Vertebrobasilar spasm: a significant cause of neurological deficit in head injury.

Cerebral vasospasm in the anterior circulation has been recognized as a significant factor in the sequelae of head injury; however, vertebrobasilar spasm resulting from trauma has received much less attention. In the past year we have observed six patients where spasm in the major vessels of the posterior circulation was primarily or in part responsible for the neurological deficit. In such cases, the neurological examination may suggest a supratentorial mass with herniation and, in three of our cases, burr holes or carotid angiography were performed first. However, in every instance neurologi

[Neurological complications during therapy with 17 MDCAA (author's transl)].

A case of a 39 years old woman on therapy with Monodicloroacetilajmaline for repetitive crises of Ventricular Tachycardia is shown. We have observed neurological symptoms by central compromission of 3rd, 4th, 6th pair of cranial nerves, cutaneous symptoms and a neurodisletic crisis. We particularly analyse the dosage of the drug in relation to the progression of symptoms and also the possible pathogenesis. Symptoms disappeared completely about 20 days after withdrawal of the drug.

Neurological and electroencephalographic changes in newborns treated with prostaglandins E1 and E2.

Six newborns with obstructive right heart lesions were examined neurologically and electroencephalographically during treatment with prostaglandin (PG) E1 or E2 given to maintain patency of the ductus arteriosus and to increase pulmonary blood flow. PG was administered intravenously or intraarterially in the aortic isthmus proximal to the ductus arteriosus. Besides a rise in arterial oxygen saturation, all patients had some sign of central nervous system involvement. The electroencephalogram showed minor changes suggestive of sedation. In addition, three patients in whom PG was given intraveno

The crossed extensor hallucis response in neurological disorders; an electromyographic analysis.

The electromyographic activity in several leg muscles during the elicitation of "the crossed up-going toe sign" (CUT) was studied in patients and compared with that obtained in connection with the Babinski sign and in normal subjects. The results indicate that the patterns of activation and the responsible pathways are different for the CUT and Babinski signs. The difference between the normal subjects and the CUT positive patient is a matter of quantitative difference of coactivation of distal leg muscles during the test procedure rather than a change of reflex patterns.

Liver and brain thiamin depletion and neurologic signs in pigeon athiaminosis.

Blood pyruvate and free and phosphorylated thiamin contents of liver and brain were measured in pigeons during diatary thiamin deficiency. Neurologic signs (opisthotonus and ataxia) appeared in the course of thiamin deficiency or did not appear at all during the entire athiaminosis period. As compared to respective controls, which never exhibited any neurologic abnormalities in spite of thiamin deficiency, the symptomatic animals had a higher pyruvate level in blood and a significantly lower phosphorylated thiamin content in both liver and brain. A hypothesis on relationship between phosphoryl

The management of thoracic and thoraco-lumbar injuries of the spine with neurological involvement.

The results of treatment of injuries of the thoracic and thoraco-lumbar spine with neurological involvement have been reviewed in a retrospective study of 115 patients, of whom eighty-nine received conservative and twenty-six surgical treatment. Operation was reserved, in general, for patients with irreducible dislocations and incomplete neurological lesions, open reduction and internal fixation being the commonest procedure. Only three patients required a delayed spinal fusion for suspected instability after a period of conservative treatment. On the other hand, ten patients, eight of whom ha

The late neurological, psychological, and social aspects of severe traumatic coma.

Thirty patients who had survived a heavy head trauma and a post-traumatic coma, lasting for more than one week, were investigated 8 to 14 years after the trauma. The patients have been followed up from a social, psychological, and neurological point of view. Fifty per cent of these patients are considered to be well rehabilitated. All the investigated patients showed slight to severe reduction in mental capacity. Eighty per cent of the patients had neurological defects which were not as important with respect to social rehabilitation as was the mental capacity reduction.

A study of certain traits accompanying some inherted neurological disorders.

Feeblemindedness, dementia, mental disorders, and epilepsy, as well as optic atrophy, tapeto-retinal degenerations, cataract, ophthalmoplegias, and neural hearing loss were found more frequently in patients suffering from hereditary ataxias (HA) and allied disorders than in the general population. Mental disorders and squints, and in certain instances also ocular myopathy, feeblemindedness, and cataract were found also in non-HA family members. These traits were particularly frequent in subjects with minor neurological signs previously defined as having an "unspecific neuropathy" (Un), and bel
