Trace Amine Associated Receptor 1 (TAAR1) is a novel pharmacological target. TAAR1 are well-documented to play a modulatory role in the dopaminergic system. In spite of a growing number of studies of TAAR1 effects, little is still known about the behavioral pharmacology of TAAR1 ligands, including effects of repeated TAAR1 agonist administration. The present study appears to be the first that estimated the action of TAAR1 agonists on schedule-induced polydipsia, a type of adjunctive behavior, which is considered to be useful for evaluating certain aspects of obsessive-compulsive and related di

OBJECTIVE: To investigate BMI-specific associations between health-related behaviours in early adolescence and the likelihood of overweight in mid-adolescence in a sample of Norwegian adolescents.
DESIGN: Longitudinal study of 393 adolescents recruited from schools in Telemark County, Norway. Parents reported baseline data on children's behavioural variables and background data (at age 12-13 years). Dietary data were reported by means of a retrospective FFQ. Eating patterns were identified using principal component analysis. Height and weight were measured at baseline and 3-year follow-up. BM

Neonatal maternal separation (MS) in rats has been reported to result in permanent dysfunctions of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the development of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors later in life. In this study, we examined the effects of post-weaning social isolation stress on food intake and body weight gain of rats with MS experience. MS was performed daily for 180 min during the first 2 weeks of birth and nonhandled control (NH) pups were left undisturbed. Weanling male pups were caged either in a group of three or singly (social isolation), and then subjected to behavio

Zopiclone and CGS 9896 are two nonbenzodiazepine compounds which have been shown to displace benzodiazepines from their binding sites. The present study compared the behavioral effects of these two compounds in rats with those of chlordiazepoxide. The three drugs produced dose-related increases in punished drinking as did pentobarbital and meprobamate but not PK 9084, which also acts at benzodiazepine binding sites, or buspirone. Rates of lever pressing suppressed by punishment were also increased by chlordiazepoxide and zopiclone. CGS 9896 exerted a similar although less marked effect. Lever

Herbivorous insects are among the most ecologically successful animal groups. However, the adaptive mechanisms that allow them to exploit plant hosts, which are often nutrient-poor (low in simple sugars, high in structural carbohydrates) and defended by toxic secondary metabolites, are not fully resolved. Here, we investigated the evolutionary basis of herbivory in Lordiphosa clarofinis, a drosophilid species feeding on living plant tissues, using multi-omics approaches. Behavioral experiments revealed a strong oviposition preference for Galinsoga parviflora (a host rich in secondary metabolit

We assessed the feeding behavior, intake, apparent total tract digestibility, blood parameters, milk yield, milk composition and milk fatty acid profile in dairy goats fed diets containing increasing levels of whole cottonseed (WCS), specifically a control diet with no WCS and diets containing 120, 150 and 180 g WCS/kg DM. Eight lactating dairy goats were distributed in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 21-day periods. Rumination and total chewing time increased linearly with WCS inclusion levels. However, no effects on dry matter intake or digestibility were observed. Milk prod…

The increasing frequency of droughts and water scarcity has intensified interest in drought-tolerant plants and their by-products as sustainable feed alternatives for ruminants. This study assessed the partial replacement of alfalfa hay (AH) with camelina straw (CS) at 120 (CS12) and 240 (CS24) g/kg of DM in diets of Grey Shirazi lambs (n = 24, average body weight = 22.7 ± 1.7 kg). No significant differences were observed in dry matter intake (DMI), final body weight (FBW: 40.4, 38.8, 40.0 kg), average daily gain (ADG: 285, 260, 278 g/d), or feed conversion ratio (FCR: 5.2, 5.3, 5.1) across tr

Iron is essential for life, but its imbalances can lead to severe health implications. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient disorder worldwide, and iron dysregulation in early life has been found to cause long-lasting behavioral, cognitive, and neural effects. However, little is known about the effects of dietary iron on gut microbiome function and metabolism. In this study, we sought to investigate the impact of dietary iron on the fecal metabolome and microbiome by using mice fed with three diets with different iron content: an iron deficient, an iron sufficient (standard), and an iro

Pheromone communication is central to the life history of insect parasites. Determining how pheromones affect parasite behavior can provide insights into host-parasite interactions and suggest novel avenues for parasite control. Lice infest thousands of bird and mammal species and feed on the host's feathers or blood. Despite the pervasiveness of lice in wild populations and the costs they exact on livestock and poultry industries, little is known about pheromone communication in this diverse group. Here, we test for pheromone communication in the wing lice (Columbicola columbae) of Rock Doves

Malaria control interventions target nocturnal feeding of the Anopheles vectors indoors to reduce parasite transmission. Mass deployment of insecticidal bed nets and indoor residual spraying with insecticides, however, may induce mosquitoes to blood-feed at places and at times when humans are not protected. These changes can set a ceiling to the efficacy of these control interventions, resulting in residual malaria transmission. Despite its relevance for disease transmission, the daily rhythmicity of Anopheles biting behavior is poorly documented, most investigations focusing on crepuscular ho

Many blood-feeding arthropods use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to detect their vertebrate hosts. The role of chemical interactions in mediating the behavior of hematophagous insects and ticks has been investigated before but remains poorly understood in hematophagous mesostigmatic mites. The poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae is an obligatory blood-sucking mesostigmatic mite that feeds on birds and causes damage in poultry farms. We characterized the attractive response of D. gallinae to candidate VOCs previously reported from the odor emitted by living hens. We performed in-vitro choi

The mammalian system of energy balance regulation is intrinsically rhythmic with diurnal oscillations of behavioral and metabolic traits according to the 24 h day/night cycle, driven by cellular circadian clocks and synchronized by environmental or internal cues such as metabolites and hormones associated with feeding rhythms. Mitochondria are crucial organelles for cellular energy generation and their biology is largely under the control of the circadian system. Whether mitochondrial status might also feed-back on the circadian system, possibly via mitokines that are induced by mitochondrial

BACKGROUND: The lack of mothers' understanding and information can increase their anxiety and lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as pacifier-use, in their children.
AIM: This study aimed to perform pathway analysis of pacifier use by children whose mothers were hearing impaired or had normal hearing.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 116 Brazilian mothers (29 hearing impaired and 87 with normal hearing). Mothers were interviewed about socioeconomic factors and their children's pacifier use habits. They also completed the deaf or hearing versions of the Brazilian Beck Anxiety

N-Butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS) is a widely used plasticizer and hence there is potential for human exposure via oral routes. This work investigates the toxicokinetic behavior of NBBS in rodents following a single gavage (20, 60, and 200 mg/kg body weight) or multi-day feed administration (500, 1000, and 2000 ppm). In male and female rats following gavage administration, maximum plasma NBBS concentration, Cmax, was reached at ≤0.539 h. Cmax increased proportionally to the dose. Area under the curve (AUC) increased more than proportionally to the dose and was 4- to 5-fold higher in females tha

Circadian clocks coordinate physiological and behavioral rhythms that allow the organism to anticipate and adapt to daily changes in environment. The clock-driven cellular oscillations are highly tissue specific to efficiently fine-tune local signaling, manage energy use and segregate incompatible processes. In most peripheral tissues, food acts as the main cue that entrains the oscillations to external time. Food intake and energy balance are under control of endocannabinoid (EC) signaling. Despite this obvious link between the circadian and EC systems, evidence for their interaction started
