The national prevalence of disorders of gut brain interaction in the United Kingdom in comparison to their worldwide prevalence: Results from the Rome foundation global epidemiology study.

BACKGROUND: There are minimal epidemiological data comparing the burden of disorders of gut brain interaction (DGBI) in the UK with other countries. We compared the prevalence of DGBI in the UK with other countries that participated in the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study (RFGES) online. METHODS: Participants from 26 countries completed the RFGES survey online including the Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire and an in-depth supplemental questionnaire with questions about dietary habits. UK sociodemographic and prevalence data were compared with the other 25 countries pooled together.

Hepatitis C (HCV) among Black and Latino sexual minority men (SMM) in the Southern United States: Protocol of a prospective cohort epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority men (SMM) who engage in condomless anal sex and injection drug use are at increased risk for viral Hepatitis C (HCV) infection. Additionally, studies have found racial disparities in HCV cases across the United States. However, very few epidemiological studies have examined factors associated with HCV infection in HIV-negative Black and Latino SMM. This paper describes the rationale, design, and methodology of a prospective epidemiological study to quantify the HCV prevalence and incidence and investigate the individual and environmental-level predictors of HCV infe

Understanding the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, knowledge and barriers to treatment and prevention of malaria among returning international laborers in northern Vietnam: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: With the decline in local malaria transmission in Vietnam as a result of the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) elimination activities, a greater focus on the importation and potential reintroduction of transmission are essential to support malaria elimination objectives. METHODS: We conducted a multi-method assessment of the demographics, epidemiology, and clinical characteristics of imported malaria among international laborers returning from African or Southeast Asian countries to Vietnam. Firstly, we conducted a retrospective review of hospital records of patients from Ja

Epidemiology and characteristics of acral lentiginous melanoma compared to lentigo melanoma in France: a multicentric retrospective study from the French cohort RIC-Mel database.

BACKGROUND: Skin phototype, latitude and sun exposure are classic risk factors for melanomas but are not relevant to acrolentiginous melanomas (ALM). ALM is not related to chronic sun exposure because the thick stratum corneum acts as a barrier to penetration of UV rays, whereas LMM occurs in skin with high photoaging due to chronic sun exposure. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine if any difference exists between "solar" melanomas and "non-solar" melanomas based on a comparison between LMM and ALM. MATERIALS & METHODS: We extracted all data for ALM and LMM patients, from March 2012 to

Feasibility of community at-home dried blood spot collection combined with pooled reverse transcription PCR as a viable and convenient method for malaria epidemiology studies.

BACKGROUND: Many Plasmodium infections in endemic regions exist at densities below the limit of detection of standard diagnostic tools. These infections threaten control efforts and may impact vaccine and therapeutic drug studies. Simple, cost-effective methods are needed to study the natural history of asymptomatic submicroscopic parasitaemia. Self-collected dried blood spots (DBS) analysed using pooled and individual quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) provide such a solution. Here, the feasibility and acceptability of daily at-home DBS collections for qRT-

SARS-CoV-2 antibody dynamics in blood donors and COVID-19 epidemiology in eight Brazilian state capitals: A serial cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 situation in Brazil is complex due to large differences in the shape and size of regional epidemics. Understanding these patterns is crucial to understand future outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 or other respiratory pathogens in the country. METHODS: We tested 97,950 blood donation samples for IgG antibodies from March 2020 to March 2021 in 8 of Brazil's most populous cities. Residential postal codes were used to obtain representative samples. Weekly age- and sex-specific seroprevalence were estimated by correcting the crude seroprevalence by test sensitivity, specificity, and

Magnetic resonance white matter changes in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. The subset of the PURE-MIND (Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological) cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Changes typical for cerebral small vessel disease (i.a. white matter hyperintensities - WMHs) are often found accidentally in neuroimaging studies. Although asymptomatic, this condition increases the risk of future ischaemic incidents and neurodegenerative disorders. Sleep apnoea is a recognised risk factor for vascular diseases. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of, and association between, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cerebral small vessel disease in the studied population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred and seven patients (participants of Prospective U
