A 54-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of a high fever and watery diarrhea. The chest radiograph on admission revealed a homogeneous consolidation of the left upper lobe. Laboratory findings included proteinuria, oligouria, hematuria, myoglobinuria, hyponatremia, and serum CPK elevation. On the basis of these findings, a tentative diagnosis of Legionella pneumonia was made. He was treated with sulbactam/cefoperazon and erythromycin, but his high fever remained and the consolidation shadow deteriorated. A 65-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a dry cough and pulmonary infiltrates. Chest radiograph and CT revealed mucoid impaction and consolidations. A 88-year-old male patient with G-CSF producing renal cell carcinoma is reported. The patient was admitted to our hospital complaining of macrohematureia. Sciatic neuropathy is an uncommonly diagnosed focal mononeuropathy. We reviewed the aetiology and electrodiagnostic features of 29 patients studied at the Neurodiagnostic Laboratory, Tan Tock Seng Hospital from January 1989 to April 1995. Stool samples from 836 cases with diarrhea and acute gastroenteritis from the Pediatric ward, Penang General Hospital, were examined for Cryptosporidium oocysts. A dimethyl sulfoxide modified acid fast technique was used for the identification of the parasites. 36 samples or 4.3% were found to be positive for Cryptosporidium. From 1987 to 1988, four patients with solitary, extramedullary plasmacytomas of the head and neck were seen at the Gunma Cancer Center Hospital. We studied 1,629 febrile patients from a rural area of Malaysia, and made a laboratory diagnosis in 1,025 (62.9%) cases. Scrub typhus was the most frequent diagnosis (19.3% of all illnesses) followed by typhoid and paratyphoid (7.4%); flavivirus infection (7.0%); leptospirosis (6.8%); and malaria (6.2%). We reviewed 162 cases of bacteriologically proved mycobacterial disease. Nontuberculous acid-fast bacilli were responsible for 27 per cent of the infections, a higher frequency than has previously been reported, and Mycobacterium kansasii and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare were isolated with equal frequency. Twenty dogs with gastric tumors were admitted to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital and Diagnostic Laboratory from 1951 to 1974. The tumors included 14 carcinomas, 3 lymphosarcomas, 2 leiomyomas, and 1 leiomyosarcoma. The carcinomas were categorized morphologically as carcinoma (5), adenocarcinoma (2), scirrhous carcinoma (5), and scirrhous adenocarcinoma (2).
