We show how ideas and models which were originally introduced to gain an understanding of critical phenomena can be used to interpret the dynamics of epidemics of communicable disease in real populations. Specifically, we present an analysis of the dynamics of disease outbreaks for three common communicable infections from a small isolated island population. The strongly fluctuating nature of the temporal incidence of disease is captured by the model, and comparisons between exponents calculated from the data and from simulations are made. A forest-fire model with sparks is used to classify th

The association of fever and purpura should first suggest the diagnosis of fulminant meningococcemia, owing to the severity of this condition. Compromise of peripheral circulation (cyanosis, prolonged refilling time) is important to consider, because normal blood pressure is usually observed at an early stage of a septic shock in children and particularly in young infants. When this hypothesis has been eliminated, other causes of febrile purpura can be considered: meningococcal meningitis; measles or other viral diseases; non infectious causes include mechanical purpura, Schönlein-Henoch's pur…

19th.century Glasgow was an overcrowded city containing some of the worst housing conditions in the UK. Conditions were ripe for epidemics of infectious diseases and they came in waves causing high mortality particularly among the young. Diagnostic difficulties and ineffective therapy meant that little impact was made on these diseases during the first half of the period. Smallpox was the exception-vaccination of children reduced the incidence and mortality early in the century but subsequent public complacency caused it to return within a few years. Measles and whooping cough surpassed smallp…
