[The influence of organic myocardial damage on parameters of signal-averaged electrocardiogram in patients with electrically-induced atrial fibrillation].

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of myocardium organic damage on time-domain parameters of atrial signal-averaged ECG (ASAECG) in patients with electrically induced paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). The investigation was done in 120 patients with subjective symptoms of cardiac rhythm disorders suggesting atrial fibrillation and for further analysis were selected 51 patients in whom atrial PAF was induced during transoesophageal pacing (TEP). Patients were divided according to organic damage of myocardium-38 pts (24 male and 14 female, mean age 52.1 +/- 11.6-group I) and with

A1, but not A2A, adenosine receptors modulate electrically stimulated [14C]acetylcholine release from rat cortex.

Adenosine A1 receptors are known to be widely distributed in various regions of the brain. A2A receptors are enriched in the dopamine-rich areas of the brain, but are also present in rat cortex. Electrically stimulated, perfused rat cortical slices were used to examine the influence of interactions between A1 and A2A receptors on the release of acetylcholine (ACh) from cortical cholinergic nerves. The A1-selective agonist, N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA) caused a dose-dependent inhibition of ACh release, which was attenuated in the added presence of the A1-selective antagonist 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyc

Electrical conductivity of tear fluid in healthy persons and keratoconjunctivitis sicca patients measured by a flexible conductimetric sensor.

BACKGROUND: It is known that the osmolarity of tears increases in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) patients and therefore could be a sensitive and specific indicator for the diagnosis of KCS. However, owing to the difficulties in using the current methods of tear fluid measurement these procedures have not been employed in clinical practice. A newly devised flexible conductimetric sensor fabricated using microelectronic techniques is small and flexible enough to be placed on the ocular surface to measure the electrical conductivity can be considered as an indirect function of electrolyte activ

Electrophysiological characteristics of lesions in facial palsies of different etiologies. A study using electrical and magnetic stimulation techniques.

Using magnetic stimulation techniques in addition to conventional electrical stimulation, the entire facial motor pathway can be assessed electrophysiologically. To study the diagnostic yield of these examinations, 174 patients with facial palsies of a variety of etiologies were examined (85 Bell's palsies, 24 Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), 19 Lyme borreliosis, 17 zoster oticus, 12 meningeal affections, 10 brain-stem disorders and 7 HIV-related facial palsies). The facial nerve was stimulated electrically at the stylomastoid fossa and magnetically within its canalicular portion. Additionally,

[Stellate ganglion block with transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS): a double-blind study with healthy probands].

OBJECTIVE: Blockade of the stellate ganglion is an established and highly effective diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for management of certain acute and chronic pain syndromes or other disorders. The paratracheal injection of a local anaesthetic is the simplest and most frequently used approach for blocking the cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves (ganglion stellate). However, since serious complications can occur during or following the anterior paratracheal technique including accidental intravenous or intraarterial injection, non-invasive methods for blockade of the stellate ganglion have

Electrical coupling between cultured glomus cells of the rat carotid body: observations with current and voltage clamping.

Electrically coupled pairs of cultured rat glomus cells were used. In one group of experiments, both cells were current-clamped. Delivery of positive or negative pulses to Cell 1 elicited appreciable voltage noise in this cell and large action potentials (probably Ca2+ spikes) in about 10% of them. Both passive and active electrical events spread to Cell 2, presumably through the gap junctions between them. The coupling coefficient (Kc) was larger for the spikes than for non-regenerative voltage noise. In another group of experiments, Cell 1 was current-clamped and Cell 2 was voltage-clamped a

Facial motor responses evoked by direct electrical stimulation of the trigeminal root. Localizing value for radiofrequency thermorhizotomy.

In Sweet's description of RF-thermocoagulation for trigeminal neuralgia, the trigeminal nerve was stimulated at 50 c/s to evoke paraesthesias, in order to check the electrode location before the thermolesion is made. In 1979, we changed the frequency to 5 c/s, so as to produce in addition twitches in the masticatory muscles (in stead of the less detectable tetanization produced by 50 c/s stimulation). Since then, we started to observe, also, twitches in the muscles innervated by the facial nerve. These twitches were not always in the Orbicularis oculi (which corresponds to the classical blink

Distribution of Fos-like immunoreactivity in the auditory pathway of the Sprague-Dawley rat elicited by cochlear electrical stimulation.

Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) was mapped in the auditory pathway of Sprague-Dawley rats in response to unilateral electrical stimulation of the cochlea implanted with two stimulating electrodes. Densely packed FLI neurons were widely distributed in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (more ipsilaterally than contralaterally), while FLI neurons were rare in the posteroventral cochlear nucleus and virtually absent in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus. Sparse FLI was detected in the superior olivary complex, the pontine nuclei and the ipsilateral dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus, whereas the co

Cohort and nested case-control studies of hematopoietic cancers and brain cancer among electric utility workers.

