Lifestyle in Emerging Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

Emerging adulthood is a transitional stage with significant lifestyle changes, making it especially challenging for those living with type 1 diabetes mellitus. This systematic review synthesizes qualitative research to explore how emerging adulthood (18-29 years) influences lifestyle behaviors in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus. CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Global Health, Nursing & Allied Health Premium, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and WOS were searched for original qualitative studies addressing the lifestyle of 18-31-year-olds with type 1 diabetes mellitus, published between January 201

Perceived Negative Effects of Tic Management Strategies in Adults With Tic Disorders.

Behavior therapy is a well-established and empirically supported treatment for tic disorders (TDs). However, concerns have been expressed about the negative effects of behavioral interventions, such as tic worsening, tic substitution, and excessive effort. This study explored perceived negative effects of tic management strategies in adults with TDs and predictors of these experiences. Participants (N = 72) completed semi-structured interviews 11 years after receiving behavior therapy or supportive therapy in a randomized clinical trial. We examined responses to interview questions about manag

Depression in persons with disabilities: a scoping review.

Individuals with disabilities are more vulnerable to depression development than the general population. This study sought to map the evidence on current knowledge of depression, intervention strategies, and assessment tools among people with disabilities. This review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review methodology framework. An electronic search was performed on four English databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. The original search returned 1802 results, with 1,116 from Web of Science, 626 from PubMed, 25 from Cochrane, and 35 from PsycINF

Thymoma-Related Chest Pain and Dyspnea in a Middle-Aged Caucasian Female With Myasthenia Gravis and Good's Syndrome: A Case Report.

Thymomas are rare tumors originating from thymic tissue, often associated with various paraneoplastic syndromes that can pose significant clinical management challenges. Myasthenia gravis, one of the most common paraneoplastic syndromes linked to thymomas, is characterized by autoantibodies targeting the neuromuscular junction, leading to muscle weakness exacerbated by repetitive use. Good's syndrome, an adult-onset immunodeficiency associated with thymomas, results in hypogammaglobulinemia and susceptibility to opportunistic infections, which can be life-threatening. We present the case of a

The Use of the Voice Trainer App for Vocal Control in People with a Degenerative Ataxia: A Pilot Intervention Study.

Dysarthria is disabling in persons with degenerative ataxia. There is limited evidence for speech therapy interventions. In this pilot study, we used the Voice trainer app, which was originally developed for patients with Parkinson's disease, as a feedback tool for vocal control. We hypothesized that patients with ataxic dysarthria would benefit from the Voice trainer app to better control their loudness and pitch, resulting in a lower speaking rate and better intelligibility. This intervention study consisted of five therapy sessions of 30 min within 3 weeks using the principles of the Pitch

Calibration transfer between NIR instruments using optimally predictive calibration subsets.

In this study, a new approach for the selection of informative standardization samples from the original calibration set for the transfer of a calibration model between NIR instruments is proposed and evaluated. First, a calibration model is developed, after variable selection by the Final Complexity Adapted Models (FCAM) method, using the significance of the PLS regression coefficients (FCAM-SIG) as selection criterion. Then, the resulting model is used for the selection of the best fitting subset of calibration samples with optimally predictive ability, called the optimally predictive calibr

Ocular Metastatic Tumor in a Patient With Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

While orbital floor metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been reported, ocular (eyeball) metastasis is exceedingly rare. Most ocular metastases originate from breast or lung cancer. In this article, we present the case of a 65-year-old man diagnosed with HCC with central necrosis (cT3N0M0, stage III) based on characteristic imaging findings. As liver resection was not indicated, biliary drainage, ascites control, and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) were performed. On day 62 of admission, he developed right-sided visual disturbance accompanied by severe pain. A fun

Recent Advances in Artificial Anion Channels and Their Selectivity.

Nature performs critical physiological functions using a series of structurally and functionally diverse membrane proteins embedded in cell membranes, in which native ion protein channels modify the electrical potential inside and outside the cell membrane through charged ion movements. Consequently, the cell responds to external stimuli, playing an essential role in various life activities, such as nerve excitation conduction, neurotransmitter release, muscle movement, and control of cell differentiation. Supramolecular artificial channels, which mimic native protein channels in structure and

Evaluating the web as a source of information for patients with chest wall deformities: insights into engagement and disparities.

BACKGROUND: Recent data highlight the internet's pivotal role as the primary information source for patients. In this study, we emulate a patient's/caregiver's quest for online information concerning chest deformities and assess the quality of available information. METHODS: We conducted an internet search using combination of the terms "pectus excavatum," "pectus excavatum surgery," "funnel chest," "pectus excavatum repair" and identified the first 100 relevant websites from the three most popular search engines: Google, Yahoo, and Bing. These websites were evaluated using the modified Ensur

Surgical Resection of a Pneumothorax in an Adult Patient With a History of Wilson-Mikity Syndrome Diagnosed in Childhood.

