Combined MEG and EEG suggest a limbic source network of the P3 including retrosplenial cortex and hippocampus.

The event-related P3 is evoked by most task-relevant or salient stimuli, but its neural generators have remained controversial, limiting the integration of P3 with functional neuroimaging. Here we reevaluate the role of hippocampus and retro-splenial cortex as potential generators of the P3. Combined magneto- and electroencephalography signals were recorded during a visual oddball paradigm. Observers were instructed to respond to rare targets of a deviant shape and ignore rare non-targets of a deviant color. Source analysis was based on noise-normalized minimum-norm estimates in an individual,…

Fears Worth Testing Out: A Systematic Review of the Neural Mechanisms of Treatment Outcome for Anxiety-Related Disorders.

With the advent of human neuroimaging, researchers were drawn to the idea that by better understanding the human brain, more effective mental health interventions could be developed. It has been more than 20 years since the first functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies were conducted to examine changes in brain activation with anxiety-related treatments and more than 60 studies have since been published in this vein. For the current review, we conduct a systematic review of this literature, focusing on adult studies using task-based fMRI to measure brain activation changes with ph

The compensatory effect of education as revealed by resting-state electroencephalographic alpha rhythms in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's disease: findings from an exploratory study.

Here, we investigated whether educational attainment influences the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying vigilance regulation, as reflected in resting-state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms, in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's (PDD) and Lewy body disease (DLB). Clinical, demographic, and rsEEG data were obtained from an international database, including PDD patients (N = 75), DLB patients (N = 50), and cognitively unimpaired older controls (Healthy; N = 54). Each group was partitioned into low (Edu-) and high (Edu+) educational attainment subgroups, matched for

Association between the functional brain network and antidepressant responsiveness in patients with major depressive disorders: a resting-state EEG study.

BACKGROUND: Recent neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that the heterogeneous antidepressant responsiveness in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with diverse resting-state functional brain network (rsFBN) topology; however, only limited studies have explored the rsFBN using electroencephalography (EEG). In this study, we aimed to identify EEG-derived rsFBN-based biomarkers to predict pharmacotherapeutic responsiveness. METHODS: The resting-state EEG signals were acquired for demography-matched three groups: 98 patients with treatment-refractory MDD (trMDD), 269 th

Disrupted intersubject variability architecture in structural and functional brain connectomes in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous condition characterized by significant intersubject variability in clinical presentations. Recent neuroimaging studies have indicated that MDD involves altered brain connectivity across widespread regions. However, the variability in abnormal connectivity among MDD patients remains understudied. METHODS: Utilizing a large, multi-site dataset comprising 1,276 patients with MDD and 1,104 matched healthy controls, this study aimed to investigate the intersubject variability of structural covariance (IVSC) and functional connectivity

Objective Assessment of the Cough: Listening to the Patient's Voice. A Narrative Review.

Despite its prevalence-affecting up to 10% of adults worldwide-objective measurement of the cough-one of the most common yet least quantifiable respiratory symptoms-remains challenging. Conventional descriptors, such as 'frequent' or 'severe,' are inherently subjective and poorly reproducible, limiting clinical interpretation and standardization. Over the past five decades, technological advances have transformed cough assessment from manual counting and provocation testing to automated acoustic monitoring and neurophysiologic imaging. Modern validated systems, such as the Leicester cough moni

Lorcaserin modulation of semantic drug cue-elicited effective brain connectivity in persons with cocaine and opioid use disorders.

Understanding the neural mechanisms of drug cue reactivity may improve understanding of therapeutic targets for substance use disorders (SUDs). Preclinical studies indicate that the serotonin (5-HT) 5-HT2A receptor (5-HT2AR) and 5-HT2CR systems considerably but oppositely impact relapse vulnerability. Specifically, 5-HT2AR antagonists and 5-HT2CR agonists reduce drug-seeking behavior and reactivity to drug cues. Our previous neuroimaging study showed that mirtazapine (a non-selective 5-HT2AR antagonist) can reduce the effective connectivity (EC) of the pathway from the anterior cingulate corte

Structure-function coupling alterations in adolescent depression correlate with neurotransmitter systems and cell-type-specific transcriptomics.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent major depressive disorder (AMDD) emerges during a period of significant neurobiological reorganization, yet its specific pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated structural-functional brain coupling (SC-FC coupling) in AMDD and its relationship with neurotransmitter systems and molecular profiles. METHODS: We examined 107 adolescents with AMDD and 78 healthy controls. Participants underwent multimodal neuroimaging (DTI, resting-state fMRI), clinical assessment, and cognitive testing. We analyzed regional SC-FC coupling abnormalitie

Neuroimaging pattern interactions for suicide risk in depression captured by ensemble learning over transcriptome-defined parcellation.

BACKGROUND: For suicide in major depression disorder, it is urgent to seek for a reliable neuroimaging biomarker with interpretable links to molecular tissue signatures. Accordingly, we developed an ensemble learning scheme over transcriptome-defined parcellations (TDP) to explore homogeneously parcellated brain patterns and their interactions. METHODS: 96 depressed patients without suicide attempt (SA), 86 with SA and 102 healthy controls were recruited for resting state fMRI scanning. Six genetic dimensions were created by homogenous transcriptomic delineations from Allen Human Brain Atlas.

Altered voxel-wise degree centrality of brain networks in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity. Previous studies have demonstrated that patients with CRS have an increased risk of emotional and cognitive disorders. Although neuroimaging studies have identified brain alterations in CRS, the specific etiology of these neurological changes remains unclear. This study thus examined the abnormal brain networks in patients with CRS through use of a voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) approach. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 26 patients with CRS and 38 healthy controls (H

Distinct Roles of the Premotor and Occipitotemporal Cortices in the Full-Body Illusion.

The sense of body ownership, a core aspect of self-recognition, has been studied using illusions such as the full-body illusion. Although the premotor cortex is considered central to body ownership in first-person full-body illusions, the occipitotemporal cortex-including the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and the extrastriate body area (EBA)-also plays a critical role in third-person full-body illusions. However, their distinct contributions to the full-body illusion remain unclear, partly due to the challenges of applying neuroimaging in such experiments. This study employed functional near-

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on ataxia: A case report.

Ataxias, a group of disorders characterized by impaired coordination, often lack effective treatments. Recent evidence suggests hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may promote neuroplasticity and improve brain function. However, its impact on the core symptom of ataxia remains largely unknown. We present two cases of patients with chronic ataxia of different etiologies who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Our findings provide preliminary insights into the potential benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for individuals with chronic ataxia. Two patients, aged 73 and 57, were presented with ataxi

Source reconstruction of clinical resting-state EEG reveals differences in power and functional connectivity in children with developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in reading and spelling. Despite lacking routine neuroimaging markers for dyslexia, recent resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) studies have detected atypical functional connectivity (FC) at the sensor-level in children with dyslexia compared to controls. It remains unclear if routine clinical resting-state EEG can be used to detect source-level differences between children with dyslexia and controls. Using retrospective data, we investigated 70 children with dyslexia and 50 typically develo
