Phytochemical Profile and Biological Activities of the Roots of Caesalpinia bonduc and the Aerial Part of Heliotropium indicum.

This study investigates the phytochemical composition and biological activities of Heliotropium indicum and Caesalpinia bonduc, two medicinal plants widely used in traditional medicine in Benin. In ethnomedicinal practice, H. indicum is commonly prepared as decoctions or infusions of the aerial parts and administered orally or topically to treat inflammatory conditions, wounds, fever, and infections, whereas C. bonduc roots are typically used in decoction for the management of urinary tract infections, pain, diabetes, and reproductive disorders. The present research aims to generate preliminar

Potential utility of the new ISTH overt disseminated intravascular coagulation scoring system for mortality risk assessment of patients with sepsis, hematopoietic neoplasms, and solid cancers: a nation-wide database study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is characterized by systemic activation of coagulation pathways within the microvasculature, ultimately resulting in multiorgan dysfunction. The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) subcommittee has recently introduced the 2025 overt DIC scoring system for clinical diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical relevance of the 2025 ISTH overt DIC scoring system and its proposed cutoff values for the mortality risk assessment in patients with diverse underlying diseases. METHODS: Patient data wer

Diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis in haemato-oncology patients in a routine diagnostic setting.

Invasive Aspergillosis (IA) is a potentially lethal infection in high-risk haemato-oncology patients. Since traditional diagnostic methods have many inherent challenges, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) has been used to diagnose IA. This prospective study evaluated a commercial AsperGenius multiplex real-time PCR for its clinical utility in diagnosing IA compared with galactomannan (GM) testing serum samples from haemato-oncology patients with clinically suspected IA. A total of 107 patients were recruited between April 2022 and March 2023. Serum samples (n = 113) collected from those patients

Prognostic significance of geriatric assessment in combination with laboratory parameters in elderly patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The age-adjusted International Prognostic Index (IPI) is an important prognostic factor for patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). We investigated whether a geriatric assessment (GA) is of additional prognostic value in NHL. In this prospective cohort study of 44 patients aged 70 years or older with NHL receiving rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (R-CHOP), a GA was administered before the start of chemotherapy. GA was composed of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Groningen Frailty Indicator (GFI), Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline in the El

Comparison study of the eosin-5'-maleimide binding test, flow cytometric osmotic fragility test, and cryohemolysis test in the diagnosis of hereditary spherocytosis.

OBJECTIVES: Current guidelines recommend the eosin-5'-maleimide (EMA) binding test and cryohemolysis test for screening for hereditary spherocytosis (HS), and the flow cytometric osmotic fragility (FC OF) test was recently developed to replace the classic OF test. We evaluatedthe performance of the EMA binding test, FC OF test, cryohemolysis test, and the hemoglobin (Hb)/mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) ratio in the diagnosis of HS and assessed whether these tests reflect the clinical severity of HS. METHODS: A total of 153 patients with anemia (33 with HS, 40 with autoimmune

Seronegative antiphospholipid syndrome.

APS is an autoimmune disease that leads to arterial and/or venous thrombosis, recurrent pregnancy loss and persistently positive aPLs. Patients with clinical manifestations highly suggestive of APS but persistently negative conventional aPLs are classified as having seronegative APS. Ongoing research has revealed the existence of non-criteria antibodies proposed to be relevant to APS and that can be potentially included in the disease's classification criteria. We present a literature review on the most promising antibodies of this heterogeneous aPL family, which includes antibodies to a zwitt

Epitope-based matching for HLA-alloimmunized platelet refractoriness in patients with hematologic diseases.

BACKGROUND: For HLA-alloimmunized patients, platelet (PLT) concentrations are provided either at matched HLA-A and HLA-B loci or by serologic cross-reactivity groups (CREG) matching strategy. However, this method has some limitations. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In this study, the epitope-based matching (EBM) method was evaluated for selecting proper HLA-typed PLTs for patients with PLT transfusion refractoriness. Bead-based single-antigen HLA antibody detection method and HLAMatchmaker software were used to define the epitopes recognized by HLA-specific antibodies and to select compatible PLTs

[Role of daptomycin in the treatment of infections in patients with hematological malignancies].

