Curvularia lunata: a rare cause of black-grain eumycetoma.

Curvularia lunata is a dematiaceous fungus that rarely causes cutaneous infections in immunocompetent humans. We describe a case of mycetoma pedis caused by Curvularia lunata in a 50-year-old woman from a rural farming community who had prolonged morbidity due to diagnostic delay. She improved with antifungal therapy, showing a satisfactory clinical response after 12 months of treatment.

Cryptosporidiosis in Idaho lambs: natural and experimental infections.

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in lambs of a farm flock and an orphan-lamb rearing operation and in a hospitalized lamb. The clinical course was brief, with mild diarrhea and oocyst shedding during the diarrheic episode. Feces from the hospitalized lamb were used to reproduce the disease. Diarrhea and oocyst shedding occurred in inoculated lambs and their contact twin siblings but not in uninoculated noncontact control lambs or in inoculated ewes.

Spinal cord abscess caused by Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes organisms were isolated from an intramedullary abscess in the cervical part of the spinal cord of an afebrile, previously healthy man who was occupationally exposed to farm animals. Acute neurologic abnormalities developed after a lumbar puncture, and cord widening was shown by myelography. Surgical decompression and antibiotic treatment for four weeks resulted in apparent bacteriologic cure with moderate neurologic sequelae.

Review: Toilet training in pigs: Theory, methods and design.

Pigs naturally separate their elimination area from their lying area. However, in intensive farming systems, it is a challenge to structure the pens in a way that all pigs eliminate in the designated areas. The concept of a pig toilet has been proposed to increase animal welfare and reduce ammonia released in pig farming. A pig toilet is defined as a designated limited area within the pen where pigs voluntarily excrete and can be rewarded for depositing their urine and faeces. This review aims to assess, from a behavioural and design point of view, the feasibility and potential solutions of tr

Research on the Assessment of Dairy Cow Dry Matter Intake Using ITSO-Optimized Stacking Ensemble Learning.

Dry matter intake (DMI) in dairy cows is a critical indicator of nutrient intake from feed, serving as the cornerstone of precision feeding practices, playing a critical role in improving production efficiency and enhancing the quality of dairy products. To address the high costs of traditional measurement methods and the structural complexity and large parameter counts of neural network models, this study proposes a Stacking ensemble learning model to assess DMI, with model parameters optimized using the Tuna Swarm Optimization (TSO) algorithm to enhance assessment accuracy, taking cow body w

Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Assay for the Detection of Bacterial Bovine Mastitis: A Systematic Review.

Bovine bacterial mastitis is an inflammation of cows' udders by bacterial infection, leading to significant economic, animal welfare and public health consequences. Conventional diagnostic tests are expensive, time-consuming, and require specialised laboratories, making them unsuitable for on-farm surveillance and timely interventions. As an alternative, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) has gained attention as a rapid, cost-effective and sensitive molecular diagnostic. LAMP amplifies DNA at a constant temperature, offering a simple and efficient method for bacterial detection. Thi

Spatiotemporal distribution of mass flows of quaternary ammonium compounds in Japanese rivers.

Global demand for quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs)-biocides linked to multidrug resistance-increased in response to the recent outbreaks of covid-19 and African swine fever. To better understand their sources and dynamics in the aquatic environment, we monitored 13 QACs (benzalkonium chloride [BAC]-C8, C10, C12, C14, C16, C18; benzethonium chloride; cetylpyridinium chloride; dialkyldimethylammonium chloride [DDAC]-C8, C10, C12; and alkyltrimethylammonium chloride-C12, C16) in 14 rivers across Japan that drain catchments with various degrees of sewerage and intensities of swine farming, onc

The Impact of Cold Storage and Seasonality on Raw Cow Milk Microbiota, Assessed by Conventional and Viability PCR.

The microbiota of healthy Holstein cow's milk was analyzed to evaluate the effects of immediate (freezing at the farm: on-site workflow) and delayed processing (freezing after cool transport: laboratory workflow) and to investigate seasonal changes in September, November, and January. Propidium monoazide (PMA) was also used to distinguish between viable and non-viable cells. Microbiota composition differed between the laboratory and the on-site workflow. After cool transport, the abundances of Lactobacillus and Turicibacter increased, while those of Streptococcus, Bradyrhizobium, and Acinetoba

Congenital vascular malformations in the intestine of 2 neonatal goat kids.

