Rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rhythm (RR), plasma cortisol and prolactin (PRL) levels and haematocrit were measured at noon in male Creole goats during their habituation to shade, during sudden exposure to sunlight and then while they were kept outdoors. Data on the microclimatic environment, especially black-globe temperature (Tg), were recorded. On the day (DO) the bucks were put in the sun, the increase of RT and RR, characteristic of circadian rhythm, was amplified (RT: 40.84 +/- 0,23 degrees C vs 39.48 +/- 0.19 degrees C P less than 0.001; RR: 98 +/- 22 vs 35 +/- 3 respirations/min

Computed tomographies (CT) of 32 patients with suspected adrenal disease and of 20 patients without evidence of adrenal disease performed with an 18 s scan time scanner, were reviewed. The results of a study of the normal adrenals in the coronal and sagittales planes, with the electronical reconstruction, are presented. Surgical proof was available in 11 patients. We evaluated a new method utilizing saralasin to differentiate primary aldosteronism due to an aldosterone-producing adenoma from idiopathic hyperaldosteronism. The test is based on the marked difference in sensitivity to angiotensin II of aldosterone-producing adenomas and hyperplastic adrenal glands and the partial angiotensin II agonist property of saralasin in low-renin states. Two experiments were conducted to determine if confinement-induced delayed puberty in gilts was due to chronic physiological stress imposed by confinement housing. Ketoconazole, an oral antifungal, when given in conventional doses, transiently blocks testosterone synthesis and adrenal response to corticotropin. Higher therapeutic doses (ie, 800 to 1,200 mg/day), even once daily, caused more prolonged blockade. In some men, the serum testosterone concentrations were always subnormal. Bound and free testosterone values were equally diminished. Oligospermia and azospermia after prolonged therapy were noted. Impotence and decreased libido were found. Gynecomastia appeared more common than with lower doses. Depressed response to corticotropin was pronounced.

The authors administered the Carroll rating scale for depression to 100 patients with residual schizophrenia and found that 41 were also depressed. Of these 41 patients, 23 were given a dexamethasone suppression test; 7 (31%) failed to suppress cortisol. A matched control group, i.e., 23 patients with residual schizophrenia but without depression, suppressed cortisol normally after taking dexamethasone. The authors found no clinical differences between depressed patients with normal DST results and depressed patients with abnormal DST results.

Cerebral oedema, present or potential, is a predominant medical complication of neurosurgery. Interstitial irradiation using yttrium-90 (90Y) rods implanted by needle into the pituitary gland was used as primary treatment in 16 patients with pituitary dependent Cushing's disease. Clinical and biochemical remission was observed within three or six months in 13 and in the remaining three after a supplementary implant. There was no perioperative morbidity.
