Optical properties of dissolved organic matter play pivotal roles in mediating trace metal forms in a mangrove-dominated tidal estuary.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) could alleviate aquatic metal toxicity by the altering metal speciation. The origin and compositions of DOM are sensitive to coastal vegetation, which may alter the DOM-metal interactions and thus the metal speciation in aquatic environment. This study aims to assess if coastal land covered by mangrove forests mediate dissolved fraction of trace metals by altering the DOM optical characteristics in a tropical estuarine lagoon ecosystem. In situ water quality sondes and discrete field samplings were conducted to inspect the linkage between the optical DOM properti

Effectiveness of an anti-inflammatory diet before in vitro fertilisation in women with endometriosis: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Endometriosis is a common, benign, chronic inflammatory disease with multiple consequences, from chronic pain to systemic comorbidities and poor quality of life. As it usually affects people of reproductive age, one of the most distressing consequences is infertility, which can be only partly overcome by medically assisted reproduction. Poor outcomes are, in fact, frequent adverse events. As no definitive therapy exists for endometriosis-related infertility, affected women often tend to try either complementary and alternative medicine or self-management strategies to improve the

Marrow-Derived Autologous Stromal Cells for the Restoration of Salivary Hypofunction (MARSH): A pilot, first-in-human study of interferon gamma-stimulated marrow mesenchymal stromal cells for treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Xerostomia, or the feeling of dry mouth, is a significant side effect of radiation therapy for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Preliminary data suggest that mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) can improve salivary function. We performed a first-in-human pilot study of interferon gamma (IFNγ)-stimulated autologous bone marrow-derived MSCs, or MSC(M), for the treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia (RIX). Here we present the primary safety and secondary efficacy endpoints. METHODS: A single-center pilot clinical trial was conducted investigating the safety and tol

Modulating rice starch physicochemical and in vitro digestive properties with ball-milled pea protein isolate: Effect of ball-milling time.

Strengthening starch-protein intermolecular interactions is critical for modulating the physicochemical properties of starch via proteins. In this study, pea protein isolate (PPI) was pretreated by ball-milling for different durations (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 min), and the effects of milled PPI on the physicochemical properties and in vitro digestibility of rice starch (RS) were investigated. Compared with native PPI, ball-milling treatment of PPI (40 min) reduced the swelling power and water absorption capacity of PPI-RS mixtures by 5.38% and 6.39%, respectively, while increasing their solubility b

Tuning the d-band center of spinel Mn3O4 via tetrahedral substitution toward enhanced oxidase-like activity for colorimetric detection of total antioxidant capacity in food.

Accurate and sensitive detection of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) is of great practical importance for assessing the overall quality and health benefits. Mn3O4-based nanozymes are promising candidates for high-performance colorimetric detection with the tunable electronic structure. In this work, tetrahedral atomic substitutions (e.g., Zn2+, Co2+, Cu2+) were employed to modulate the electronic structure and d-band center of Mn3O4 to enhance its catalytic performance and thus achieving sensitive detection. A systematic comparative study between the three substitutions and the d-band center-i

Traceability of black tea origin by synergistic application of electronic tongue and hyperspectral imaging combined with a Transformer-graph network.

BACKGROUND: The quality and commercial value of black tea are significantly influenced by its geographical origin. Traditional traceability methods for black tea are often time-consuming, complex, and inefficient. This study proposes a novel method for the rapid geographical origin traceability of black tea by integrating an electronic tongue (ET) and hyperspectral imaging (HSI) combined with an improved Transformer-graph fusion network (MSTNet). First, taste and spectral image fingerprints of black tea samples are collected by using ET and HSI systems, respectively. To address the complexity

Valorization of Ligusticum chuanxiong hydrosol via Eurotium cristatum biotransformation: mechanistic insights into flavor remodeling and functional enhancement.

