Remarkable Survival by a Scuba Diver from an American Alligator Attack.

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a large (total length to 4.5 m [14.7 ft]) crocodilian common (estimated 3-4 million) in the southeastern United States. Attacks by alligators on humans are infrequent but increasing. We provide a case report of a scuba diver attacked by an adult alligator, describe the outcome, and discuss the injuries sustained by the diver. This attack occurred in the Cooper River of coastal South Carolina. The diver was seized by the right arm moments after surfacing and, in turn, hugged the alligator to avoid further trauma in the event of a death roll

Pregnancy in an SRY-Negative XX Developmental Sex Disorder Pig After Removing an Ovotestis.

A 2-year-old Large White research gilt was presented to the Comparative Theriogenology service at WSU for infertility. She was produced from the transfer of genetically modified embryos obtained via in vitro fertilization (IVF) that had been treated with CRISPR-Cas9 reagents to mutate the NANOS2 gene. Since birth, the gilt showed a so-called "skyhook" vulva and abnormal estrous cycles. She was artificially inseminated multiple times, starting at 5 months of age, with semen from a proven fertile boar, but never conceived. On transabdominal ultrasonography of the reproductive tract, a unilateral

Balancing the Treatment of Kaposi Sarcoma and Bullous Pemphigoid: A Therapeutic Challenge in a 63-Year-Old Male.

Kaposi sarcoma is a malignancy evolving from the lining of blood and lymphatic vessels. It is caused by the reactivation of human herpesvirus 8, often due to underlying immunosuppression. Classic Kaposi sarcoma occurs in Eastern European males greater than 50 years of age as painless violaceous papules to nodules. We report a case of a 63-year-old man with severe Kaposi sarcoma first diagnosed on the right medial foot with progressive involvement of upper and lower extremities. It was managed with monthly rounds of excisional cauterization, electrodesiccation, cryotherapy, and 5% imiquimod top

Mini review: Asymmetric Müllerian duct development in the chicken embryo.

Müllerian ducts are paired embryonic tubes that give rise to the female reproductive tract. In humans, the Müllerian ducts differentiate into the Fallopian tubes, uterus and upper portion of the vagina. In birds and reptiles, the Müllerian ducts develop into homologous structures, the oviducts. The genetic and hormonal regulation of duct development is a model for understanding sexual differentiation. In males, the ducts typically undergo regression during embryonic life, under the influence of testis-derived Anti-Müllerian Hormone, AMH. In females, a lack of AMH during embryogenesis allows th

Development and cross-sectional morphology of the recurrent laryngeal nerves in human fetuses.

The recurrent laryngeal nerve is a bilateral branch of the vagus nerve that is mainly associated with the motor innervation of the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. Despite its bilateral distribution, the right and left recurrent laryngeal nerves display unequal length due to embryological processes related to the development of the aortic arches. This length asymmetry leads to theories about morphological compensations to provide symmetrical functions to the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. In this study we investigated the developmental and cross-sectional morphometrics of the recurrent laryn

Source Localization and Classification of Pulmonary Valve-Originated Electrocardiograms Using Volume Conductor Modeling with Anatomical Models.

Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are a common arrhythmia characterized by ectopic excitations within the ventricles. Accurately estimating the ablation site using an electrocardiogram (ECG) is crucial for the initial classification of PVC origins, typically focusing on the right and left ventricular outflow tracts. However, finer classification, specifically identifying the left cusp (LC), anterior cusp (AC), and right cusp (RC), is essential for detailed preoperative planning. This study aims to improve the accuracy of cardiac waveform source estimation and classification in 27 patie

Developmental lung disease in a cat associated with high probability of severe pulmonary hypertension: natural history, histopathology and genetic analysis.

