[Bacterial flora in pharyngitis and tonsillitis].

The aim of the study was a microbiological analysis of pharyngeal swabs obtained from 158 patients with the diagnosis of pharyngitis and purulent exudates from the tonsillar crypts of 10 patients treated for chronic purulent tonsillitis. Beta haemolytic streptococci groups A, B, C and G were isolated from 30% of the patients. The most frequently isolated were Streptococcus pyogenes--12% of patients and Streptococcus group C--10.7%. Other streptococci were isolated less frequently: Streptococcus group B--44%, group G--2.5%. The majority of isolated bacteria belonged to potential pathogenic flor

Antibiotic Treatment Practices and Microbial Profile in Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Aim and objective Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a frequent complication of diabetes mellitus, impacting more than one in 10 diabetic patie … c treatment practices at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center. The predominance of gram-negative bacteria underscores the need for a polymicrobial, gram-negative-focused empiric treatment approach. Alternative antibiotics with broad-spectrum coverage and minimal nephrotoxicity, such as ceftriaxone, clindamycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin-clavulanate, an …

Cefepime shows good efficacy and no antibiotic resistance in pneumonia caused by Serratia marcescens and Proteus mirabilis - an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Many antibiotics have no effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative microbes, which necessitates the prescription of broad-spectr … ment of patients with pneumonia triggered by these two pathogens. RESULTS: Pneumonia was caused by Gram-negative bacteria in 115 patients during the study period from January 1, 2004, to August 12, 2014. Of these, 43 (37.4 %) hospitalized patients [26 males (60.5 %, 95 % CI 45.9 %-75.1 %) and 17 females (39.5 %, 95 % CI 24.9 %-54.1 %)] with mean age of 66.2 ± 13.4 year …

Sinusitis in neurologically impaired children.

The microbiologic features of infected sinus aspirates in nine children with neurologic impairment were studied. Anaerobic bacteria, always mixed with aerobic and facultative bacteria, were isolated in 6 (67%) aspirates and aerobic bacteria only in 3 (33%). There were 24 bacterial isolates, 12 aerobic or facultative and 12 anaerobic. The predominant aerobic isolates were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus (2 each) and Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae (1 each). The predominant a

Staphylococcal culture supernates stimulate human phagocytes.

Phagocytes play a major role in host defense against staphylococci as well as in the pathophysiology of Gram-positive septic shock. In Gram negative sepsis, the main mediator, LPS exerts its effects as easily suspendable mediator. In Gram positive sepsis the main mediator is still not found, therefore we studied the interaction of soluble staphylococcal products with phagocytes. Staphylococcus aureus supernates (SaS) were harvested from several laboratory and clinical strains that were grown to late-log phase. These supernates upregulated CD11b/CD18 expression on human neutrophils even in a 10

A Rare Bacterium Isolated in the Blood Cultures of an ICU Patient Monitored for Type 2 Respiratory Failure: Myroides odoratimimus.

Myroides species are rare opportunistic pathogens that are not part of the normal human flora and can cause infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. They are aerobic, non-motile, yellow-pigmented, oxidase-positive, gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria commonly found in environmental sources such as water and soil. In this case presentation, Myroides odoratimimus is reported as the causative agent of a bloodstream infection in a patient with a prolonged ICU stay due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), type 2 respiratory failure, and acute renal failure.

Examining the activity of cefepime-taniborbactam against Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli isolated from cystic fibrosis patients in the United States.

The novel clinical-stage β-lactam-β-lactamase inhibitor combination, cefepime-taniborbactam, demonstrates promising activity toward many Gram-negative bacteria producing class A, B, C, and/or D β-lactamases. We tested this combination against a panel of 150 Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) and Burkholderia gladioli strains. The addition of taniborbactam to cefepime shifted cefepime minimum inhibitory concentrations toward the provisionally susceptible range in 59% of the isolates tested. Therefore, cefepime-taniborbactam possessed similar activity as first-line agents, ceftazidime and trimet…

Decrease by naloxone of some electrocardiographic and biochemical changes following endotoxin induced shock in rats.