Wilson-Mikity syndrome (WMS) is a rare condition characterized by various respiratory and pulmonary abnormalities in neonates and infants. However, the diagnosis is based on the findings of physiological tests, such as respiratory function tests. Reports describing the histopathological features of WMS are limited. The patient was a 22-year-old woman with a history of WMS. She had been on a ventilator for the first three months of life due to pulmonary hypertension after early delivery at 24 weeks of gestation and required oxygen therapy until three years of age. One month before presenting at

Unveiling the link: exploring muscle oxygen saturation in fibromyalgia and its implications for symptomatology and therapeutic strategies.

Fibromyalgia, characterized as a complex chronic pain syndrome, presents with symptoms of pervasive musculoskeletal pain, significant fatigue, and pronounced sensitivity at specific anatomical sites. Despite extensive research efforts, the origins of fibromyalgia remain enigmatic. This narrative review explores the intricate relationship between muscle oxygen saturation and fibromyalgia, positing that disruptions in the oxygenation processes within muscle tissues markedly influence the symptom profile of this disorder. Muscle oxygen saturation, crucial for muscle function, has been meticulousl

Autoimmunity in thymic epithelial tumors: a not yet clarified pathologic paradigm associated with several unmet clinical needs.

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are rare mediastinal cancers originating from the thymus, classified in two main histotypes: thymoma and thymic carcinoma (TC). TETs affect a primary lymphoid organ playing a critical role in keeping T-cell homeostasis and ensuring an adequate immunological tolerance against "self". In particular, thymomas and not TC are frequently associated with autoimmune diseases (ADs), with Myasthenia Gravis being the most common AD present in 30% of patients with thymoma. This comorbidity, in addition to negatively affecting the quality and duration of patients' life, redu

A rare case of teratoma in the right atrium: A case report study.

INTRODUCTION: Teratomas are neoplasms originating from embryonic tissues, characterized by a diverse composition of cells from all three germ layers in varying ratios. Rarely reported in the heart, we present here a rare case of a teratoma in the right atrium of a newborn. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-h-old newborn was referred for a mild heart murmur. An echocardiogram revealed a 6 × 9 mm mass in the right atrium, attached to the interatrial septum. The mass caused mild tricuspid regurgitation without any significant pressure gradient. Surgery to remove the mass was successful. Pathological exami

Wound closure techniques after wide excision for hidradenitis suppurativa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects intertriginous skin areas, clinically characterized by recurrent inflamed nodules, abscesses, sinus tracts, and severe scars. Systemic treatments may provide temporary relief, while wide surgical excision offers prolonged disease-free periods. We evaluated the most efficient wound closure methods following wide excision of HS lesions in terms of recurrence, functionality, and quality of life. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov, adhering to the PRISMA 2020 c

Artificial intelligence-based prediction models for acute myeloid leukemia using real-life data: A DATAML registry study.

We designed artificial intelligence-based prediction models (AIPM) using 52 diagnostic variables from 3687 patients included in the DATAML registry treated with intensive chemotherapy (IC, N = 3030) or azacitidine (AZA, N = 657) for an acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A neural network called multilayer perceptron (MLP) achieved a prediction accuracy for overall survival (OS) of 68.5% and 62.1% in the IC and AZA cohorts, respectively. The Boruta algorithm could select the most important variables for prediction without decreasing accuracy. Thirteen features were retained with this algorithm in the

Vasospastic angina: a review on diagnostic approach and management.

Vasospastic angina (VSA) refers to chest pain experienced as a consequence of myocardial ischaemia caused by epicardial coronary spasm, a sudden narrowing of the vessels responsible for an inadequate supply of blood and oxygen. Coronary artery spasm is a heterogeneous phenomenon that can occur in patients with non-obstructive coronary arteries and obstructive coronary artery disease, with transient spasm causing chest pain and persistent spasm potentially leading to acute myocardial infarction (MI). VSA was originally described as Prinzmetal angina or variant angina, classically presenting at

Human cytomegalovirus infection impairs neural differentiation via repressing sterol regulatory element binding protein 2-mediated cholesterol biosynthesis.

Congenital human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is a major cause of abnormalities and disorders in the central nervous system (CNS) and/or the peripheral nervous system (PNS). However, the complete pathogenesis of neural differentiation disorders caused by HCMV infection remains to be fully elucidated. Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs) are mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with a high proliferation and neurogenic differentiation capacity. Since SHEDs originate from the neural crest of the early embryonic ectoderm, SHEDs were hypothesized to serve as a promising cell line f
