The effects of knowledge, attitudes, and significant others on decisions to enroll in a clinical trial on osteoporosis: implications for recruitment of older African-American women.

This preliminary study explored the roles of knowledge, attitudes, and significant others on decisions of older African-American women to enroll in a clinical trial involving estrogen and osteoporosis. Sixteen older African-American women (average age 75 years) participated in three focus groups. Twelve of the women had enrolled in the clinical trial and four, although eligible, refused to enroll. Discussions revealed that knowledge of osteoporosis and estrogen and expectations of personal rewards and group benefits from medical research appear to differentiate the women who participated in th

Risk behaviours and comprehension among intravenous drug users volunteered for HIV vaccine trial.

Out of 91 volunteers enrolled for the HIV vaccine trial, only 33 volunteers were eligible for vaccination. Of 33 volunteers recruited, 59 per cent of them had incomes of more than 5,000 Baht/ month. The median duration of drug addicts was 15 years (range 1-26 years) and 42 per cent never used condoms during sexual intercourse. As far as consent comprehension was concerned, all of them understood.

Dimensions of AIDS knowledge and risky sexual practices: a study of northern Thai males.

The relation between AIDS-related knowledge and sexual risk-taking for a sample of young men living in northern Thailand was examined. Data were collected during the fall of 1991. The sample of 1472 men includes university students, soldiers, store clerks, and laborers. Recent commercial sex patronage was variable among the subgroups, and consistent condom use among these recent patrons was far from universal. Several important misunderstandings among our respondents regarding the AIDS virus were identified. These misconceptions were most common among men of relatively low socioeconomic status

Sexual behaviour change associated with a college HIV course.

This study examined the effects of a multidisciplinary, multi-media college course, The HIV Pandemic and AIDS, on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of students. A quasi-experimental design was implemented using pre- and post-questionnaires administered to students enrolled in the course and to two control groups (N = 131) similar in age, gender, degree programme and class. At pre-testing, over 80% of students involved in relationships of four months or more reported having genital intercourse without a condom occasionally or frequently in the last year. Post-test results indicated HIV co

Factors related to planned and unplanned pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Given the efficacy of most contraceptive options, it is of concern that most pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Besides reducing the woman's and family's preparedness for parenting, unplanned pregnancies are at higher risk for inadequate prenatal care, perinatal morbidity, and significant postnatal problems. Little is known about the factors responsible for the high rates of unplanned pregnancy. METHODS: One hundred ten pregnant women were surveyed to examine factors relating contraception to unplanned pregnancy. RESULTS: Sixty-five percent of pregnancies were unplan

AIDS knowledge, attitude and behaviour patterns among university students in Ibadan, Nigeria.

This study investigated the knowledge, attitudes and personal behaviours of University students on AIDS. Two hundred and fifty students from the University of Ibadan randomly selected from eight faculties were surveyed. Results indicated that 58.7% of the subjects knew that AIDS is caused by a virus but 72.6% thought the disease could be spread through kissing, hugging or shaking hands and 48.0% believe they cannot have AIDS. Most students showed a high degree of aversion to AIDS victims while about a quarter reported having multiple sexual partners in the last five years. The results suggest

Adoption as an option for unmarried pregnant teens.

Adolescent parenthood reduces the opportunities and optimal outcomes for both mother and child, yet pregnant teenagers rarely consider adoption. This paper reports a qualitative study that explored the reasons this option is so rarely examined. Twenty-one unmarried pregnant adolescents and their significant others were interviewed twice to determine the meaning adoption has for them. Four phenomena were found to be pivotal to the their willingness to consider adoption: (1) societal sanctions, (2) low level of knowledge, (3) anticipated psychological discomfort, and (4) lack of support from hel

Conceptions of illness by children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: a cognitive developmental approach.

