In the nearly 130 years since Trousseau first described migratory thrombophlebitis in cancer patients, thromboembolism has become a well-established presenting sign and complication of cancer. The coagulation system is activated in cancer and is further amplified by treatment with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Hypercoagulation is documented in virtually all cancer types, albeit at different rates, and is the second leading cause of death in cancer patients. The relationship between clotting activation and carcinogenesis supports the view of cancer as a hypercoagulable state and holds imp

Continuous vital sign monitoring (CVSM) is superior to intermittent manual vital sign assessment in detecting deviations, but alert thresholds have limited evidence, as a strong definition of physiologically normal variations are lacking. Consequences of too few alerts are missed detections of oncoming complications, and too many alerts result in over-alerting and over-treatment. This study aimed to describe duration and deviation of vital signs in postoperative patients without complications when monitored continuously. Adult patients admitted to the general ward after major surgery were incl

BACKGROUND: Research regarding the physical needs of professional golf players is lacking. With advances in wearable technology, it has become easier to analyze physiological responses such as heart rate (HR) to determine activity energy expenditure (AEE). The purpose of the study was to evaluate exercise intensity (EI) and AEE during 4 consecutive tournament's golf rounds using a popular wrist-based HR monitoring.
HYPOTHESIS: Wearable systems for HR monitoring can be used to provide an accurate estimate of energy expenditure.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.

OBJECTIVE: Photoplethysmography (PPG) monitoring has been implemented in many portable and wearable devices we use daily for health and fitness tracking. Its simplicity and cost-effectiveness has enabled a variety of biomedical applications, such as continuous long-term monitoring of heart arrhythmias, fitness, and sleep tracking, and hydration monitoring. One major issue that can hinder PPG-based applications is movement artifacts, which can lead to false interpretations. In many implementations, noisy PPG signals are discarded. Misinterpreted or discarded PPG signals pose a problem in applic

Real-world settings involve multiple interacting cognitive states such as mental workload, drowsiness, fatigue, and mind wandering, yet these are typically studied in isolation. A critical question is whether these states can be empirically differentiated given that they share overlapping behavioral and physiological signatures. We investigated whether task difficulty and sleep restriction produce dissociable effects across these states, and whether their response patterns reflect distinct underlying mechanisms or a common cognitive resource using a unified framework. Participants from operati

OBJECTIVE: High intensity interval training (HIIT) is recognised within many international cardiac rehabilitation guidelines. In the United Kingdom, however, similar guidance does not exist; moderate intensity training regimens have traditionally been advocated. The aim is to provide a pragmatic technical report for practitioners working in CR to implement low-volume HIIT programmes for people with coronary artery disease (CAD).
METHODS: We characterised the acute physiological response to low-volume HIIT and outlined patient inclusion and exclusion criteria, along with clinical and safety co

Sulfur dioxide and its physiological forms bisulfite (HSO3-) and sulfite (SO32-), along with intracellular viscosity, are involved in regulating many physiological processes and are closely related to diseases and cancer development. Therefore, developing probes capable of selectively responding to HSO3-/SO32- and viscosity is of great significance and practical application value for exploring the pathological mechanism of related diseases and realizing early biological detection. An aggregation-induced near-infrared emission-based Ir(III) complex probe named Ir-TH was designed and synthesized

The parathyroid cell is a vital regulator of extracellular calcium levels, operating through the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Despite its importance, the regulation of PTH secretion remains complex and not fully understood, representing a unique interplay between extracellular and intracellular calcium, and hormone secretion. One significant challenge in parathyroid research has been the difficulty in maintaining cells ex vivo for in-depth cellular investigations. To address this issue, we introduce a novel platform for parathyroid cell transplantation and noninvasive in vivo imagin

Although burns are an extremely rare injury during pregnancy, they place a significant additional burden on the body, which is physiologically adapted to pregnancy and therefore limited in its ability to respond effectively to stress. Due to the low incidence of burns during pregnancy, the existing literature is scarce. Case reports are mostly from third-world countries, and there are no official guidelines or recommendations. This case report describes a 30-week pregnant woman who sustained superficial dermal burns covering up to 45% of the total body surface area (TBSA) and received appropri

Heat and excessive solar radiation can produce abiotic stresses during apple maturation, resulting fruit quality. Therefore, the monitoring of temperature on fruit surface (FST) over the growing period can allow to identify thresholds, above of which several physiological disorders such as sunburn may occur in apple. The current approaches neglect spatial variation of FST and have reduced repeatability, resulting in unreliable predictions. In this study, LiDAR laser scanning and thermal imaging were employed to detect the temperature on fruit surface by means of 3D point cloud. A process for c

Recording electrophysiological information such as brain neural signals is of great importance in health monitoring and disease diagnosis. However, foreign body response and performance loss over time are major challenges stemming from the chemomechanical mismatch between sensors and tissues. Herein, microgels are utilized as large crosslinking centers in hydrogel networks to modulate the tradeoff between modulus and fatigue resistance/stretchability for producing hydrogels that closely match chemomechanical properties of neural tissues. The hydrogels exhibit notably different characteristics

Ketogenesis occurs in liver mitochondria where acetyl-CoA molecules, derived from lipid oxidation, are condensed into acetoacetate (AcAc) and reduced to β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). During carbohydrate scarcity, these two ketones are released into circulation at high rates and used as oxidative fuels in peripheral tissues. Despite their physiological relevance and emerging roles in a variety of diseases, endogenous ketone production is rarely measured in vivo using tracer approaches. Accurate determination of this flux requires a two-pool model, simultaneous BHB and AcAc tracers, and special consi

This study examines the influence of intermittent exposure to cold, hypobaric hypoxia, and their combination, in gut microbiota and their metabolites in vivo, and explores their effects on the physiology of the host. Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to cold (4°C), hypobaric hypoxia (462 torr), or both simultaneously, 4 h/day for 21 days. Biometrical and hematological parameters were monitored. Gut bacterial subgroups were evaluated by qPCR and short-chain fatty acids were determined by gas chromatography in caecum and feces. Cold increased brown adipose tissue, Clostridiales subpopulation and

In recent years, consumer-grade sensors that measure health relevant physiological signals have become widely available and are increasingly used by consumers and researchers alike. While this allows for multiple novel, potentially highly beneficial, large-scale health monitoring applications, quality of these data streams is oftentimes suboptimal. This makes alignment of different high-frequency data streams from multiple, non-connected sensors, a difficult task. In this work we describe a noise-robust framework to align high-frequency signals from different sensors, that share some underlyin
