Perioperative Anemia, Transfusion Practices, and Patient Blood Management: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global blood supply systems and accelerated the adoption of patient blood management (PBM) strategies aimed at optimizing transfusion practices in surgical care. Perioperative anemia is a key contributor to adverse outcomes and is frequently treated with allogeneic blood transfusion (ABT), which carries infectious and immunologic risks. Iron deficiency remains the most common and potentially correctable cause of perioperative anemia. This narrative review examines various approaches to perioperative anemia, strategies to minimize reliance on ABT

Racial and ethnic disparities in access to non-COVID-19 healthcare during the pandemic in the United States.

Access to healthcare-defined as the ability to obtain timely and necessary medical services - is critical during public health emergencies. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic (2020-2021) substantially disrupted routine healthcare delivery in the United States, particularly affecting racial and ethnic minority groups who already face barriers to care. While previous studies have examined disparities in COVID-related outcomes, fewer have assessed racial differences in access to care for non-COVID-19 conditions over an extended pandemic period. This study investigated whether race a

Lessons learned from adapting the nursing practicum during the Covid-19 pandemic: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: At the end of internships, students do not feel fully qualified to work as nurses due to a lack of confidence. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, students worked as healthcare aide providing basic health assistance under the supervision of a nurse. This study aimed to explore the learning experiences of fourth-year nursing students who worked under healthcare aide contracts during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how these experiences enabled an effective transition to professional nursing roles. Increased respiratory pathogen positivity and diversity in hospitalized children following the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections are a major cause of pediatric hospitalization. Post-COVID-19 pandemic, atypical surges and disrupted respiratory pathogen circulation underscore the need for continuous surveillance. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed respiratory pathogen detection among hospitalized children aged 28 days to 18 years at the largest quaternary hospital in Malaysia from January 2018 to May 2023. The study period was classified into pre-pandemic (2018-2019), pandemic (2020-2021), and post-pandemic (2022-2023) phases. Respiratory pathogens were identified using the Film

Predictors of Critical Illness During Different COVID-19 Pandemic Periods Compared With Seasonal Influenza.

OBJECTIVES: Since the onset of the COVID-19-pandemic, emerging virus variants, increasing population immunity, and evolving treatment strategies have substantially altered disease severity. This study aimed to identify predictors of critical illness due to COVID-19 over time and compare them with those of seasonal influenza in Sweden. DESIGN, SETTING, PATIENTS, AND MEASUREMENTS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based cohort study using nationwide registry data. All individuals hospitalized for COVID-19 between 2020 and 2022 were categorized into five groups, based on pandemic waves an

Unveiling the Impact: A Scoping Review of the COVID-19 Pandemic's Effects on Low-Income Populations in Canada.

OBJECTIVES: This scoping review examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on low-income populations in Canada. METHODS: We conducted the scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines for reporting. The review included studies focusing on generally healthy, low-income populations residing in Canada. The definition of low income varied among the included articles. RESULTS: A total of 7,054 citations were screened, resulting in six peer-reviewed studies selected for data extraction and analysis. The grey literature search produced

Not all areas are alike: willingness to comply with pandemic containment measures across residential contexts in China.

INTRODUCTION: Public compliance with containment measures is important for effective pandemic governance, but willingness to comply may vary across residential contexts. This study examined compliance willingness with COVID-19 containment measures across rural, town, and urban areas in China and the factors associated with it within each setting. METHODS: Using cross-sectional survey data from 985 respondents across three northern provinces of China, we compared compliance willingness across residential contexts using nonparametric tests. We also estimated hierarchical block-entry OLS regress

Maximal Cytoreductive Effort in the Time of Pandemic: Outcomes for Patients with Advanced Ovarian Cancer and Lessons for the Future.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, raising concerns regarding delays in diagnosis, alterations in treatment pathways, and oncological outcomes for women with advanced ovarian cancer (AOC). This study evaluated the impact of the pandemic on the management and survival of patients with AOC treated at a high-volume ESGO-accredited tertiary gynaecological oncology centre. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a prospectively maintained database of consecutive women diagnosed with FIGO stage III-IV epithelial ovarian, fallopia

Myopic Progression of Children Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the progression of myopia in children before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Online databases were searched for original studies reporting changes in the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) of children, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: Twelve eligible studies were identified after database search and screening. In all eligible studies, the annual changes in SER and AL were larger during the COVID-19 pandemic than during the pre-pandemic period. The pooled differences in SER and AL before and dur

From amenorrhea to pregnancy: spontaneous recovery of the female athlete triad during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Female Athlete Triad (Triad) and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) are conditions associated with low energy availability (EA) that can lead to menstrual dysfunction, impaired bone health, and metabolic disturbances. This case report describes the remission of Triad in a professional triathlete during the COVID-19 pandemic. A 24-year-old female triathlete was evaluated in 2018. She reported bulimia nervosa from 12-15 years old and hypothalamic amenorrhea since she was 21 years old. Her training volume was approximately 20 hours per week (swimming, cycling, and running), and the a

Respiratory Virus Immunological Dynamics in the Post-Pandemic Era of Southeastern China: A Retrospective Serological Investigation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly reshaped the epidemiological landscape of infectious diseases, yet systematic investigations into post-pandemic respiratory virus dynamics in China remain absent. We conducted a seroepidemiological survey during the inaugural year following China's pandemic policy adjustments, analyzing 1104 specimens from blood donors for pathogen-specific IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and human parainfluenza viruses (HPIV). This approach explored and described transmission dynamics, age-stratified immune responses

Pandemic preparedness: Potential of routine general practice data for infectious disease early signal detection.

In this proof-of-concept study, we explored the potential of structured general practice data for early signal detection, to enhance pandemic preparedness. We used electronic health record data from the Family Medicine Network (FaMe-Net) in the Netherlands between 2014 and 2024. Descriptive evaluation with surveillance attributes was performed, and the Farrington flexible method was used to construct an alert threshold for respiratory, gastroenteritis, rash, infectious conjunctivitis, and fever syndromes. Alert signals were generated, indicating when the observed weekly count exceeded the thre
