Fibroblast growth factor 23 in oncogenic osteomalacia and X-linked hypophosphatemia.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) cause autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Clinical and laboratory findings in this disorder are similar to those in oncogenic osteomalacia, in which tumors abundantly express FGF-23 messenger RNA, and to those in X-linked hypophosphatemia, which is caused by inactivating mutations in a phosphate-regulating endopeptidase called PHEX. Recombinant FGF-23 induces phosphaturia and hypophosphatemia in vivo, suggesting that it has a role in phosphate regulation. To determine whether FGF-23 circulates in healthy persons and whether

Brain age in chronic traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with greater 'brain age' that may be caused by atrophy in grey and white matter. Here, we investigated 'brain age' in a chronic TBI (≥10 years) sample. We examined whether 'brain age' increases with years post injury, and whether it is associated with injury severity, cognition and functional outcome. We recruited 102 participants with moderate to severe TBI aged between 40 and 85 years. TBI participants were assessed on average 22 years post-injury. Seventy-seven healthy controls were also recruited. Participants' 'brain age' was determined using T1-

Effect of advancing age on inter-frequency amplitude ratio of ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: The inter-frequency amplitude ratio (IFAR) is the ratio of the amplitude of 1000-Hz tone-burst evoked ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) to the 500 Hz tone-burst evoked oVEMP. Since IFAR is an amplitude-based parameter, and the amplitudes of oVEMP for different frequencies are differentially affected by ageing, IFAR could potentially be affected by the ageing process. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effects of ageing on the IFAR of oVEMPs. DESIGN: Multiple static groups comparison. STUDY SAMPLE: We recorded oVEMPs for 500 Hz and 1000 Hz tone-bursts from 270 hea

Dietary habits and barriers to healthier eating in Asian American adults, considering ethnic subgroups and immigrant generations.

There is a lack of understanding of the determinants of dietary habits in Asian American populations. We examined dietary habits and barriers to adopting healthier habits in Asian Americans, considering potential differences by ethnic subgroup and immigrant generation. We conducted an online survey of 1041 Asian Americans aged 21 years and older, inquiring about socio-demographic characteristics, dietary intake, and barriers to healthier eating. Most participants (64.5%) often consumed foods from their culture of origin. Fewer than half of the participants consumed vegetables (47.4%), fruit (3
