A high DQE water-equivalent EPID employing an array of plastic-scintillating fibers for simultaneous imaging and dosimetry in radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: First measurements of the imaging performance of a novel prototype water-equivalent electronic portal imaging device (EPID) designed for simultaneous imaging and dose verification in radiotherapy and previously characterized by our group for dosimetry are reported. Experiments were conducted to characterize the prototype's imaging performance relative to a standard commercial EPID and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed to quantify the impact of several detector parameters on image quality and to inform the design of a proposed next-generation prototype. METHODS: The prototyp

Validity of PROMIS in minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion: a preliminary evaluation.

OBJECTIVE Patient-reported outcomes are commonly used to evaluate treatment efficacy. Inefficiencies in standard measurement tools often prove to be a barrier to data collection. The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) was developed to overcome these limitations. This tool implements computer-adaptive testing, which enables the assessment of physical function in fewer questions than those required for "static" metrics. In spine surgery patients, moderate to strong correlations with Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) scores ha

Stochastic Signatures of Involuntary Head Micro-movements Can Be Used to Classify Females of ABIDE into Different Subtypes of Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Background: The approximate 5:1 male to female ratio in clinical detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevents research from characterizing the female phenotype. Current open access repositories [such as those in the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE I-II)] contain large numbers of females to help begin providing a new characterization of females on the autistic spectrum. Here we introduce new methods to integrate data in a scale-free manner from continuous biophysical rhythms of the nervous systems and discrete (ordinal) observational scores. Methods: New data-types derived fro

AQME: A forensic mitochondrial DNA analysis tool for next-generation sequencing data.

The feasibility of generating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data has expanded considerably with the advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS), specifically in the generation of entire mtDNA genome (mitogenome) sequences. However, the analysis of these data has emerged as the greatest challenge to implementation in forensics. To address this need, a custom toolkit for use in the CLC Genomics Workbench (QIAGEN, Hilden, Germany) was developed through a collaborative effort between the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System - Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFMES-AFDIL) and QIAGEN Bioinform

Comparative performance of reference-based metagenomic tools to identify species-level taxa among families of bacteria: benchmarking Mycobacteriaceae and Neisseriaceae.

UNLABELLED: Hypotheses concerning the ecology and evolution of bacteria commonly relate to the presence and abundance of species in various settings and conditions. Shotgun metagenomics may address these hypotheses, which previously relied on PCR or culture. However, the problem of determining the presence/absence of a given species of interest is not trivial, particularly when closely related species are present in the reference database or metagenomic sample. Reference-based methods for detecting species-level taxa mostly rely on thresholding of aligned reads or mapped k-mers, or derivative

Beyond segmentation accuracy: understanding model reliability and failure modes in ultrasound image analysis.

Segmentation of ultrasound images is complex, and although deep learning has improved automation, trust remains limited, restricting adoption. Interpretability methods may help reveal model behaviours and failure modes, supporting more trustworthy AI systems. A U-Net with a ResNet-18 backbone was trained to segment pipes in images of the Edinburgh Pipe Phantom acquired using ten ultrasound probes (N = 162). Performance was assessed using five-fold cross-validation. Predictive entropy and variance across 20 Monte Carlo dropout forward passes were used as approximations of data-related and model

Effects of a low-lipid diet on the gut microbiome and head kidney transcriptome of juvenile Chinook Salmon.

OBJECTIVE: Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. reared in production hatcheries are typically fed high-lipid, energy-dense diets to achieve large size and high body condition prior to release. In contrast, juveniles in natural environments tend to consume low-lipid, high-protein diets, and fish reared for research or conservation purposes are sometimes fed diets that are formulated to mimic natural diets and promote wild-like phenotypes. Understanding how these alternative diets affect fish health beyond growth and body condition could ultimately contribute to improving hatchery fish fitness. MET

A methodological framework for integrating generalisable deep learning and radiomics fusion model for early lung cancer detection across multi-centre imaging datasets.

Early detection of lung cancer remains one of the most effective strategies for improving survival; however, diagnostic performance is limited by variability in imaging protocols, scanner settings, lesion characteristics, and inter-reader interpretation. Deep learning (DL) models enable automated feature representation from medical images, while radiomics provides interpretable handcrafted biomarkers that capture tumour morphology, intensity, texture, and heterogeneity. When integrated into a clinical decision support system (CDSS), these approaches have the potential to augment radiologist de