Ligusticum chuanxiong hydrosol, a low-value distillation by-product, is usually discarded because of its offensive medicinal odor and pronounced bitterness. To overcome these sensory defects, this study employed Eurotium cristatum, a "golden flower" fungus renowned for flavor remodeling in traditional fermentation, to valorize this underexplored aqueous matrix. This represents the first systematic application of E. cristatum for hydrosol biotransformation. Under optimized conditions (39°C, pH 6.7, 7% inoculum), total phenolics reached 71.25 mg/L. Electronic nose and tongue analyses indicated c

Analytical strategies for identifying PDE5 inhibitors in damiana (Turnera diffusa) products.

The growing use of herbal supplements marketed for sexual enhancement has raised concerns regarding their adulteration with pharmaceutical compounds, particularly phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i). Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is commonly included in such supplements due to its traditional aphrodisiac properties. This study presents the development and validation of three analytical methods (LC-DAD, LC-Q MS, and FIA-ToF MS) for the sensitive detection and accurate quantitation of four PDE5i (avanafil, vardenafil, sildenafil, and tadalafil) in damiana-based food supplements. Natural occurrence of ustiloxin A and D in rice in China.

Rice, a staple food for more than half of the global population, undergoes multiple processing stages-such as harvesting, dehulling, milling, and polishing-before it reaches consumers. However, these processes not only alter the physical and nutritional characteristics of rice but may also affect the distribution and concentration of contaminants, thereby posing potential safety and quality risks. In this study, a total of 231 unhusked rice samples were collected from three provinces(Jiangsu, Anhui, and Fujian)in China between 2016 and 2018, along with 11 white rice samples purchased from supe

Metabolite-Pool Networks and Biological-Non-Enzymatic Synergy in Volatile Flavor Formation by Lactic Acid Bacteria in Fermented Foods: A Review.

Volatile flavor compounds (VFCs) are major determinants of sensory quality in fermented foods. In lactic acid bacteria (LAB)-containing systems, their formation reflects precursor metabolism, strain-specific metabolic capacity, environmental and community regulation, and non-enzymatic chemistry. This review develops an integrated precursor-pool-flux framework for LAB-associated VFC formation. Carbohydrate/citrate-, protein/amino-acid-, and lipid-related routes provide the principal precursor inputs, which intersect to different extents at three functional metabolite pools centered on α-keto ac

Functionalized WS2 Electronic Nose for Volatile Organic Compound Mixture Recognition via Chemically Informed Transformer Learning.

Accurate detection and discrimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in complex environments using chemiresistive sensors remains a major challenge, mainly due to overlapping responses (cross-sensitivity) and environmental interferences. In this study, we have developed a sensor array based on defect-engineered, tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets chemically functionalized with organic ligands for the detection of oxygenated VOCs. Each sensor of the array exhibits a distinct response to methanol, propanol, butanone, and formaldehyde, based on surface group-molecular interaction strength.

Measuring antioxidant capacity directly in emulsions: A new paper-based FRAP assay and comparison with its DPPH counterpart✰.

A paper-based Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay was developed to monitor the antioxidant potential of emulsions without prior extraction. The assay successfully quantified the antioxidant capacity of two hydrophilic antioxidants - ascorbic acid and N-acetyl-L-cysteine - showing an initially linear concentration-response relationship (R2 ≥0.934) and produced half-maximal effective concentration values consistent with literature. However, the assay exhibited significant limitations regarding lipophilic antioxidants and water-in-oil emulsions, a result attributed to the FRAP reagent'

Reverse Breeding: A Breakthrough Technique for Genetic Fixation and Hybrid Reconstruction.

Reverse breeding (RB), a novel plant breeding approach, helps to identify the parental homozygous lines for any uncharacterized but useful heterozygous plant that a plant breeder needs utmost. For this, genetic engineering at meiotic cell division, particularly meiosis-I, must achieve the right combination and complement homozygous parental lines for recreating the desired hybrid. In this technology, meiotic cross-over is suppressed to stop the recombination at the chromosome level in the selected heterozygous plants. The success of RB in crops depends on the efficiency and effectiveness of do