Administration of endotoxin, a lipopolysaccharide extracted from cell walls of gram negative bacteria, elicited alterations in various metabolic parameters and in the electrocardiogram of rats. Cardiac glycogen and serum glucose were decreased, while serum pyruvate and acid phosphatase levels were increased. There was initial tachycardia followed by significant bradycardia and elevation of the ST segment in the animals with shock. Erythrocyte count, haemoglobin and haematocrit were not changed after shock. Treatment with naloxone caused significant decreases in the metabolic and electrocardiog

Unidentified curved bacilli in the stomach of patients with gastritis and peptic ulceration.

Biopsy specimens were taken from intact areas of antral mucosa in 100 consecutive consenting patients presenting for gastroscopy. Spiral or curved bacilli were demonstrated in specimens from 58 patients. Bacilli cultured from 11 of these biopsies were gram-negative, flagellate, and microaerophilic and appeared to be a new species related to the genus Campylobacter. The bacteria were present in almost all patients with active chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer, or gastric ulcer and thus may be an important factor in the aetiology of these diseases.

Clostridial species in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis in patients with neutropenia.

The role of gram-negative bacteria in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis has been stressed. We describe a 21-year-old woman with chronic neutropenia with cyclic fluctuations who died of necrotizing enterocolitis due to Clostridium septicum. Seven patients with cyclic neutropenia and necrotizing enterocolitis have been described in the literature and in each case in which bacteriologic data were reported, a Clostridial infection was documented. Patients with cyclic neutropenia should be treated with antibiotics effective against Clostridial species when abdominal symptoms complicate …

5-Methylindole Potentiates Aminoglycoside Against Gram-Positive Bacteria Including Staphylococcus aureus Persisters Under Hypoionic Conditions.

Antibiotic resistance/tolerance has become a severe threat to human and animal health. To combat antibiotic-resistant/tolerant bacteria, it is of significance to improve the efficacy of traditional antibiotics. Here we show that indole potentiates tobramycin to kill stationary-phase Staphylococcus aureus cells after a short, combined treatment, with its derivative 5-methylindole being the most potent compound tested and with the absence of ions as a prerequisite. Consistently, this combined treatment also kills various types of S. aureus persister cells as induced by the protonophore CCCP, nut

Chemical Reduction-Derived Nickel Nanoparticles as Multifunctional Antimicrobial and Wound Healing Agents: Mechanistic, Biocompatibility, and Computational Insights.

The spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens and increasing chronic wound infection challenges necessitate new methods of therapeutic approac … surface functionality. NiNPs had concentration-dependent antibacterial action on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and the bactericidal action was validated by MIC, MBC, and time-kill kinetics. Both biofilm formation and mature biofilms were greatly inhibited, which explains their possible use in persistent infections. Mechanistic studies showed that there is a …

Computational approaches for modelling multidrug efflux pumps of the resistance nodulation-cell division superfamily.

Multidrug efflux pumps of the Resistance Nodulation-cell Division (RND) superfamily are integral membrane transporters that play a central role in intrinsic and acquired antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. Computational approaches have proven invaluable in complementing experimental studies by providing atomistic insight into substrate recognition, transport mechanisms, and inhibitor binding. In this chapter, we provide detailed protocols and tools for most common computational methods applied to RND efflux systems, including homology modelling, molecular docking, all-atom molecul…

Bowel Colonization With Carbapenem-Resistant Bacteria Is Associated With Short-Term Outcomes in Patients With Acute-On-Chronic Liver Failure.

BACKGROUND: Bowel colonization with antimicrobial-resistant bacteria has been associated with worse clinical outcomes in patients with cirrhosis; however, it has not been studied in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). We evaluated whether fecal isolation of carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacteria (CR-GNB) among patients with ACLF affects short-term outcomes. METHODS: Patients of APASL-ACLF (n = 339) were screened between June 2020 and December 2021, and 150 were included. Stool cultures were carried out at baseline and every 5 days thereafter until discharge or death. All…

Development of amphipathic derivatives of thymol and carvacrol as potent broad-spectrum antibacterial agents.

In the current study, to discover novel antibacterial agents, we designed and synthesized 72 carvacrol and thymol derivatives by biomimicking the structure and function of cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Many of the derivatives showed good antibacterial activity, and compound thy2I exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 0.5 μg/mL to 8 μg/mL. Compound thy2I could kill both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria via a membrane-targeting mechanism of action with a low frequency of resistance. In addition, thy2I ha…
