Persistent joint pain and arm function in former baseball players.

BACKGROUND: Baseball has specific sport and positional demands that may modify joint pain compared with other sports. Persistent joint pain reduces function and is an underlying reason for seeking medical care. The pain and functional status of players after they stop competitive play are unknown. Such knowledge can assist clinicians in creating personalized physical examinations and interventions for baseball players as they transition to retirement. The purpose of this study was to (1) evaluate persistent joint pain and arm function in former baseball players and (2) determine whether playin

Functional hip joint centre determination in children with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Although functional methods determining the hip joint center (HJC) are becoming increasingly popular, no systematic investigation has been conducted yet to assess the reliability of functional hip joint calibration in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the most reliable way to conduct functional calibration motions for estimating HJC location in children with CP and movement disorders? METHODS: Twenty-two patients with CP were included in the study. A marker set for Plug-in Gait with additional cluster markers was used. Two functional calibration moveme

Joint hub identification for brain networks by multivariate graph inference.

Recent developments in neuroimaging allow us to investigate the structural and functional connectivity between brain regions in vivo. Mounting evidence suggests that hub nodes play a central role in brain communication and neural integration. Such high centrality, however, makes hub nodes particularly susceptible to pathological network alterations and the identification of hub nodes from brain networks has attracted much attention in neuroimaging. Current popular hub identification methods often work in a univariate manner, i.e., selecting the hub nodes one after another based on either heuri

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis mistaken as a temporomandibular joint disorder: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), is a rare systemic disease that if left untreated, it may lead to death within 6-12 months. This case report describes a 15-year-old female with a 14-month history of epiphora, nasal breathing difficulties, headaches, and jaw pain. The patient reported having various medical procedures attempted to address her symptoms. The classical presentation of strawberry gingivitis led to the diagnosis of GPA. Based on a multi-language search, this is the first reported case, that GPA is mistaken as Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD). CASE PRESE

A new role for joint mobility in reconstructing vertebrate locomotor evolution.

Reconstructions of movement in extinct animals are critical to our understanding of major transformations in vertebrate locomotor evolution. Estimates of joint range of motion (ROM) have long been used to exclude anatomically impossible joint poses from hypothesized gait cycles. Here we demonstrate how comparative ROM data can be harnessed in a different way to better constrain locomotor reconstructions. As a case study, we measured nearly 600,000 poses from the hindlimb joints of the Helmeted Guineafowl and American alligator, which represent an extant phylogenetic bracket for the archosauria…

Appropriateness of transthoracic echocardiography in preoperative elective joint arthroplasty patients.

Elective joint arthroplasty is a commonly performed procedure with postoperative cardiovascular complications occurring in up to 3% of elderly patients. Preoperative cardiac evaluation, including transthoracic echocardiography, may improve risk stratification and optimise perioperative outcomes in patients having non-cardiac surgery. This study aimed to investigate the frequency, indications, appropriateness and consequences of preoperative transthoracic echocardiography in elective joint arthroplasty patients. A one-year retrospective audit was conducted for patients who had elective joint art

The Joint Effect of Childhood Abuse and Homelessness on Substance Use in Adulthood.

Childhood abuse and homelessness are independently associated with substance use. Though childhood abuse and homelessness are strongly correlated, research on the joint effect of exposure to both traumatic life events on substance use is limited. Objective: To estimate independent and joint effects of childhood abuse and homelessness on substance use risk during emerging adulthood and adulthood. Methods: Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 12,288), we measured associations between exposure to physical or sexual abuse in childhood, homelessness in childhood

Ankle Joint Injuries Accompanying Fifth Metatarsal Base Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Fifth metatarsal base fractures are the most commonly seen fractures of the foot. Ankle sprains occur with inversion and plantarflexion mechanisms, similar to most fifth metatarsal base fractures. We sought to investigate the possible ankle injuries that accompany fifth metatarsal base fractures. METHODS: A hospital's digital database was searched for the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes for metatarsal bone fractures (codes S92.30 and S92.35) between January 2015 and January 2018. Thirty-nine patients with fifth metatarsal base fracture who underwent

Pre and Postoperative Analysis of Flatfoot Reconstruction Sparing the Talonavicular Joint.

