The laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) model in nonhuman primates has played a critical role in the development of new therapies for neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The widespread use of this model, however, has been limited by its high costs, mainly due to the lower efficiency of animal use. BACKGROUND: With the establishment of laser photocoagulation as a standard treatment modality for prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a dramatic reduction of cases with ROP blindness and severe visual impairment have been reported.