Disorders of the intestinal vasculature in animals include arteriovenous malformations, telangiectasia (ectasia, angiodysplasia), hamartomas, and neoplasia (hemangiomas, hemangiosarcomas). Two, 2-d-old, female Nigerian dwarf goat kids born to different dams on the same farm had severe and progressive abdominal distension and were euthanized. The autopsies revealed segmental circumferential dark-red areas that caused focal constriction of the mid-jejunum. The constriction led to obstruction of the intestinal lumen and proximal dilation of the jejunum and duodenum in both cases. Clostridium perf

Interstitial lung disease in small ruminants.

Interstitial lung diseases of sheep and goats, which are caused by a range of infectious, parasitic, and toxic agents, have substantial negative health and welfare impacts globally. Within this category of pulmonary disease, entities such as peste des petits ruminants (PPR) can undermine the livelihood of farming communities in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia; enzootic pneumonia, maedi, and ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma compromise the productivity of farm enterprises where sheep are housed for prolonged periods. I detail the pathogenesis and lesions caused by a range of viral, bacterial

Pooled Shotgun Metagenomics Reveals Cloacal Microbiota Composition and Resistome Patterns in Chickens from Kazakhstan.

Monitoring poultry microbiota and antimicrobial resistance genes is important, as they can reflect flock health, farm conditions, and the level of antimicrobial resistance. Although shotgun metagenomics has been widely applied worldwide to investigate poultry microbiota and antimicrobial resistance, comparable baseline datasets describing the cloacal microbiota and resistome of poultry in Kazakhstan are scarce. In this study, taxonomic and resistome profiles were characterized in pooled metagenomes of the cloacal microbiota of chickens sampled from household and industrial poultry farms in Kaz…

Evaluation of 2 culture-based rapid tests used by veterinary practices as a tool for selective treatment of clinical mastitis.

Antimicrobial resistance necessitates more judicious antimicrobial use, including in dairy production where mastitis remains the primary driver of antibiotic consumption. Selective treatment of nonsevere clinical mastitis (STCM) requires rapid differentiation between gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, as only gram-positive infections generally benefit from antimicrobial therapy. Because conventional laboratory culture is too slow for STCM, rapid testing systems for pathogen detection in milk are used on farm (performed and analyzed by farm personnel) or on practice (performed and analy

Metagenomic identification, isolation, and complete genome characterization of two novel picornaviruses in wild duck from Northeastern Siberia.

Duck hepatitis A virus (DHAV, Avihepatovirus ahepati species) is a well-known pathogen of domestic ducks, causing fatal disease in ducklings and posing a significant burden to duck poultry farms. Avihepatovirus ahepati is the sole species within the genus Avihepatovirus and is classified into three distinct genotypes: DHAV-1, DHAV-2, and DHAV-3. In our study, we detected and isolated two strains belonging to the Picornaviridae family from Anas crecca in Northeastern Asia. One of the isolates is related to the DHAV-1 group; however, its polyprotein gene sequence shares only 77.83% nucleotide id…

Phytogenic feed additives as alternatives to antibiotics in poultry production: A review.

The overuse of antimicrobials in food-producing animals, particularly poultry, has led to growing concerns about multidrug microbial resistance, posing significant risks to both animal and human health. Subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics have traditionally been used to enhance growth and improve economic efficiency in poultry farming. However, these practices have facilitated the emergence of resistant microbial strains, threatening global health security and prompting a search for sustainable alternatives. This review highlights the significance of phytogenic as feed additives (PFAs) as prom

Heat stress affects the functionality of the ovine cumulus-oocyte complex and subsequent in vitro embryo production.

Global population growth requires an increase in the production of food, particularly meat, with an expected increase in sheep farming. However, climate change challenges livestock management, with heat stress negatively impacting reproductive performance. In vitro embryo production (IVP) in sheep farming is promising, although optimizing embryo quality and efficiency remains challenging. Heat stress impairs oocyte developmental competence, affecting IVP outcomes. This study investigated the effects of season on oocyte quality and embryo production given seasonal variations in the temperature

Open Data Are Urgently Needed for One Health-Based Investigations: The Example of the 2024 Salmonella Umbilo Multi-Country Outbreak.

In 2024, a significant Salmonella Umbilo outbreak was reported across the European Union and beyond, traced to contaminated vegetables originating from the Province of Salerno (Italy). Subsequent on-site inspections in the production area revealed a mismanaged manure storage tank, which became the focus of a GIS-based investigation aimed at locating nearby animal establishments. Within a 1-km radius-encompassing both the tank and the contaminated greenhouses-three buffalo farms were identified. Farm inspections revealed buffalo calves exhibiting enteric symptoms. Fecal samples collected from t…