CASE SUMMARY: This report describes the diagnostic findings, natural history and genetic analysis of the candidate gene Forkhead Box F1 (FOXF1) in a young cat with developmental lung disease and high probability of pulmonary hypertension. A 1-year-old male entire Chartreux cat was referred for cardiac murmur investigation and exercise intolerance. Echocardiography identified a high-velocity tricuspid regurgitant jet with right-sided cardiac changes, supporting a high probability of pulmonary hypertension. No congenital cardiac shunts or left-sided cardiac changes were found to support a primar

Deciphering the inhibitory effects of trimetazidine on pulmonary hypertension development via decreasing fatty acid oxidation and promoting glucose oxidation.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a devastating disease characterized by vascular remodeling, resulting in right ventricular failure and death. Dysregulation of energy metabolism is linked to PH pathogenesis. Trimetazidine (TMZ), a selective long-chain 3-ketoacyl coenzyme A thiolase inhibitor, is critical in maintaining energy metabolism. Despite the indicated TMZ's inhibitory effect on pulmonary vascular remodeling in PH development, the integrated evaluation of the changes in biomolecules, such as metabolites and transcripts, that TMZ induces in the lung and heart tissues is largely unknown in

The Model of Interstitial Cystitis for Evaluating New Molecular Strategies of Interstitial Regeneration in Humans.

Given the recent evidence in the clinical application of regenerative medicine, mostly on integumentary systems, we focused our interests on recent bladder regeneration approaches based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and hyaluronic acid (HA) in the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) in humans. IC/BPS is a heterogeneous chronic disease with not-well-understood etiology, characterized by suprapubic pain related to bladder filling and urothelium dysfunction, in which the impairment of immunological processes seems to play an important

A Case Report of Dextrocardia with Situs Inversus: A Rare Condition and Its Clinical Importance.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare medical condition characterized by a complete mirror-image reversal of the normal positioning of the internal organs. Aristotle initially described situs inversus in animals, while Fabricius first characterized it in humans. Although the specific cause is uncertain, there is evidence of autosomal recessive and X-linked inheritance. Before seeking treatment for an unrelated ailment, many people with SIT are unaware of their distinct anatomy, as in our case. The presented case is a 30-year-old female patient from Central Ethiopia, presented to Hakim Gizaw T

Massive bone destruction in a human proximal femur from ancient Nubia.

Massive bone destruction in a human right proximal femur is described and differentially discussed in this case study. The individual was an older adult female buried at the ancient Nubian site of Tombos (modern-day Sudan) dating to the early Napatan/Third Intermediate Period (c. 1069-750 BCE). The right femur displayed a pathologic fracture with extensive lytic destruction and resorption of the entire femoral neck, most of the femoral head, and trochanters. Macroscopic and radiographic analyses revealed cortical thinning of the proximal diaphysis with new bone formation enclosing the medullar

Functional alterations of lateral temporal cortex for processing voice prosody in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

The human auditory system includes discrete cortical patches and selective regions for processing voice information, including emotional prosody. Although behavioral evidence indicates individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties in recognizing emotional prosody, it remains understudied whether and how localized voice patches (VPs) and other voice-sensitive regions are functionally altered in processing prosody. This fMRI study investigated neural responses to prosodic voices in 25 adult males with ASD and 33 controls using voices of anger, sadness, and happiness with vary

The Effects of Monaural Stimulation on Frequency-Following Responses in Adults Who Can Sing in Tune and Those Who Cannot.

Introduction  Musicians have an advantage over non-musicians in detecting, perceiving, and processing nonverbal (i.e., environmental sounds, tones and others) and verbal sounds (i.e., consonant, vowel, phrases and others) as well as instrumental sounds. In contrast to the high skill of musicians, there is another group of people who are tone-deaf and have difficulty in distinguishing musical sounds or singing in tune. These sounds can originate in different ways, such as a musical instrument, orchestra, or the human voice. Objective  The objective of the present work is to study frequency-foll

Thorax Dynamic Modeling and Biomechanical Analysis of Chest Breathing in Supine Lying Position.

During respiration, the expansion and contraction of the chest and abdomen are coupled with each other, presenting a complex torso movement pattern. A finite element (FE) model of chest breathing based on the HUMOS2 human body model was developed. One-dimensional muscle units with active contraction functions were incorporated into the model based on Hill's active muscle model so as to generate muscle contraction forces that can change over time. The model was validated by comparing it to the surface displacement of the chest and abdomen during respiration. Then, the mechanism of the coupled m

A Crucial Role of the Frontal Operculum in Task-Set Dependent Visuomotor Performance Monitoring.

For adaptive goal-directed action, the brain needs to monitor action performance and detect errors. The corresponding information may be conveyed via different sensory modalities; for instance, visual and proprioceptive body position cues may inform about current manual action performance. Thereby, contextual factors such as the current task set may also determine the relative importance of each sensory modality for action guidance. Here, we analyzed human behavioral, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from two virtual reality-based hand-target