Investigated the conceptions of illness and accuracy of understanding about their disease for children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). 54 children between the ages of 6 and 17 were interviewed individually about various aspects of JRA, with results suggesting that accuracy and illness conceptions could be reliably measured. As predicted, children's understanding about their disease followed a developmental progression, with older children demonstrating a more sophisticated understanding of JRA than younger children (significant differences between age groups on 3 of the 5 questions).

Comparison of selected college students' and sexually transmitted disease clinic patients' knowledge about AIDS, risk behaviours and beliefs about condom use.

Selected college students and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic patients of the same age were compared for knowledge about AIDS, use of condoms, sexual behaviours and intentions to engage in various sexual practices. The Theory of Reasoned Action model was used to elicit beliefs about condom use and significant referents who influence condom-use decision making. Eighty-seven per cent of college students were sexually active. College students had significantly fewer sexual partners in a 30-day period than STD patients, but in a 6-month period the mean number of sexual partners was the s

Sexual attitudes and knowledge of high-functioning adolescents and adults with autism.

Interviewed 21 high-functioning adults with autism and 20 mildly to moderately mentally retarded adults without autism about sexuality and dating. Sexual knowledge and interest were assessed by a sexuality vocabulary checklist and a multiple-choice questionnaire. Group differences were found in experience, with more sexual experiences among the mentally retarded adults, but not in knowledge or interest. In both groups IQ was positively correlated with knowledge scores and males had significantly greater interest in sexuality than females. Implications of sex and group differences are discussed

Barriers to family planning services among patients in drug treatment programs.

In July 1989, family planning services were integrated into 13 drug treatment programs in Philadelphia. To obtain information on the family planning needs of women in drug treatment programs, baseline interviews were conducted with 599 women. Three-quarters of these women had had a sexually transmitted disease, and although they were in a drug treatment program, 41 percent had injected drugs in the previous month. In addition, 62 percent of the women who were sexually active in the previous month had not used a contraceptive. Twelve months into the program, seven focus groups were conducted wi

Risk of contraceptive discontinuation among adolescents.

This prospective study assesses a sample of adolescent oral contraceptive users for correlates of continued use of birth control. Data were collected by interview at both an initial family planning clinic visit and 3 months later. Half of the sample did not return to the clinic for follow-up. Among those contacted by phone, all had discontinued the use of a contraceptive, and 69% were at risk for an unintended pregnancy. Least likely to continue to use the pill were adolescents who perceived substantial health-related problems associated with oral contraceptive use, felt their own risk of preg

Abortion in single girls in Hong Kong.

Abortion in single girls in an increasing problem in Hong Kong. This paper is an attempt to look at the psychosocial factors in sexual behavior in a selected sample of girls. Of 100 girls requesting an abortion, 70% were educated to Form III level (grade 10 U.S. equivalent) and these did not come from broken or disturbed homes. The adequacy of their prepregnancy use of contraception was significantly and positively related to their level of formal education. These girls were all made pregnant by their boy-friends. Some aspects of their sexual behavior are described.

Medical student clinical cultural awareness in cancer care of sexual gender minority patients.

OBJECTIVE: Health disparities in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+), or sexual and gender minority (SGM) people are known. SGM people have higher cancer risk, but lower rates of screenings, resulting in a higher likelihood of late-stage disease. This study evaluates medical students' clinical cultural awareness in cancer care of SGM patients to identify gaps in education. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey distributed to medical students at a academic center. There were 38 questions on demographics, attitudes, and knowledge of SGM topics. Descriptive s

S.E.L.F.: Lessons in institutional cultural humility approach from an academic health center.

PURPOSE: Cultural Humility is vital for effective healthcare delivery as it fosters trust, open communication, and addresses health disparities. By engaging in ongoing reflection and recognizing patients' cultural identities, providers can create more equitable and inclusive care. Despite its importance, Cultural Humility is rarely taught systematically in healthcare systems, and even when introduced, it is often not assessed, making accountability and consistent practice difficult. These challenges arise from its focus on attitudes and interpersonal dynamics, which are less tangible and harde
