[Diagnosis of cervical spondylitis disease: An evidence based review].

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of cervical spondylitis (CS) is based on three factors: clinical, neuroradiological and neurophysiological data. … of high specificity since it gives only a small proportion of false positive results. Somatosensory evoked potentials (PESS) from the tibialis posterior is a highly sensitive test for the diagnosis of spondylitic cervical myelopathy (SCM). The combination of PESS and motor evoked potentials may be useful for the detection of patients with SCM at presymptomatic stag …

Binaural auditory processing in multiple sclerosis subjects.

In order to relate human auditory processing to physiological and anatomical experimental animal data, we have examined the interrelationships between behavioral, electrophysiological and anatomical data obtained from human subjects with focal brainstem lesions. Thirty-eight subjects with multiple sclerosis were studied with tests of interaural time and level discrimination (just noticeable differences or jnds), brainstem auditory evoked potentials and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Interaural testing used two types of stimuli, high-pass (> 4000 Hz) and low-pass (< 1000 Hz) noise bursts. Abn…

Evaluation of Speed and Accuracy of Next-Generation Auditory Steady State Response and Auditory Brainstem Response Audiometry in Children With Normal Hearing and Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: The first objective of this study was to compare the predicted audiometric thresholds obtained by auditory steady state response (ASSR) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) in infants and toddlers when both techniques use optimal stimuli and detection algorithms. This information will aid in determining the basis for large discrepancies in ABR and ASSR measures found in past studies. The hypothesis was that advancements in ASSR response detection would improve (lower) thresholds and decrease discrepancies between the thresholds produced by the two techniques. The second objective

Travelling wave velocity test and Ménière's disease revisited.

Transtympanic Electrocochleography (TT-ECoG) and the glycerol test can aid in the diagnostic process of Ménière's disease (MD). Measurement of travelling wave velocity (TWV) has been proposed as an alternative to TT-ECoG to detect endolymphatic hydrops. We assessed the feasibility and obtained normative data of the TWV test in the diagnosis of MD, and compared the test results in MD patients with their symptoms and their TT-ECoG results. The TWV test records two runs of auditory brainstem responses to clicks that are ipsilaterally masked with two different high pass filtered noise bands. The r

Dehydration testing and the diagnosis of Menière's disease: case report.

A 34-year-old female presented to our clinic with complaints of hearing loss, tinnitus, and severe rotational vertigo. A test battery including complete audiometric testing, auditory brainstem response (ABR) audiometry, electronystagmography (ENG), electrocochleography (ECoG), and dehydration testing was performed. Monitoring of hearing sensitivity, speech understanding, and ECoG responses following administration of a dehydrating agent were sensitive measures of cochlear function and confirmed the diagnosis of Meniere's disease. The induced changes also contributed to the therapeutic measures

Auditory brainstem response in obstructive sleep apnea.

Auditory brainstem response (ABR) has been used by several investigators to study the role of the brain stem in the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These studies have produced conflicting results. We studied 27 preoperative OSA patients and 17 controls using click stimuli presented at a slow (11.7/second) rate and at a fast (57.7/second) rate. ABR was repeated postoperatively in 18 patients. There were no statistically significant differences in the ABRs of preoperative OSA patients when compared with the control group. However, the preoperative recordings showed statisticall

Cochlear processes affecting wave V latency of the auditory evoked brain stem response. A study of patients with sensory hearing loss.

The effects of inner ear pathologies on wave V latency of the auditory evoked brain stem response (BSR) were studied in 12 selected patients with flat, low-frequency, severe high-frequency, and gradual high-frequency sensory hearing loss. In patients with flat and low-frequency sensory hearing loss (Meniere's disease), the latencies of wave V at intensities 4--10 dB greater than their response thresholds were roughly the same as those in normal-hearing subjects. In patients with severe high-frequency sensory hearing loss (sharp cut-off at about 2 or 3 kHz), the latencies of wave V were always

Ciguatoxin enhances quantal transmitter release from frog motor nerve terminals.

1. Ciguatoxin (CTX), a marine toxin produced by the benthic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus, is responsible for a complex endemic disease in man known as ciguatera fish poisoning. In the present study we have investigated the effects of purified CTX extracted for Gymnothorax javanicus moray-eel liver on frog isolated neuromuscular preparations with conventional electrophysiological techniques. 2. CTX (1-2.5 nM) applied to cutaneous pectoris nerve-muscle preparations induced, after a short delay, spontaneous fibrillations of the muscle fibres that could be suppressed with 1 microM tetrodot

Pharmacological and physiological properties of the after-hyperpolarization current of bullfrog ganglion neurones.

1. The slowly decaying, calcium-dependent after-hyperpolarization (a.h.p.) that follows action potentials in bullfrog ganglion B cells has previously been shown to be generated by a potassium current called IAHP. We have recorded IAHP using a switched, single-electrode hybrid clamp where current-clamp mode was changed to voltage-clamp mode immediately after repolarization of a spike or the last spike of a train. 2. Reduction of extracellular calcium reduced the decay time of IAHP following a single spike. At all levels of extracellular calcium tested (0.5-4 mM), the decay time of IAHP was long

Electrophysiological observations on the action of the purified scorpion venom, tityustoxin, on nerve and skeletal muscle of the rat.