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial infections in patients with hematological neoplasms carry high morbidity and mortality. Gram-positive microorganisms can cause more than half of the bacterial infections in patients with febrile neutropenia, especially bacteremias. Effective coverage against these infections in these hosts, especially the immunodepressed, is required. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the literature published in the last decade on infections in patients with hematological malignancies, with or without febrile neutropenia. Emphasis was placed on publications analyzing the processes caus

Platelet engraftment in patients with hematologic malignancies following unmanipulated haploidentical blood and marrow transplantation: effects of CD34+ cell dose and disease status.

Unmanipulated haploidentical blood and marrow transplantation has been developed as an alternative transplantation strategy for patients without an HLA-matched related or unrelated donor. In this transplantation setting, factors associated with hematopoietic recovery have not been defined completely. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of donor and recipient characteristics on neutrophil and platelet engraftment after unmanipulated HSCT. The study group comprised 348 patients who underwent unmanipulated haploidentical blood and marrow transplantation to treat hematologic malig

Thrombophilias and adverse pregnancy outcome - A confounded problem!

It was the objective of this study to analyse the influence of confounders, such as ethnicity, severity of illness and method of testing, in articles concerning the still moot relationship of thrombophilias to adverse pregnancy outcome (APO). Relevant case-control studies were identified using Medline and EMBASE databases between 1966 and 2006. Search terms were recurrent fetal loss, intrauterine fetal death, preeclampsia, HELLP-syndrome, eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, abruptio placentae, combined with maternal thrombophilias. Data was extracted from the articles per subgroup of APO rega

Transgenic rabbits with increased VEGF expression develop hemangiomas in the liver: a new model for Kasabach-Merritt syndrome.

Clinical studies have provided ample evidence that high (either systemic or local) levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are associated with several pathophysiological disorders, including hemangiomas. To investigate whether elevated VEGF expression could directly affect these disorders, we created a transgenic (Tg) rabbit model with increased hepatic expression of the human VEGF(165) transgene under the control of the human alpha-antitrypsin promoter. Tg rabbits exhibited marked hepatomegaly, with livers 2.5-fold heavier than those of control rabbits. Histological analysis revea

Effects of pulp mill effluents and restricted diet on growth and physiology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Juvenile female rainbow trout was exposed for 4.5 months (June to October) to two dilutions of untreated and activated sludge treated whole mill effluent from a pulp mill producing bleached ECF pulp. Two controls were used, on fed ad libitum and a second receiving 0.5% feed of the body weight. All effluent exposed groups were fed ad libitum. Mean weight of the fish was measured monthly. At the end of the experiment a number of physiological and biochemical parameters were analyzed in order to establish the physiological status of the exposed fish in comparison with unexposed fish that obtained

[Respiratory manifestations of leptospirosis. A retrospective study of 91 cases (1978-1984)].

Leptospirosis, an ubiquitous zoonotic disease, is a systemic infection usually producing fever with hepatorenal involvement, meningoenephalitis, and hemorrhage. Respiratory manifestations are less well known but have been described in certain regions such as Southeast Asia or the Reunion Island. From January 1978 through December 1994, 154 cases of documented leptospirosis were admitted to the South Reunion Hospital Center. Pulmonary involvement was observed in 91 of these cases (59.1%) with hemoptysis (37.4%) and radiological evidence of bilateral reticulonodular infiltration (40%). Extra-pul

A panel of ST2, Reg3α, Elafin, and TNFR1: Predictive value for acute GvHD and outcomes in hematological malignancy patients post allo-HSCT.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is an essential therapeutic modality hematological malignancies, but acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) persists as a leading cause of non-relapse mortality (NRM) . Cytokine biomarkers have already been used to predict aGvHD and outcomes. However, the standard guidelines for aGvHD biomarker panels remain controversial. We retrospectively analyzed the association of a biomarker panel (suppressor of tumorigenesis 2 [ST2], regenerating islet-derived 3 α [REG3α], Elafin, and tumor necrosis factor 1 [TNFR1]) in serum with the onset of 1
