Among a series of 740 spinal tumours treated in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Nordstadt Hospital in Hannover, Germany, between September 1977 and December 1996, 106 spinal metastases in 101 patients were operated on. We evaluated the pre- and postoperative neurological state of 3 patients with lumbar intradural lipoma. Total resection of the lipoma in the cauda equina was impossible, and partial resection and expansive laminoplasty was carried out. Subsequent neural involvement may depend on the duration of symptoms rather than the extent of resection. Expansive laminoplasty is appropriate in these circumstances since decompression is combined with spinal stabilization.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) epidermoids, although of benign nature, are of considerable neurosurgical interest because of their close proximity and adherence to the cranial nerves and the brain stem. We describe our experience and attempt to correlate the final outcomes with the extent of surgical removal.

Stereotypies are patterned, repetitive, purposeless movements that are performed the same way each time. They are commonly seen in individuals with autism, schizophrenia, or mental retardation, and also occur as a feature of tardive dyskinesia and as movements in those with akathisia. We describe a father and daughter with early-onset benign limb-girdle myopathy and contractures of elbows and hands, resembling Bethlem disease. Muscle biopsy showed a pattern of dystrophy with non specific mitochondrial changes. In both patients there was unusual facial muscle weakness. We discuss the nosologic position of Bethlem myopathy and suggest that facial involvement may be an additional feature of this disease.