When tityustoxin (TsTX, 1.43 muM; mol. wt. 6995) was applied to the rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm muscle preparation, both the directly and indirectly elicited muscle contractions were transiently potentiated by about 30 and 60%, respectively, and the half-relaxation time was prolonged to more than 10 times the control. The onset of potentiation of muscle contraction was immediate and coincided closely with the prolongation of the directly elicited action potential and depolarization of the muscle membrane but preceded the presynaptic effect of the toxin. TsTX antagonized the neuromuscular block

Evaluation and Utility of Submaximal Stimulation Intensity in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in the Standing Horse☆.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been successfully used in horses to evaluate function and integrity of descending motor pathways in patients affected by neurological gait abnormalities. In preceding studies, lengthening latency times (LT) of cranially evoked limb muscle potentials have been considered a reliable diagnostic parameter. Standardized settings use device output signal intensities of 100%. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of submaximal stimulation intensities (SI) and to determine the minimum coil output necessary to evoke motor unit potentials. As an ad

Endogenous pacemaker activity of rat tumour somatotrophs.

1. Cells derived from a rat pituitary tumour (GC cell line) that continuously release growth hormone behave as endogenous pacemakers. In simultaneous patch clamp recordings and cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) imaging, they displayed rhythmic action potentials (44.7 +/- 2.7 mV, 178 +/- 40 ms, 0.30 +/- 0.04 Hz) and concomitant [Ca2+]i transients (374 +/- 57 nM, 1.0 +/- 0.2 s, 0.27 +/- 0.03 Hz). 2. Action potentials and [Ca2+]i transients were reversibly blocked by removal of external Ca2+, addition of nifedipine (1 microM) or Ni2+ (40 microM), but were insensitive to TTX (1 microM). An L-

Slow postsynaptic potentials in neurones of submucous plexus of guinea-pig caecum and their mimicry by noradrenaline and various peptides.

Intracellular recordings of membrane potential and membrane currents were made from neurones in the submucous plexus of the guinea-pig caecum in vitro. Fast and slow excitatory postsynaptic potentials and slow inhibitory postsynaptic potentials were recorded from the majority of neurones following focal stimulation of presynaptic fibres in the plexus. The slow inhibitory postsynaptic potential was associated with an increase in membrane conductance and reversed its polarity at -90 mV; it was reversibly blocked by yohimbine. The slow excitatory postsynaptic potential and its underlying current

Attention-Adaptive BCI-AOT System Enhances Motor Recovery and Neural Engagement After Stroke.

Stroke frequently results in long-term motor deficits that impair quality of life. Action observation therapy (AOT) has shown promise for motor recovery through engagement of the mirror neuron system (MNS), yet its passive nature and lack of attentional tracking limit its neuroplasticity efficacy. To address these limitations, we developed a closed-loop Brain-Computer Interface-integrated AOT (BCI-AOT) system employing real-time Steady-State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP)-based attention monitoring to dynamically control therapy delivery. In a within-subject crossover study, 22 individuals wi

Comparative study of ERP habituation to tones and fearful vocalizations in autism spectrum disorders: a translational biomarker for sensory hypersensitivity.

Sensory issues are common in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and can significantly affect daily living. The phenomena of gating and habituation of event-related potentials (ERPs) to repetitive stimuli have been suggested as potential biomarkers reflecting atypical sensory processing in ASD. Sensory hypersensitivity and anxiety are closely related in ASD, and habituation to emotionally evocative stimuli may serve as a more sensitive biomarker for sensory hypersensitivity symptoms. However, previous studies have primarily used tonal stimuli, and there has been little investigation into whether h

Inattentional Deafness: Visual Load Leads to Time-Specific Suppression of Auditory Evoked Responses.

UNLABELLED: Due to capacity limits on perception, conditions of high perceptual load lead to reduced processing of unattended stimuli (Lavie et al., 2014). Accumulating work demonstrates the effects of visual perceptual load on visual cortex responses, but the effects on auditory processing remain poorly understood. Here we establish the neural mechanisms underlying "inattentional deafness"--the failure to perceive auditory stimuli under high visual perceptual load. Participants performed a visual search task of low (target dissimilar to nontarget items) or high (target similar to nontarget it

Cortical auditory processing and communication in children with autism: electrophysiological/behavioral relations.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relations between late auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) recorded at temporal sites (the N1c wave or Tb) and verbal and non-verbal abilities in children with autism. The study was performed in 26 mentally retarded children with autism (AUT) aged 4-8 years (mean age +/- S.E.M. = 71 +/- 2 months; mean verbal and non-verbal developmental quotient +/- S.E.M. = 36 +/- 4 and 48 +/- 3). The stimuli used were 750 Hz tone bursts of 200 ms duration delivered binaurally at different intensity levels (50, 60, 70, 80 dB SPL) with 3-5 s interstimulus i…
