The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep in children with Tourette syndrome in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The aim of this mixed-methods study was to gain an insight through qualitative and quantitative means into the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on children with and without Tourette syndrome (TS). METHODS: Parents/guardians of children and adolescents with TS (n = 95; mean age = 11.2 years, standard deviation = 2.68 years) and typically developing controls (n = 86; mean age = 10.7 years, standard deviation = 2.8 years) in the United Kingdom and Ireland completed an online questionnaire examining sleep, with open-ended questions pertaining to their p

Lessons learned in evaluating the Familias Fuertes program in three countries in Latin America.

This report describes 1) the evaluation of the Familias Fuertes primary prevention program in three countries (Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador) and 2) the effect of program participation on parenting practices. Familias Fuertes was implemented in Bolivia (10 groups, 96 parents), Colombia (12 groups, 173 parents), and Ecuador (five groups, 42 parents) to prevent the initiation and reduce the prevalence of health-compromising behaviors among adolescents by strengthening family relationships and enhancing parenting skills. The program consists of seven group sessions (for 6-12 families) designed f

Son preference and differential treatment in Morocco and Tunisia.

This report investigates the links between son preference and differential treatment of children by analyzing data from the Demographic and Health Surveys of Morocco and Tunisia, two countries that are thought to vary considerably regarding indicators of gender. The analyses find no significant differences in either country in the duration and intensity of breastfeeding and small differences in favor of boys in Tunisia regarding immunization and the treatment of diarrhea. These findings, which are, to some degree, unexpected, are discussed in light of other research relevant to son preference

Child and adolescent psychiatry: challenges, solutions, opportunities, and future directions.

It is estimated that, globally, the mean point prevalence of diagnosable mental disorders in children and adolescents is higher than 11%, and around half of cases of major mental disorders have their onset before the age of 18. Mental disorders with onset in childhood or adolescence have an enormous impact on the developing brain, body and personal identity, as well as on the short- and long-term social, educational and functional capacity of individuals. Child and adolescent psychiatry - as a discipline, profession, academic field, and network of clinical services - is still relatively young,

Breastfeeding, nutrition and type 1 diabetes: a case-control study in Izmir, Turkey.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between infant breastfeeding and type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) is unclear but it has been suggested that there may be a link between many environmental factors, including dietary antigens affecting diabetes epidemiology. The main objective of this study is to investigate nutritional risk factors, especially breastfeeding early in life that may be associated with the development of type 1 DM and to determine the relationship these factors have with the disease. METHODS: This research is a case-control study and was carried out in Ege University Children's Hospital

The impact of a sleep extension intervention on child health-related quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of a brief behavioral intervention aimed at optimizing sleep duration in children on their overall health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and within physical and psychosocial health domains. METHODS: Participants were 66 typically developing children (68.2% female), aged 8-11 years, identified as short sleepers (≤9.5 h/night), randomized to a sleep intervention (n = 33) or control (n = 33) group, and who reported on HRQoL. The intervention group was provided with behavioral strategies to increase their time in bed by approximately 1-1.5 h/night; those randomi

Addressing barriers to global multidisciplinary stakeholder inclusivity: Lessons from global orofacial cleft research priority setting.

BACKGROUND: Inclusivity in research priority setting is fundamental to capturing the opinion of all stakeholders in a research area. Globally, experienced healthcare workers often have deep insights that could impactfully shape future research, and a lack of their involvement in formal research and publications could mean that their voices are insufficiently represented. We aimed to modify the well-established Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative (CHNRI) methodology to address barriers to inclusivity, which are particularly relevant in healthcare that requires highly multidisciplinar

Health-related quality of life of children with neurofibromatosis type 1: Analysis of proxy-rated PedsQL and CHQ questionnaires.

This study aims to (1) investigate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) using the Pediatric Quality of Life inventory (PedsQL) and the Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ); and (2) compare the psychometric properties and content of these questionnaires in NF1 patients. PedsQL and CHQ proxy-reports were administered to parents/caregivers of 160 patients with NF1 aged 5-12 years. HRQoL scores were compared with Dutch population norms using independent t-tests. Psychometric properties (feasibility and reliability) were assessed by floor/ceiling effect

Health-related Quality of Life After Childhood Bacterial Meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of bacterial meningitis (BM) often suffer from impaired quality of life that stems from disabling sequelae. The authors aimed to estimate health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the influence of neurologic and audiologic sequelae among pediatric BM survivors. METHODS: Survivors of 2 BM treatment trials at Luanda Children's Hospital, Angola were evaluated for severity of disability via the modified Glasgow Outcome Scale, which considers neurologic and audiologic sequelae. Children who received vaccinations at the hospital during the time of the study (1-2, 2017) and su

[Religiosity and mental health of adolescents and young adults: a review].

Religiosity could play an important role in the mental balance of young people, a significant portion of whom are characterized by insecurity and uncertainty about the present and the future. This article is a review of the literature on the relationship between religiosity and the mental health of adolescents and young adults. Religiosity - which includes the term spirituality - in adolescents and young adults has been shown to act as a potential protective factor against psychopathology like depression, anxiety, stress and drug use but also as an enhancer of normal psychological characterist

Cardiovascular disease risk factor clustering in children and adolescents: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The early identification of predictors related to cardiovascular disease risk factor clustering (CVD-RFC) can help prevent chronic disease. We aimed to identify the risk factors for CVD-RFC in adolescents. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal cohort study design was used to obtain data included in these analyses from school-aged children who participated in the Korean Child-Adolescent Study 2008-2014. A total of 1309 children aged 6-15 years were enrolled. We compared the participants based on the presence or absence of CVD-RFC and examined the cumulative incidence of CVD-RFC. RESU
