Intraperitoneal administration of mRNA encoding interleukin-12 for immunotherapy in peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis is an advanced stage of cancer with very limited treatment options. Locoregional immunotherapy is being evaluated as a way to improve efficacy and limit toxicity. This study assessed the efficacy of a cationic polymer/lipid-based transfection compound in delivering mRNA molecules intraperitoneally. Our investigation of the transfer of luciferase mRNA in murine models of peritoneal carcinomatosis revealed preferential luciferase expression in the omentum upon the intraperitoneal administration of complexed mRNAs. Macrophages were identified as key cells that capture an

Five simultaneous peritoneal loose bodies: a case report and literature review.

We present the case of a patient with five peritoneal loose bodies (PLBs). The patient, admitted due to prostatic hyperplasia, had multiple movable masses in the abdomen detected during a routine physical examination. Ultrasound, CT, and MRI revealed several roundish masses in the abdominal and pelvic cavities, which were subsequently removed via laparotomy. PLBs are rare entities, often identified incidentally during surgery. Their formation is believed to result from necrosis and exfoliation of abdominal and pelvic tissues. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case with such a high n

Peritoneal dialysis in patients with severe obesity: A successful single center experience.

There is growing emphasis on increasing utilization of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD); however, use in patients with severe obesity has still been fraught for various reasons. We aim to assess the viability of PD in patients with severe obesity (BMI > 40 Kg/m2). We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients admitted at the home dialysis center of an academic center between 2014 and 2020 (n = 99). Patients with a BMI>40 kg/m2 at the time of PD initiation (n = 9) were selected. We extracted and examined the data for these nine patients till Marc

Insights Into Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes: An Approach Using Competing Risks Analysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) outcomes analysis presents challenges due to heterogeneous outcomes. Our study aims to evaluate mortality, transition to hemodialysis (HD), and kidney transplant (KT) rates and investigate potential baseline patient characteristics influencing these outcomes. We conducted an observational retrospective registry-based single-center cohort study involving 722 incident adult PD patients admitted between 1985 and 2022. Follow-up duration extended from PD initiation to the first occurrence of death (n = 143), transfer to HD (n = 313), or KT (n = 202). Utilizing competitive

The prognostic role of hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelets score in peritoneal dialysis.

BACKGROUND: The Hemoglobin, Albumin, Lymphocyte, and Platelet (HALP) index serves as a novel composite biomarker reflecting both systemic inflammation and nutritional status in clinical practice. METHODS: This observational cohort study enrolled 892 peritoneal dialysis patients categorized by HALP quartiles (Q1-Q4). Through comprehensive survival analyses including Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariable Cox regression, we systematically evaluated the prognostic value of HALP for mortality outcomes. Predictive performance was rigorously assessed using time-dependent receiver operating character

Increased antinuclear (anti-Sm) antibodies in infertile patients with peritoneal endometriosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the intensity of five antibodies against extractable nuclear antigens (ENA: RNP, ScL-70, SS-B, SS-A, and Sm) in infertile patients with endometriosis. METHODS: We investigated infertile women with minimal/mild endometriosis (n=43) and fertile women (n=46). RESULTS: The intensity of immunoreactions was also similar for anti-RNP and anti-SS-A antibodies. However, the intensity of immunoreactivity for anti-Sm antibodies was higher in the endometriosis group. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with minimal/mild endometriosis have higher levels of anti-Sm autoa

Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Breaks-Do Not Let It Break Your Heart!

PD catheter breaks are rare and can occur spontaneously or traumatically. Breaks may cause peritonitis due to wet contamination. We describe the management of three unique cases of catheter breaks without interruption of treatment. We salvaged two PD catheters with breaks that were proximal to the exit site with minimally invasive procedures. Even though one patient required removal of the catheter, a new catheter was exchanged over a guidewire and used immediately. PD therapy was continued without any complications. Out of the box thinking and repair of PD catheter breaks prevents removal and

Uncovering the True Diagnosis: A Case Report of Multilocular Peritoneal Inclusion Cyst.

Peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs) are rare, benign cystic tumors predominantly found in premenopausal females. They often present diagnostic challenges due to their asymptomatic nature and non-specific imaging features, requiring biopsy and immunohistochemistry for a definitive diagnosis. This report presents a case of a large, multilocular PIC initially misdiagnosed as a lymphangioma. A 29-year-old asymptomatic nulliparous female presented for follow-up after an abdominal ultrasound, conducted during a complicated cystitis workup, incidentally revealed a notable fluid collection adjacent to t

Yersiniosis complicated by tubulointerstitial nephropathy necessitating peritoneal dialysis in a young child.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a bacterium frequently responsible for gastroenteritis, mostly in children. Tubulointerstitial nephropathy is a rare cause of acute renal failure, the pathophysiological mechanisms of which are still poorly understood. We report here the case of a very young boy hospitalised for diarrhoea with fever and major inflammatory biological syndrome. Coproculture was positive for Y. enterocolitica, and abdominal ultrasound revealed signs of colitis. Cotrimoxazole was introduced, with clinical and biological improvement. On day 5, the patient deteriorated with fever, oedemato

Association of Oral Frailty with Physical Frailty and Malnutrition in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis.

Background: Oral frailty is a state between normal oral function and oral hypofunction. Oral frailty progresses to oral hypofunction and dysphagia, which leads to malnutrition, and then to physical frailty and sarcopenia. Oral frailty is reported to be associated with physical frailty and malnutrition in hemodialysis patients, but there have been no reports on peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Methods: This prospective cohort study investigated the associations of oral frailty with physical frailty, sarcopenia, and malnutrition in patients on PD. Patients were divided into an oral frailty gro

Trends in Colorectal Cancer Peritoneal Metastases Research: A Comprehensive Bibliometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) stands as the third most prevalent malignancy globally and is recognized as the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Notably, nearly 50% of individuals diagnosed with CRC ultimately develop metastatic disease, with the peritoneum emerging as the second most frequent site for metastatic spread. Recent advancements in therapeutic frameworks have enhanced both survival rates and quality of life metrics for patients afflicted with colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases (CRCPM). OBJECTIVE: This study endeavors to facilitate an in-depth review of th

Neutrophil infiltration in peritoneal metastasis affects prognosis in patients with ovarian cancer.

The impact on prognosis of neutrophil infiltration in the microenvironment of ovarian cancer remains to be elucidated. In this study, we analyzed the association between neutrophil infiltration in peritoneal metastasis and prognosis. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between neutrophil infiltration in peritoneal metastasis and the number of peripheral blood neutrophils, the degree of neutropenia, vascular endothelial area, and the number of stromal cells. Thirty-four specimens each of primary and metastatic advanced ovarian cancer with high-grade serous carcinoma histology were taken. S

[Intraperitoneal chemotherapy for gastric cancer with peritoneal metastasis: Experience from Singapore].

Systemic chemotherapy currently remains the standard treatment for gastric cancer with peritoneal metastasis (GCPM). However, the plasma-peritoneum barrier significantly limits drug penetration into the peritoneal cavity, resulting in the poor prognosis for GCPM patients. In Singapore, intraperitoneal chemotherapy has been demonstrated as a safe and effective approach for GCPM treatment following the implementation of various modalities including pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC), catheter-based intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy and conventional hyperthermic intraperiton

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy in the Management of Ovarian, Fallopian Tube and Peritoneal Carcinomas.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is a leading cause of gynecologic cancer-related deaths. Despite improvements, the 10-year survival rate has remained relatively unchanged in recent years. Disease recurrence occurs in nearly 80% of patients with advanced disease symptoms. Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a therapy that targets common sites of OC recurrence with heated chemotherapy during surgery, which promotes either direct cell death, heightened deoxyribonucleic acid damage, or increased tumor susceptibility to chemotherapeutics. Clinical trials utilizing HIPEC have shown promising re

Apoptosis of Mesothelial Cells Is Associated with the Pattern of Peritoneal Metastases in Ovarian Cancer.

Background/Objectives: Peritoneal carcinomatosis is the leading cause of death in advanced ovarian cancer (AOC). Mesothelial cells lining the peritoneum modulate tumor implantation, yet the role of their apoptosis in metastasis development remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between mesothelial cell apoptosis and metastatic spread in ovarian cancer (OC). Methods: The study included 26 patients with AOC, 11 with early-stage OC (EOC), and 13 healthy controls. Apoptotic activity in parietal peritoneal wall and omental mesothelial cells was assessed using the TUNEL technique.
