulation selectivity of extraneural electrodes. By reshaping peripheral nerves into elliptical cylinders, central fibers are moved closer to the nerve-electrode interface, and additional surface area is created for contact placement. The goals of this study were to test the hypothesis that greater nerve reshaping leads to improved selectivity and to examine the chronic recruitment properties of the FINE. Three FINEs were developed to reshape peripheral nerves to different degrees. Four electrodes of each type were implan

Effects of interferential current stimulation for treatment of subjects with recurrent jaw pain.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of interferential current stimulation (ICS) to decrease recurrent jaw pain and to increase maximum vertical jaw opening. Forty subjects with either a history of recurrent jaw pain of three months' duration or of constant, chronic jaw pain that recurred within the preceding two months participated in the study. Twenty subjects received three 20-minute treatments of ICS, and 20 other subjects received three 20-minute treatments with a placebo procedure. The intensity of jaw pain and the amount of maximum vertical jaw opening were the dependent measures. Sca

Use of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation to explore inhibitory and facilitatory circuits in muscles of the human lower limb.

The aim of this study was to explore the primary afferent depolarization mechanism, to determine whether the soleus transspinal evoked potential (TEP), elicited through transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation over the L1-L2 level, is modulated by presynaptic inhibition and heteronymous facilitation, similar to the Hoffmann (H) reflex, elicited by posterior tibial nerve stimulation. Twenty subjects participated in two experiments. Experiment 1 assessed D1 and D2 inhibition by conditioning the H reflex and TEP with peroneal nerve stimulation at different interstimulus intervals (ISIs; ranging fro

A Self-Powered Thermogalvanic Hydrogel Dressing for In Situ Wound Monitoring and Enhanced Healing.

Wound management critically requires the synergistic integration of real-time monitoring and precise intervention. Current electrical stimulation dressings suffer from external power dependence, poor air permeability, restricted customizability, and decoupled monitoring and treatment. Herein, this study presents a self-powered, breathable porous thermogalvanic hydrogel dressing, which employs a poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate double-network matrix loaded with the [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox couple and is endowed with personalized wound-matching capability by DLP-based 3D printing

From cranium to brain: Rethinking tES neuromodulation through the peripheral pathways.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is traditionally framed as a purely cortical intervention, and weak direct or alternating currents delivered through scalp electrodes are assumed to modulate excitability or entrain oscillations directly under electrodes. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that this transcranial view is incomplete. We synthesized converging human and animal evidence showing that tES also co-stimulates cranial and cervical nerves, especially branches of the trigeminal and greater occipital nerves, which engage deep brainstem neuromodulatory nuclei, such as the

Conductive extracellular matrix derived/chitosan methacrylate/ graphene oxide-pegylated hybrid hydrogel for cell expansion.

Electrical stimulation has emerged as a cornerstone technique in the rapidly evolving field of biomedical engineering, particularly within the realms of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. It facilitates cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation, thereby advancing the development of accurate tissue models and enhancing drug-testing methodologies. Conductive hydrogels, which enable the conduction of microcurrents in 3D in vitro cultures, are central to this advancement. The integration of high-electroconductive nanomaterials, such as graphene oxide (GO), into hydrogels has revol

A full-custom fully implantable cochlear implant system validated in vivo with an animal model.

Realizations of fully implantable cochlear implants (FICIs) for providing adequate solution to esthetic concerns and frequent battery replacement have lacked of addressing system level criteria as a complete device. Here, we present a full-custom FICI that considers design of both an implantable sensor for wide range sound sensing and a signal conditioning circuit for electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve. The microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based acoustic sensor utilizes multiple cantilever beam structures to sense and filter the mechanical vibrations on the ossicular chain. The a

Cortical surface plasticity promotes map remodeling and alleviates tinnitus in adult mice.

Tinnitus induced by hearing loss is caused primarily by irreversible damage to the peripheral auditory system, which results in abnormal neural responses and frequency map disruption in the central auditory system. It remains unclear whether and how electrical rehabilitation of the auditory cortex can alleviate tinnitus. We hypothesize that stimulation of the cortical surface can alleviate tinnitus by enhancing neural responses and promoting frequency map reorganization. To test this hypothesis, we assessed and activated cortical maps using our newly designed graphene-based electrode array wit