Surgical correction of a flatfoot deformity is controversial. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the structural radiographic changes of the flatfoot deformity while maintaining the mobile adapter of the foot. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 56 patients that underwent this procedure comparing their pre- to postoperative angular changes during a follow-up period. The mean age of our study cohort was 53.6 (range, 20-77) years and mean follow-up period was 23 (range, 4-73) months. Radiographic union was achieved in 48 patients (86%). Forty-six patients (82%) had all required radiogr

[Traumatic isolated dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint is a rare injury].

Dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint should be promptly reduced when recognised in the emergency room. If closed reduction technique is unsuccessful, open reduction with the possibility of fixation should be performed. Currently, no consensus exists regarding the optimal post-reduction regime. We present a case report of a 30-year-old male who suffered a dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint during soccer. Closed reduction was successful, and the patient did not suffer from any sequalae later on.

Joint development recovery on resumption of embryonic movement following paralysis.

Fetal activity in utero is a normal part of pregnancy and reduced or absent movement can lead to long-term skeletal defects, such as Fetal Akinesia Deformation Sequence, joint dysplasia and arthrogryposis. A variety of animal models with decreased or absent embryonic movements show a consistent set of developmental defects, providing insight into the aetiology of congenital skeletal abnormalities. At developing joints, defects include reduced joint interzones with frequent fusion of cartilaginous skeletal rudiments across the joint. At the spine, defects include shortening and a spectrum of cu…

Locked Anterior-Inferior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocation: A Case Report.

CASE: We report a rare variant of sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocation, namely locked anterior-inferior dislocation, with unique clinical, radiographic, and intraoperative findings. In this variant, the medial clavicle was displaced anteriorly and inferiorly and locked in the manubrial-intercostal space, with corresponding mechanical dysfunction of the ipsilateral shoulder girdle joints. Symptoms unique to this variant included painful neck spasms and limited glenohumeral elevation. Nonsurgical treatment was not successful, and open reduction and ligament reconstruction resulted in correct…

Techniques for Injection of the Scaphotrapezium-Trapezoid Joint Without Image Guidance.

PURPOSE: Scaphotrapezium-trapezoid (STT) joint arthritis is one of the most common forms of wrist arthritis. Conservative management often involves corticosteroid injection. Despite this, there is a scarcity of literature on palpation-guided injection techniques for the STT joint. We aimed to determine a standardized palpation-guided injection method that is easily reproducible and poses minimal risk to local anatomic structures. METHODS: Six fresh-frozen cadaveric upper extremity specimens were tested. Access to the STT joint was attempted with dorsal, volar, and radial approaches. Fluorosco

Internal joint stabilizer for varus posteromedial rotatory instability of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Management of varus posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) of the elbow presents a challenging problem, sometimes requiring supplemental external fixation or ulnohumeral cross-pinning. A relatively new treatment adjunct for posterolateral rotatory instability of the elbow has become available with the development of the internal joint stabilizer (IJS) implant. However, this has not been studied for VPMRI because the implant is thought to be ineffective at treating this instability when placed in the usual manner on the lateral side of the elbow. We hypothesize that modifying th

Spatial deviations of the temporomandibular joint after oncological mandibular reconstruction.

Spatial deviations of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after oncological mandibular reconstruction are important to the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to clarify whether and how three dimensionally (3D) printed patient-specific surgical plates, and the preservation of the condyle or ramus, affect spatial deviations of the TMJ. A total of 33 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction via computer-assisted surgery were included. Regarding absolute deviations, patients in the 3D-printed plate group showed smaller TMJ deviations compared to those in the c

Safety and Efficacy of Medial Plate in First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP-1) is a recognized and effective procedure in advanced osteoarthritis of this joint. Fixation with a dorsal plate and a compression screw has been described as the most stable. Nevertheless, the frequency of revision procedures after MTP-1 arthrodesis has been reported to exceed 10% in some reports. The need for revision surgery is mostly related to the fixation material used and concern both its destabilization and a conflict between the implants and soft tissues. Therefore, there is still scope for developing new stabilizati