Recent studies have raised concern about the potential health effects of occupational exposures to power frequency electric and magnetic fields. We evaluated cancer mortality for leukemia, brain cancer, and lymphoma from 1960 to 1988 in a cohort of 36,221 electric utility workers using cohort analyses and three nested case-control studies. From a volunteer sample of the current workforce that represented a variety of different occupations and work locations, we collected 776 days of magnetic field measurements. We derived exposure information from company job history information and developed

Inhibitory effects of cyanide on mechanical and electrical activities in the circular muscle of gastric antrum of guinea-pig stomach.

Effects of cyanide (CN) on spontaneous mechanical and electrical activities were studied in the circular muscle of the guinea-pig gastric antrum. CN (0.05-0.5 mM) inhibited both mechanical and electrical activities, but the inhibition was stronger in the former than the latter (slow wave). When glucose was removed for more than 30 min, slow wave was also blocked by CN. It is likely that ATP necessary for the generation of spontaneous activity can be supplied through either glycolysis or oxidative phosphorylation. CN slightly depolarized the membrane and the inhibition by CN was not affected by

Thoracic duct lymph flow in fetal sheep with increased venous pressure from electrically induced tachycardia.

The intent of this study was to investigate thoracic duct lymph flow, as it is related to the development of hydrops fetalis during rapid atrial pacing. We studied 6 fetal sheep at 128 +/- 6 days of gestation who had chronically placed thoracic duct catheters, aortic and superior vena cava catheters, and atrial pacing electrodes. Atrial pacing at 317 beats/min caused an elevation in central venous pressure from a baseline value of 3 Torr to 7 Torr without affecting pH, arterial blood gas tensions, aortic blood pressure, total protein concentration, or colloid osmotic pressure, although there w

In vitro electro-mechanical activity of the human colon. Simultaneous recording of the electrical patterns of the two muscle layers.

Electrical and mechanical activity on longitudinal and circular layers of the human sigmoid colon were simultaneously studied. Recordings were obtained from two electrode sites spaced 3 cm apart in a piece of colon which had been resected surgically and perfused in an organ bath. Spontaneous electrical activity of the colon showed slow waves and spikes. Slow waves were present for only 24.5% and 12% of the recording time on the longitudinal and circular layers, respectively, and they appeared as localized activity which was irregular in amplitude and varying in frequency. Electrical coupling b

Influence of (+/-)-CP-96,345 and SR 48968 on electrical field stimulation of the isolated guinea-pig main bronchus.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of (+/-)-CP-96,345 and SR 48968, two new nonpeptide antagonists of neurokinin NK1 and NK2 receptors, respectively, on the response of isolated guinea pig main bronchi to electrical field stimulation (EFS). Bronchi were stimulated transmurally with biphasic pulses (16 Hz, 1 ms, 320 mA for 10 s) in the presence of indomethacin (10(-6) M) and propranolol (10(-6) M). Two successive contractile responses were observed. Both responses were abolished by tetrodotoxin (10(-6) M) whereas only the first rapid phase was abolished by atropine (10(-6) M).

Spontaneous release of nitric oxide inhibits electrical, Ca2+ and mechanical transients in canine gastric smooth muscle.

1. In canine antrum, rhythmic electrical activity consists of a rapid upstroke phase followed by a plateau depolarization. In response to slow waves, cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]cyt) and tension increased. 2. Addition of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, 0.5 microM) decreased the amplitude of the plateau phase of slow waves without significant effects on the upstroke depolarization. SNP also inhibited changes in [Ca2+]cyt and tension associated with the plateau potential. SNP induced a negative chronotropic effect at concentrations above 0.1 microM. 3. Similar to the effects of SNP, illumination of muscles

Reappraisal of electrical cure of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia--lessons from a modified catheter ablation technique.

A modified catheter ablation technique was studied prospectively in 29 patients with atrioventricular (AV) nodal reentrant tachycardia. A His bundle electrode catheter was used for mapping and ablation. Cathodic electroshocks (100-250 J) were delivered from the distal two electrodes (connected in common) of the His bundle catheter to the site selected for ablation. The optimal ablation site recorded the earliest retrograde atrial depolarization, simultaneous or earlier than the QRS complex, with absence of a His bundle deflection during AV nodal reentrant tachycardia. One additional electrical

Electrical stimulation and multichannel EMG recording for identification of functional neural tissue during cauda equina surgery.

Electrical stimulation of structures within the surgical field was used to identify functional neural elements during 25 cauda equina operations. EMG responses from anterior thigh, posterior thigh, and anal sphincter muscles were recorded simultaneously using a multichannel signal averager. During nine operations, stimulation of a presumed filum terminale or other tissue produced clear EMG responses, prompting modification of surgical procedures. In one patient, this resulted in preservation of a flattened spinal cord which resembled a band of scar tissue. Some EMG responses were restricted to
