Medial olivocochlear reflex interneurons are located in the posteroventral cochlear nucleus: a kainic acid lesion study in guinea pigs.

The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex arc is probably a three-neuron pathway consisting of type I spiral ganglion neurons, reflex interneurons in the cochlear nucleus, and MOC neurons that project to the outer hair cells of the cochlea. We investigated the identity of MOC reflex interneurons in the cochlear nucleus by assaying their regional distribution using focal injections of kainic acid. Our reflex metric was the amount of change in the distortion product otoacoustic emission (at 2f(1)-f(2)) just after onset of the primary tones. This metric for MOC reflex strength has been shown to depen

DIA-PINN: A physics-informed machine learning method to estimate global intrinsic diastolic chamber properties of the left ventricle from pressure-volume data.

Pressure-volume (PV) loop analysis remains the gold standard for assessing the intrinsic global diastolic properties of the left ventricle (LV). Traditional fitting techniques rely on local, phase-constrained fittings and are limited due to their sensitivity to noise, landmark selection, violation of assumptions, and nonconvergence. We aimed to develop and validate DIA-, a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework capable of calculating intrinsic diastolic properties of the LV from measured instantaneous PV data, combining mechanistic interpretability with machine learning flexibility.

Graph-Driven Simultaneous and Proportional Estimation of Wrist Angle and Grasp Force via High-Density EMG.

Myoelectric prostheses are generally unable to accurately control the position and force simultaneously, prohibiting natural and intuitive human-machine interaction. This issue is attributed to the limitations of myoelectric interfaces in effectively decoding multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DoF) kinematic and kinetic information. We thus propose a novel multi-task, spatial-temporal model driven by graphical high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) for simultaneous and proportional control of wrist angle and grasp force. Twelve subjects were recruited to perform three multi-DoF movements, includin

Deep learning is widely applicable to phenotyping embryonic development and disease.

Genome editing simplifies the generation of new animal models for congenital disorders. However, the detailed and unbiased phenotypic assessment of altered embryonic development remains a challenge. Here, we explore how deep learning (U-Net) can automate segmentation tasks in various imaging modalities, and we quantify phenotypes of altered renal, neural and craniofacial development in Xenopus embryos in comparison with normal variability. We demonstrate the utility of this approach in embryos with polycystic kidneys (pkd1 and pkd2) and craniofacial dysmorphia (six1). We highlight how in toto

Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Networks for the Automatic Quantification of Muscle Fat Infiltration Following Whiplash Injury.

Muscle fat infiltration (MFI) of the deep cervical spine extensors has been observed in cervical spine conditions using time-consuming and rater-dependent manual techniques. Deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) models have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in segmentation tasks. Here, we train and test a CNN for muscle segmentation and automatic MFI calculation using high-resolution fat-water images from 39 participants (26 female, average = 31.7 ± 9.3 years) 3 months post whiplash injury. First, we demonstrate high test reliability and accuracy of the CNN compared to manua

Automation of Detection of Cervical Cancer Using Convolutional Neural Networks.

Classification of digital cervical images acquired during visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) is an important step in automated image-based cervical cancer detection. Many algorithms have been developed for classification of cervical images based on extracting mathematical features and classifying these images. Deciding the suitability of a feature and learning the algorithm is a complex task. On the other hand, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) self-learn most suitable hierarchical features from the raw input image. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of using a shallow laye

Adaptive control of movement for neuromuscular stimulation-assisted therapy in a rodent model.

Neuromotor therapy after spinal cord or brain injury often attempts to utilize activity-dependent plasticity to promote functional recovery. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation that activates paralyzed or paretic muscles may enhance passive assistance therapy by activating more muscle mass and enriching the sensory pattern with appropriately timed muscle spindle activation. To enable studies of activity-dependent plasticity, a rodent model for stimulation-assisted locomotor therapy was developed previously. To be effective, however, such a system must allow lengthy sessions of repetitive move

Significant reduction in the rate of false-negative cervical smears with neural network-based technology (PAPNET Testing System).

False-negative cervical Pap smears may lead to disability or death from carcinoma of the uterine cervix. New computer technology has led to the development of an interactive, neural network-based vision instrument to increase the accuracy of cervical smear screening. The instrument belongs to a new class of medical devices designed to provide computer-aided diagnosis (CADx). To test the instrument's performance, 487 archival negative smears (index smears) from 228 women with biopsy-documented high-grade precancerous lesions or invasive cervical carcinoma (index women) were retrieved from the f

Robust Fastener Detection Based on Force and Vision Algorithms in Robotic (Un)Screwing Applications.

This article addresses how to tackle one of the most demanding tasks in manufacturing and industrial maintenance sectors: using robots with a novel and robust solution to detect the fastener and its rotation in (un)screwing tasks over parallel surfaces with respect to the tool. To this end, the vision system is based on an industrial camera with a dynamic exposure time, a tunable liquid crystal lens (TLCL), and active near-infrared reflectance (NIR) illumination. Its camera parameters, combined with a fixed value of working distance (WD) and variable or constant field of view (FOV), make it po
