Functionalized biochar-metal oxide nanocomposites for the catalytic degradation of recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Modified biochar (BC) nano-compounds are very promising candidates for the accelerated degradation of reoccurring contaminants in wastewater treatment. The surface activity, structural repair, and dopant chemistry of biochar determine its adsorption ability and catalytic behaviour. Metal oxides such as Fe3O4 and FeS2 offer fast electron-transfer pathways that accelerate the redox-mediated transformations of heavy metal ions, while surface-engineered functional groups, particularly phosphorus moieties and EDTA ligands, provide tunable coordination environments that significantly enhance selecti

Joint Associations of Prenatal Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Metal Mixtures with Adiposity in Childhood and Adolescence.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and metals are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that have been individually linked to childhood adiposity, but their combined effects remain understudied. In the Project Viva cohort (n = 845), we evaluated joint associations of six first-trimester PFAS in plasma and five essential and six nonessential metals in erythrocytes with child and adolescent body mass index (BMI) z-scores and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) total and truncal fat mass indices. We used Bayesian kernel machine regression to evaluate joint associations of PFAS and meta…

Engineering Metal-Pocket Cooperativity in Single-Atom COF Nanozymes for Selective Cascade Catalysis.

Nanozymes have emerged as robust and scalable alternatives to natural enzymes, offering high catalytic activity and structural stability. However, reproducing the exquisite selectivity of enzymatic catalysis, particularly their ability to operate with high precision in complex reaction systems, remains a central challenge. Herein, inspired by the heme-pocket architecture and cooperative regulation in cytochrome P450, we report a nanozyme multilevel programming strategy based on a single-atom covalent organic framework (COF) platform constructed from heme-like metal-porphyrin nodes and linkers

Metal-free redox active covalent organic frameworks for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction.

Designing efficient, metal-free covalent organic framework (COF) electrocatalysts is a promising strategy for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their structural tunability and stability. Herein, we report two redox-active donor-acceptor COFs, TAPA-DHTD and TTT-DHTD, incorporating a thiophene-based dithiophenedione (DHTD) unit. Among them, TTT-DHTD exhibits superior ORR performance with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.82 V vs RHE, approaching that of 20% Pt/C (0.85 V) and surpassing most reported metal-free COFs. It also demonstrates excellent methanol tolerance and long-term durabil

Multifunctional metal-organic frameworks for direct photosynthesis of cyclic carbonates from gaseous olefins.

Ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) are important feedstocks in the production of commercial battery electrolytes and green solvents. However, their conventional industrial synthetic pathways rely heavily on energy-intensive thermocatalytic processes with costly epoxide reactants. Here, we report a class of multifunctional metal-organic framework photocatalysts (RE-BTTD-AC) that integrate oxygen (O2) activation, C-H bond activation, photothermal conversion and Lewis acid reactivity. They enable photosynthesis of EC and PC under ambient conditions with a sustainable, cheap and

Modulator-Tuned Cu(II) Metal-Organic Frameworks for Cooperative Sulfur Dioxide Capture.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), a typical industrial byproduct and hazardous pollutant, requires efficient capture for environmental protection and resource recovery. However, existing adsorbents face challenges such as unsatisfactory selectivity and performance degradation at elevated temperatures in complex flue gas environments. This study presents the judicious construction of isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Cu-L, Cu-L-FA, Cu-L-BA) using a pyrazine tetracarboxylate linker and copper ions, with formic/benzoic acid modulators retained to fine-tune adsorption performance. The resulting M

Data-Driven Exploration of Weakly Solvating Additives toward the Stabilization of Zn Metal Anodes.

The introduction of weakly solvating additives (WSAs) into aqueous electrolytes holds significant potential in promoting the desolvation kinetics of Zn2+ and reducing polarization. However, the current strategy of WSA screening primarily depends on trial-and-error experiments and theoretical calculations. This study reveals that, among various molecular features, the electrostatic potential minimum (ESPmin) exhibits the strongest correlation with the desolvation activation energy (Ea), demonstrating that ESPmin could serve as an effective descriptor for screening WSAs. Herein, we propose a dat

Remote-Controlled Release of Nitric Oxide by Plasmonic Waveguide Coated With Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Spatiotemporal control of photochemical reactions in living cells is a powerful approach for the precise manipulation of cellular functions and the interrogation of biological systems. However, conventional methods requiring direct light exposure often induce cellular damage due to the generation of reactive oxygen species and/or photothermal effects. Here, we present a novel intracellular delivery method using the plasmonic waveguiding effect, which enables the release of bioactive molecules within a single live cell without subjecting the target cells to direct light exposure. This is achiev

Semiconducting Mixed-Valence Metal-Organic Framework with CuI/CuIII Based on Diethyldithiocarbamate Ligands.

The unprecedented mixed-valent metal-organic framework (MOF) [CuI4CuIIIBr5(Et-dtc)2]·CH2Cl2 (CuBrEt-3D; Et-dtc- = diethyldithiocarbamate), which facilitates solvent desorption, was characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. CuBrEt-3D forms a three-dimensional framework featuring a planar CuIII center coordinated by diethyldithiocarbamate ligands, bridged by CuIBr units. This mixed-valent characteristic was confirmed through solid-state adsorption spectra, revealing a broad absorption extending to 2500 nm, attributed to intervalence charge transfer from CuI to CuIII. Remarkably, this

Alleviation of tannery wastewater toxicity in Spinacia oleracea through application of metal oxide nanoparticles.

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] rich tannery wastewater has negative impacts on physiological functions and growth of plants. We examined the effectiveness of foliar application of metal oxide nanoparticles including magnesium oxide, zinc oxide and iron oxide in mitigating chromium induced toxicity in Spinacia oleracea under 0%, 50%, and 100% tannery wastewater irrigation levels. The results reveal that chromium stress notably reduced plant growth, chlorophyll content, increased oxidative stress (H2O2 and MDA), electrolyte leakage and build up of Cr both in roots and shoots of plants. The stress

Linking trace metal dynamics to bacterial community and predicted metabolism in estuarine transition zones.

Ход выполнения metals regulate microbially mediated biogeochemical processes, yet field evidence remains limited on whether they act as micronutrients or metabolic inhibitors in estuaries. Here, we investigated the coupling between trace metal dynamics and bacterial communities along the salinity gradient of Pearl River Estuary (PRE) by integrating dissolved and particulate metal analysis, 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, functional prediction, and multivariate modeling. Most dissolved metals showed positive deviations from the conservative mixing line, whereas particulate metals were depleted particularly i…
